View Full Version : My antivirus won't update, load or scan, and no other program will install

Hi,

I've been struggling with this a few times but finally succumbed to some professional help!

All of a sudden my antivirus (Clamwin) would not update automatically any more. It also would not scan any folders when I tell it to. It loads up ok, then just closes down when I click scan.

I've tried to reinstall, and install avg, bitdefender etc, but they all get errors during the installation process and close.

The same happens for winamp, MS Office, and even a java update of the net, all close or crash when trying to install.

My firewall is still running ok (or at least I think it is) - Zonealarm.

I ran Kapersky online virus scanner and it found 1 virus and 3 suspicious objects - report pasted below. I'm not sure this is the answer, there may be more at fault?:red:

Windows update will not load anymore either, so I am running at risk without some patches being installed. They downloaded ok, but wouldn't install - any ideas?

Please help, or I will have to go for a format and reinstall of the whole system again.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I apologize for the wait and will do what I can to help. I believe helpers are looking and realize this is not being caused by malware, which is what we do here.
Since multiple progams are affected, likely something in Windows is causing the problem and I will probably not be able to help you with that. I will see what I can do before pointing you to others who should be able to help with your problem. Let's look at a few things first.

1) Before I address the adware I see, you are running MSConfig in Selective Startup mode so I have no way of know what might be turned off. Return MSConfig (System Configuration Utility) to normal mode and post a new HJT log. You may then return to Selective Startup to save your resources.

2) You said "but they all get errors during the installation process" and there are probably millions of possible error messages, post all error messages "word for word" just as Windows presents them to you. That is the Operating System talking to you.

3) In the event a corrupted or missing file is causing your problem, run System File Checker:
OK... try this. Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter. Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Good tutorial >>> http://dwightblackburn.com/winxp/

3) Kaspersky: Number of suspicious objects 3

I believe you may have word wrap turned on in Notepad, turn it off please,
Open Notepad > Click Format > uncheck "word wrap".

C:\Program Files\MSN\MSNCoreFiles\Install\MSN9Components\digopt.msi/data.CAB/F1348_LTDIS11n.dll.78528DC0_46DC_4697_8825_37C77910B1B3 Suspicious: Type_Win32 skipped
C:\Program Files\MSN\MSNCoreFiles\Install\MSN9Components\digopt.msi/data.CAB Suspicious: Type_Win32 skipped
C:\Program Files\MSN\MSNCoreFiles\Install\MSN9Components\digopt.msi Embedded: suspicious - 2 skipped

I use this myself and likely it is a false positive from Kaspersky, they are not sure and that is why they say "suspicious" and not infected. If you want to scan the files to be sure, here are three free online scans:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/

It looks like all three are the same: digopt.msi if it should come back as infected I would contact Microsoft for instructions.

Post the information I requested, a new HJT log and let me know if SFC helped.

Opps...may be the long MSN item causing the post to stretch?

Thanks

I'll try and post all the items you ask before end of today.

Often I never get an error message when I try to install antivirus programmes, S&D, etc, they just close without a trace.

I'll post what I get for which program anyhow.

Standby.

Thanks for the feedback, just do your best. I have a strong feeling it is a problem with the Windows installer and if SFC does not fix it, I will be of little help.
