Problem w/ Smitfraud-C & PUPs

[DMS3COL]

Received a trojan/spyware/PUP attack. McAfee & Spybot removed several items however the following are still reported:

Spybot reports SmitFraud-C
McAfee reports 3 files detected but only list GenericPUP.G, & PrcViewer. It will not allow me to list trojans or viruses.
MacAfee also alerts “Buffer Overflow Blocked" and list the culprit as C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/Services.exe

Following symptoms:
An almost constant mini hourglass next to pointer icon.
csrss.exe process always at 10% - 20%.
No longer have any network connection or web access.
McAfee Firewall set to open; privacy protection set off and locked so I can't change it.

OS: XP w/ SP2 all current updates
Spybot: 1.4 Updated 05-09-07
McAfee: latest upgrades and updates as of 10/24/2007

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have a Very Dangerous infection on this machine.
The infection is delivered by Troj/VB-DXP (http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/trojvbdxp.html)
It allows outsiders COMPLETE access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine, and complete access to any other data present...
IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to Disconnect from Internet, Re-Format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. In that instance, even after removal of the infection, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to ReFormat or Not should be based on:
The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect. IN THIS CASE we have a Backdoor Trojan, the worst kind.

If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.

Based on the information available I will do the reinstall.

When McAfee first flagged, I unplugged this computer from my network; however, I have 2 other machines connected. I have done scans on both with the latest McAfee & Spybot with nothing detected. Should I be worried about the data on those two? After I had tried to clean the first computer I reconnected it to the network; that was when I discovered that my NIC was not communicating: 0 packets sent/received and there was no traffic indicated with the router. So I don't know how much data could have been sent.

However, since this computer is used for personal finances I will do a reinstall. Thank you for your help.

There is no Malware as such, but here are a few comments :)

mmtask or mmtask.exe process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. mmtask.exe is a process belonging to MusicMatch Jukebox. MusicMatch Jukebox is an application used to organize and play multimedia files. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

Music Match and Adobe Acrobat again

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down to where it says "The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check for any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
