View Full Version : Smitfraud-C. is killing my machine!

2007-10-27, 23:30
I have been infected by Smitfraud-C. and can't seem to get rid of it. Spybot S&D indicates that it fixes the problem, but it returns each time I reboot. Following are the HJT log and the Kaspersky Online Scan log.

I have run both VundoFix (no files found) and ComboFix, which appears to work but I get messages at the top of some ie7 windows indicating: a virus infection is present, click here to download....

I also get the following message when I boot to Win XP and periodically while I am in session:

Cannot find file: ///C/Windows/Privacy_Danger/Index.HTML. Make sure the path or internet address is correct.

Furthemore, my desktop, which is normally blue (no wallpaper) is completely white.

Please help!

Now follow these instructions:

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post ONLY the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks

First, thanks for helping. This has been a very frustrating experience for me. I have been working with PCs "for ever" and this is the first major infection I have had to deal with. The log you requested follows:

Thanks for returning your information, I have learned that:

hosts file corrupted !

127.0.0.1 www.legal-at-spybot.info
In that report means the next report may have a hugh Hosts file in it. That being the case, you may edit out the Hosts file items to shorten the post, just let me know that you have done so.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt, a new HJT log and feedback about the computer performance.

Thanks

The logs you requested follow. Please note that I have edited the SmitfraudFix log to remove all entries in the hosts file section with the exception of the first entry, 127.0.0.1 localhosts.

The machine seems to be running fine, performance is equal to what it was prior to the infection.

Please let me know if you see anything in the following logs that needs addressing.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback.

The machine seems to be running fine, performance is equal to what it was prior to the infection. We'll see if we can not improve on that.

See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_05\ <<< your Java program is out of date and that is dangerous, download the newest version and then delete all old versions in Add Remove programs.

TeaTimer will block the changes, turn it off until you are finished:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6EB10F79-5E53-4F76-B146-409EFCDCB957} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: EmpirePoker - {77E68763-4284-41d6-B7E7-B6E1F053A9E7} - C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker\EmpirePoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: EmpirePoker - {77E68763-4284-41d6-B7E7-B6E1F053A9E7} - C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker\EmpirePoker.exe (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Make sure you completed the Kaspersky instructions I posted above, then run a new scan. I do not need to see the results as long as you have no questions.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

pskelly - I cannot thank you enough for your assistance with the SmitFraud-C. problem I experienced. I have taken all the steps you outlined in your last post and everything seems fine with my machine.

I do have one question with regard to the final Kasperky log that I have posted below. Why does Kaspersky identify the SmitFraudFix.exe as containing a virus? Other than this all is well.

Thank you for your time and energy. If it weren't for you GOOD GUYS the internet would not be of much use to anyone foolish enough to use it.

Why does Kaspersky identify the SmitFraudFix.exe as containing a virus? Thanks for the feedback and for the question I can't answer:sad: Keep in mind the disclaimer posted when you first download Smitfraudfix:
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs, etc. It has something to do with the $$$, the Antivirus companies don't cooperate well because they each want all of the business. Every trojan that we deal with is called something different by every company, they just won't standardize, and again I say it has to do with the competition.

You are right that all four items are Smitfraudfix, but the creator of the fix updates almost daily so it is worthless to retain the program, it must be downloaded fresh if ever needed. Once you remove Smitfraudfix from your computer, Kaspersky should be clean.

Thanks. SmitFraudFix has been deleted and Kaspersky is clean. You should close this thread and archive at your convenience.
