Hi, lately I have been having malware problems. I think it started when Spybot picked up some worse than usual stuff (AVSystemCare, Virtumonde, Zenosearch). They kept coming back after I restarted my computer. Symptoms included AVSystemCare warning me about viruses, NOD32 showing alerts whenever I tried to open Firefox for the first time after restarting the computer, being taken to random webpages during internet browsing, and for some reason my Quick Launch shortcuts disappearing (also, at one point IE kept exiting whenever I right-clicked on a link and went to "open in new tab", but I'm not sure if that is related, or just an IE bug). After going to Add/Remove programs (for AVSystemCare), removing some cookies and temporary files, and scanning multiple times with Spybot and NOD32, some of it seems to have gone away. Nothing bad showed up the last time I ran Spybot. NOD32 now has a bunch of stuff under quarantine that I don't know what to do with (files related to Virtumonde, Agent.BCK, and SecToolbar). I ran the Windows Live OneCare safety scanner, but whatever it deleted kept coming back the next time I scanned with it. VundoFix found and apparently fixed "Win32/Vundo.K" and "Win32/Winfixer", but it cannot remove "C:\windows\system32\yayyxvu.dll". VirtumundoBeGone found nothing.

Besides that, I thought all the symptoms were gone. Last night I left the Kaspersky online scanner running and went to sleep. When I woke up it was done, but there was another random webpage open in IE, and NOD32 alerted me to several new threats.

I tried to take the next step of running Spybot in Safe Mode, but whenever I restart my computer in Safe Mode, it shuts down by itself before Spybot can finish!

I really have no idea how this stuff got onto my computer. I honestly don't do stupid stuff like look for cracks or pr0n or use p2p. I log out of my username whenever I'm not using my computer (if someone else did it I suppose they could have used the guest account?). Maybe I clicked a pop-up by accident or something. The only thing I can think of that I have been doing different lately is that recently I have begun to use IRC (with Firefox add-on ChatZilla). Could that have caused my problems somehow? Also, I did have an old version of java, which I have now removed and replaced with the latest version. Is there any way I can find out how my computer got infected?

Thanks a lot in advance!

I haven't run HijackThis yet because I can't run Spybot in safe mode. Here is the Kaspersky log though:

I wish this forum let me edit posts, so I could just add this to the old one, instead of making a whole new post.

I went ahead and ran HijackThis without running Spybot first. Here is the log:

I just read that helpers look for zero responses and I had posted my problem in this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=19330) in 2 parts , so I thought I would use this thread to call attention to it in case helpers mistakenly thought I was already being helped. Sorry to clutter up forum space with 2 threads ! I needed to add something later to that thread, but there aren't edit buttons in this forum, and the text from both posts together was too much for one post anyway. Feel free to lock this thread once I start getting help in the one I linked to above.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Sputnik
Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Just reply to this thread only and don't start a new topic so we can both be on the same page :)

This is important, do this before you post a HJT log
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe<-- Right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a man with a spyglass )and rename it to Sputnik.exe

Post a new HJT log with it renamed please

Hey! Thanks for your time and help! :)

I am wondering if it would be easier and less time-consuming to just do a system restore. When is it advisable to system restore, and when is it advisable to try and fix the malware?

Also, something weird happened the other day - I'm not sure if it's related to the malware, or if it's just a Firefox bug. I installed the latest update for one of my Firefox add-ons (Stumbleupon) and then when I opened Firefox, it opened with the default theme and I couldn't use any of my add-ons! When I went to Tools>Add-Ons, I could see them there, and the theme I usually use was supposed to be on, but it just looked like the default Firefox theme, the Stumbleupon toolbar was missing, and I couldn't actually use any of my add-ons. When I restarted my computer though, Firefox was fine again.

Here's the new log:

Good Morning Sputnik,

Everytime you start your computer System Restore creates Restore Points and all this garbage your infected with it backed up in there also , so do not do a Restore at this point.

The reason I had you rename HJT is because the thieves that have written the Vundo Trojan have written it to evade a HJT scan and by renaming it to something else, if your infected with Vundo it will now show up on your log, and it did

Lets do this.

Download VundoFix (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4 ) to your desktop

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Download CCleaner from here (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clean temp files from your computer.

Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

This is what I need.
1. Vundo Fix Report
2. Combofix Report
3. New HJT log please

Wouldn't it be ok to do a system restore to before I started having all these problems?

I had tried VundoFix before, and it was still unable to remove that dll (even after rebooting).

Here's the VundoFix report:

Sputnik,

Your coming along quite well, you keep pushing for a System Restore, I have been at this malware removal for around 5 years and wish that all we had to do is have a poster run System restore to fix there system, if it worked there would be no need for this forum or the dozens or so just like ours and then I could move on to other things. System Restore will not remove your infection. Vundo is a serious infection but it can be removed successfully, you just need to be patient.

Open Hijackthis to Scan Only, close all open windows including this one , place a checkmark in the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ac490e92] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\qonyaopb.dll",b

Download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe) and save it to your desktop

Open OTMoveIt.exe.
In the left pane where it says: "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved", copy and paste the files in the quote box including the full path

C:\windows\system32\yayyxvu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qonyaopb.dll

Then click the MoveIt button below.
In case you get a "Bad Image" error, just click OK at the promt. It will move the file anyway.
When done, it will create a log (********_******.log -- * stands for date and time) in next folder: C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles.
Copy and paste this log in your next reply.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Go to this site Jotti Upload (http://virusscan.jotti.org/) and under the browse feature, browse to this file

C:\WINDOWS\mickey32.dll

Then click on Submit and it will give you a report, post the report in your next reply.

