Just downloaded Spybot because an email I did not send was returned to my bway.net webmail. Spybot found lots of cookies plus one item identified elsewhere on the WWW as malware. One description calls it a "Trojan Downloader, Level Severe." and goes on to say "The malware may be cloaked and not visible to the user. These risks severely compromise the system by lowering security settings, installing backdoors, infecting system files, or spreading to other networked machines."

After using Spybot to eliminate threats, I ran a full system scan with AVG (virus only version) and found no infected files.
I run Windows 2000 Pro. MSFT security is always kept up to date.

My questions are:

1) is it enough to just remove CallingHomet,as I did, with Spybot or do I need to further investigate if it has impaired a program, opened a back door, etc.

2) could this be the cause of the mystery email ? (The IP address in the email appears to be part of a dialup pool with starcomms.net - out of Africa.)

Thanks for any advice...

Hello.

In order for someone to advise you, please see the stickied procedure for this forum: "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Copy/paste the HJT log and result of the on-line anti virus scan into a new topic, then I will close this one as helpers look for zero response.

Regards.
