View Full Version : 8 days of zlob

8 days ago all 4 of my computers got Zlob - have to set DNS server to 85.255.112.87 to get on to internet - then can't do much on line - wont load pages. Tried many suggestions I found on line nothing worked. Did a fresh install of XP - Zlob DNSChanger is still there. (If I had hair I'd be pulling it out about now!) Followed your pre-posting procedures. Below are HJT and Kaspersky logs. Thanks for any help. :red:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You said four computers, are these personal computers? If they are work computers, please see the information I posted for instructions for notifying your IT departement.

If I can assume these are personal computers, they were probably networked, which was the reason all got infected, let me introduce you to the hackers using the number you provided >>> 85.255.112.87
http://whois.domaintools.com/85.255.112.87

Ukraine Kharkiv Inhoster Hosting Company

I have found they are using this number: 208.67.220.220
http://whois.domaintools.com/208.67.220.220

To keep us from spotting the first number which we have come to recognize and the slang word "Wareout infection" has become associated with these Ukrainians.

We use a tool called Fixwareout but I believe Smitfraudfix is targeting the problem and would like to look at it first. In your case, this computer should not be attached to the network and not being real sure, I would have to assume it can get reinfected if attached to an infected network. Though I have not had it happen, there is always a chance you will need help resetting the IP numbers from your ISP if you should loose connection during the cleanup.

Please start like this:

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post only the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks

Prevx is indicating this is malware, did you install it?
C:\WINDOWS\VistaDrive\VistaDrive.exe
See this: http://fileinfo.prevx.com/spyware/QQ6a4454596526-VIST28573069/VISTADRIVE.EXE.html
If you installed it and know it is safe, let me know, if not scan it with one of these free scanners to find out and post the results:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/

If that item is malware, I am very surprised Kaspersky is not identifying it.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{B8DE1375-D268-4D0C-98DD-A86D778109FA}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.

Restart the computer, post the information about that file and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is performing now.

Thanks

Hi -

Hooked the computer to the network to get internet access. Couldn't get any of the three sites to respond to check vista.exe. (There are a lot of other sites that do not respond with the problem that I am having even when I use the 87.255,etc dns, so I am not surprised.) I did not install the vista folder or anything in it. I did a clean install of XP yesterday.

Next I disconnedted computer from network.

Did HJT system scan and removed line 017 as instructed.

Ran ATF Cleaner as instructed.

Restarted the computer, ran a new HJT log (posted below).

Connected to network. Same problem as before. Neither IE nor Firefox connect to the net. (I checked and my tcp/ip is now set to Obtain DNS Auto.)

Thanks for the feedback, please check notepad under Format and uncheck word wrap. I can not scan the logs with them formatted.

If you did not install this: C:\WINDOWS\VistaDrive\VistaDrive.exe
Then delete it, you will need to delete the folder in red, the .exe is in the folder.

Connection issues, I see this: O23 - Service: Netgear Wireless Domain Login Service (NWDLS) - Unknown
owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\NWDLS.exe
Is this a wireless setup? You may need help from your ISP to get yourself back online? I use a Linksys router with a WireSpeed DSL Modem. When I loose my IP I have to turn off the router and modem, turn off the computer, then boot the router > modem > computer in that order. I will guess it is the same with wireless, but you might have to ask the ISP for help with settings?

Once you uncheck word wrap and remove VistaDrive.exe, post a new HJT log so I can scan it.

Thanks...Phil

I do have a wireless setup on the laptop, but I hardwired it to the net to try to log on. Both connections, wired and wireless need the DNS changed to the Ukrainian one to get to the net. Here's an interesting note though - My Netgear PC Card software says that I am connected to the Internet (that's as opposed to just being connected to the router). Obviously IE and Firefox don't believe the Netgear software.

Tried to delete vista folder as well as the vista.exe file. No can do"Access is denied. Make sure not write protected and not currently in use." Checked attributes of the file: not read only, not hidden. Folder was marked "read only" I changed that attribute, but I still can't delete file or folder.

Below is HJT log - sorry 'bout that word wrap.

We are getting out of my area, you really should get your ISP involved in this, you darn sure do not want that Ukrainian information in your computer.

