something still amiss

got rid of virtumonde thanks to some previous posts and other resources. running zone alarm security suite and caught/cleaned a lot of stuff. spybot shows nothing amiss. yet i still get adware driven browser windows out of the blue. any help would be greatly appreciated. both log files put me 6518 characters over so i just posted the HJT log for now.

I am not seeing malware in this HJT log, but it can not see everything, especially since the log is out of date. A link to the correct version can be found in the instructions, along with instructions for running Kasperasky to look for stuff HJT can not show.

I am also not seeing an antivirus program running in realtime and going online anymore without one is cyber-suicide. I see McAfee's Spam Killer and a couple of links to DPF on demand scanners not nothing actively running. I am not sure if I can help but to try, I will need you to do this.

1) Install a antivirus program and run a complete system scan, remove anything it finds and post information about anything it can not remove. If you need a free one, let me know and I will provide it.

2) Read and follow the directions, post a new HJT log showing the active antivirus program,and running version 2.0.2 as required in the instruction.

3) I will need to see that Kaspersky scan result at some point, please do not post it until I request it.

4) I need more information about "adware driven browser windows" tell me where you are being directed and to what product. If you are receiving any error messages, post them "word for word".

i have zone alarm security suite installed but i was running an out of date version of HJT. looks like it is appearing in the log now. i ran a full system scan with zone alarm this am and everything reports as clean.

as for the browser window issue, if i am visiting a site intentionally (say this site for example) a new window will launch with an ad for an antivirus program. the new window is filled with content that is generally related to the site i am visiting (ie myspace will bring up a personal site). in every instance however, these new windows are NOT sites that I am requesting and since the content is related to my intended destination, it leads me to think that something is running that checks what i am viewing.

if that makes any sense.

I am still not seeing any active infection in the log, but this loks like a dead Vundo line:

So let's run Vundofix to see if the infection is hidden, the symptoms sound like it, the trojan directs towards Winfixer.
Follow the directions:

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

i did not know if i was to remove the dead Vundo line you referenced in the last reply.

I ran VundoFix and it found nothing. I had run it a few times yesterday and after it cleared everything the first time, it continued to show nothing (as now).

Which file(s) should I upload to UploadMalware?

Do I need to run another HJT scan?

OK, something is going on. The dead Vundo line is not hurting anything just now. You made sure you used Vundofix from the link I provided...correct? It's updated often, so if you used an old version, even a day or so, delete it and download it fresh. If you did download from my link, then let's try combofix, it targets this infection also:

after ComboFix rebooted my machine, IE shortcut is on desktop and Firefox is no longer my default. is that normal?Not sure, a lot of our tools use IE as the default, once you are clean just remove the shortcut and return Firefox to your default, but wait until you are clean.
As you can see, combofix did remove stuff, hackers are changing their junk all of the time. Can you tell yet if this cleaned up your issue?

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(leave the first one if you set it to about:blank on purpose)

so far so good. however, it was never a predictible issue. the new windows would not launch on every site and sometimes the first new window wouldnt not launch until after i had been online and visiting several sites. everything else has been done as instructed. here is the Kaspersky log file from yesterday.