I need to see the OtMoveIt log, the log from Jotti and a New HJT log please

Sorry! I didn't mean to argue or doubt you, I just didn't understand. Not a problem. System Restore should be run to create a new restore point when lets say you install a large software program, if it borks your computer you can uninstall that software and then restore your system to before you installed it, but with viruses and malware, the stuff hides all over and when your clean if you restore your just going to infect yourself again as all the bad files are backed up in there.

This is related to RealPlayer , if you no longer have it on your system then you can remove this with HJT

The rest of your log looks fine :bigthumb: How is your system behaving now??

I just thought I'd let you know that I ran Spybot just now and it found Virtumonde .

Spybot is finding leftover registry entries, run Spybot and remove all it finds, reboot your system, run it again and it should come up clean. let me know?

Then leave that entry that I pointed out alone.

Copy the files with the complete path inside the quote box by highlighting it and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\yayyxvu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrs.dll

Open up Vundofix

Right click inside the white box and click on Add More Files
Paste these in
Close Window
Click on Remove Vundo.
Close out the tool when done.
Paste the report into this thread.

Open Spybot and go to Help> About and make sure you have version 1.5.1, let me know, if you still have the older version I will link you to the upgrade.

Post the Vundofix log and a new HJT log and lets make sure nothing has returned.

I ran the Windows Live OneCare safety scanner again and it found 2 trojans: "Win32/Conhook.B" and "Win32/Vundo.k".

I am going to go do what you told me now...

This entry is taking me nowhere so you can remove it with HJT.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://127.0.0.1:4664/first_usage&s=...eF3KPZ-FfJg4Ac

The rest of your log looks fine :bigthumb: How are things running now??

Spybot, NOD32 and VundoFix find nothing, but Windows Live OneCare safety scanner still finds "Win32/Conhook.B"!

P.S. I've had some strange troubles today, such as my screensaver resetting to "none", an internet explorer shortcut appearing on my desktop, when I insert a CD or DVD the window that usually pops up asking me what to do ("Play using windows media player", "Open folder to view files using windows explorer", "Take no action" etc.) doesn't pop up, and my taskbar's clock switching the time to 24 hour mode and the date to yyyy-MM-dd format. Any idea what caused it? I think Spybot-SD Resident - which I only started using today - may have had something to do with it, but I'm not sure. Here's the log from it:

2007-10-28 08:49:21 Allowed (based on user decision) value "AutoRun" (new data: "") deleted in Command processor!
2007-10-28 08:49:30 Allowed (based on user decision) value "scrnsave.exe" (new data: "") deleted in Desktop settings!
2007-10-28 09:33:56 Allowed (based on user decision) value "scrnsave.exe" (new data: "C:\WINDOWS\MATRIX~1.SCR") added in Desktop settings!

I'm not sure what it all means! The first two popped up when I installed ComboFix, so I allowed it because I figured they must have something to do with that, but in retrospect I don't think so. The third one is when I set my screensaver back to what it usually is.

And now when I click on a link in my e-mail, my computer tries to open it in IE instead of Firefox (even though Firefox is still the default browser) and a window pops up asking me to "locate link browser" - unless Firefox is already open, in which case the site loads in there fine. :banghead:

I have half a mind just to save all my documents onto an external hard drive and wipe my computer completely clean, re-install everything and then transfer the docs back. Surely that would 100% fix all my problems?

When you ran Combofix, if you followed along with it as it started, you would have seen it say that your desktop and time will be reset, Not to do anything and it will also be reset back to normal after the scan, so I dont know what you did to prevent that.

I am not clear on what program you ran to produce this log

2007-10-28 08:49:21 Allowed (based on user decision) value "AutoRun" (new data: "") deleted in Command processor!
2007-10-28 08:49:30 Allowed (based on user decision) value "scrnsave.exe" (new data: "") deleted in Desktop settings!
2007-10-28 09:33:56 Allowed (based on user decision) value "scrnsave.exe" (new data: "C:\WINDOWS\MATRIX~1.SCR") added in Desktop settings!

At this point you can use System Restore to Restore your computer but only go back to before your ran the scan that removed the above.

If System Restore did not fix it then do the following

open Firefox and go to Tools> Options and on the Main page and make sure there is a checkmark in Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser, you can also click on Check Now and make it your default.

You have to understand that the people that write all these infections are really a bunch of dirtbags and there programing skills are very sloppy, they have only one mission and thats to steal anything they can from you and if it damages your computer in the process they could care less.

Lets run Super Antispyware and it should find that conhook and remove it, I dont know where it is as its not showing up on your HJT log. Post the report and we can take care of that issue, and then I will direct you to a windows forum that can help you restore things back the way they were.

Please download SuperAntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE)
Install the program

Run SuperAntiSpyware and click: Check for updates
Once the update is finished, on the main screen, click: Scan your computer
Check: Perform Complete Scan
Click Next to start the scan.

Superantispyware scans the computer, and when finished, lists all the infections found.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it, and press: Next
Then, click Finish

It is possible that the program asks to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
Click: Preferences
Click the Statistics/Logs tab
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log
It opens in your default text editor (such as Notepad)

Please provide the SuperAntiSpyware log in your reply, as well as a new HijackThis log.

Let me know how your doing, if you ran SAS post the log and a New HJT log.

I had someone come over to my house and they've fixed it. Thanks for all the help, Ken545!
Eventually I want to reinstall Windows though, just to be 100% sure everything's ok.

I had someone come over to my house and they've fixed it. Well, if your happy with the outcome. My self, I would post a new HJT log and lets make sure its gone, but this is totally up to you.