Try booting to safe mode to delete that folder.

You can give this a try:
If You have connection problems or those 017's ~ 85.255.113.90 85.255.112.5, return >
Before doing this write down all the settings, Note that not all system/setups even have these settings, While some connection service's will require them.
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
Do that for every connection listed.

Thanks

Her's what's up in the last 20 hours.

I deleted the vists.exe file and folder while in safe mode.

I ran spybot in SM too. It found ZLOB. I told it to "fix" it.

I ran HJT and deleted line 017 relating to a specific DNS number.

Restarted in regular more, ran spybot again no Zlob. Ran HJT, no line 017.

Decided to connect the computer directly to the modem. Works great - just as good if not better than before.

Put the router back in place, computer wont talk to router without the Ukranian DNS. Reset the router to factory settings via reset button (btw, it's a Netgear Rangemax WPN824 v2). Went into the router via IE. Nothing out of the orninary; basically everything's set to automatic.

Tested the computer on line without the router - perfect.
Put the router back in place - nada without Ukranian numbers.

Is it possible to infect a router? Is it possible to infect it irrevokably? If so, what would the point be, my modem is still picking up a dynamic address, it hasn't been compromised. I only need my Ukranian friends to get from my computer to my router.

I remain confused ... very confused.

My next step is to try another router, but I don't have a spare laying around....

Thanks for the feedback, recently within the last couple of weeks, I saw an article about routers getting infected. Unfortunately I did not save the article and could not locate it searching this AM. I did locate some information and posted it for you.

I was also starting to think we we might be dealing with a hidden rootkit infection, and i'll post instuctions now just in case you want to take a look.

Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
http://www.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml

Save it to its own folder in the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created

The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).

Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.

Do not fix anything, most if not all files will be valid

I'll try it again tomorrow. I tried to install Blacklight from the link you gave, but it says the evaluation period has expired.

I started the online Blacklight scan from their website, but after 6 hours it was still running and reported that it had discovered over 600 viruses. I stopped the scan at that point and there was no report offered of what specifically had been found.

I emailed Netgear support and they sent back a lame response after labeling my problem as an ''intermittent connection problem.'' I have emailed them again with the symptoms (again).

Thanks again for your continued hep and support.

I apologize, F-Secure made BlackLight available free for a long time and it appears they changed policy. It is now incorporated into their free online scan:
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
If you want to run that, it would not hurt to have another opinion. If you run it, please post the scan results so I can see what it looks like. I will run it myself, but I am bogged down with folks wanting help this morning.

If you prefer to try another rootkit scan, and keep in mind I do not know you have a rootkit infection (no way to tell without scanning) here is another scan:
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/AVG-Anti-Rootkit-Beta-t140756.html

For your information:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=what+is+a+rootkit&btnG=Google+Search

Found these phone numbers and they will probably try to charge you for support so you will probably need to get irate!!
Glad I use Linksys Routers

Hope this helps...Phil

Netgear got back to me this morning with a suggestion - upgrade the router's firmware. The link is: http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d103185.asp

Since I can't get the router to log on to the internet, I had to disconnect the router, download the firmware to my desktop, then reconnect the router, browse for the new firmware and upload it to the router. I wasn't expecting much, but it worked. Good as new.

One interesting note: After updating the firmware I received an automated message from my router saying that my router's IP had been changed from the customary 192.168.1.1 to a new number to avoid a conflict with my ISP. Well, there's a message I've never seen before. Do you suppose it's relevant to this whole problem?

Anyway, thanks VERY MUCH for your help with this. I had not thought to email Netgear until you mentioned it and that turned out to be the key. Still, it was a strange problem particularly with the need to change DNS to the well-known Ukrainian number. I suspect there is some hijacking of routers going on and Netgear has new firmware to take care of it. I'll let you know how long the fix stays fixed.

Thanks for the information, it's up to you but you might want to make NetGear aware of the complete problem. If hackers have figured out how to change the IP number at the router, I would want that information were I them. In fact, if their software has been compromised, they should be letting folks know, not the other way around.

On a second issue, since all computers on the network were probably infected what have you done about checking the others?

Thanks...Phil
