Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected and I would like to check for a second infection. Keep in mind this junk can download more so stay offline when not troubleshooting, and be aware this is not easy to remove. If you have either of these tools onboard, delete them and download them new from the link I provide.

1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

2) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

Post the C:\rapport.txt, vundofixt.txt and a new HJT log.

Thanks

I should have posted this information for you:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< Java is VERY outdated and probably the reason you are infected. You need to update to the newest version and then uninstall all old versions in Add Remove
Programs.

Thanks so much for the help. I ran the 3 things you asked, logs below. Vundo appears to have deleted everything it needed to. My IE startpage keeps getting hijacked to midgetlink.com, so I've been going into SpywareBlaster Tools and changing it back to google.com (nearly) everytime before I startup IE. Plus I found that the clock on this computer is way off (it says 4:07 am now, and it is 10:30 am), so I hope that doesn't confuse the issue too much. I'll update the clock now and see if it stays correct, unless you advise holding off on that. Also, Java update was downloaded, but I see I forgot to remove the old version.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, keep letting me know about symptoms but they may not stop until we kill all of the infections.

Please make sure the correct time is set, many issues can occur if it not on the correct time.

Smitfraudfix appears to be clean, remove that tool from your computer.

This: R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.midgetlink.com/t1.php
Appears to redirect to: http://www.yahoo.com/ Why not just set Yahoo.com as the Start Page?

I am concerned about this item:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinUpdater] "C:\Program Files\WinUpdater\update.exe" /background
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/winupdater.exe-6405.html
Unless you know positively that it is safe, scan that file and post the results:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {35297404-9C22-4A8E-BE6A-6DE58B7C3378} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhe.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [c0b69d66] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\oeabuedg.dll",b

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< delete the contents

C:\Documents and Settings\TravisDouglas\Local Settings\Temp\ <<< delete the contents

C:\WINDOWS\system32\oeabuedg.dll <<< delete that file

If that file gives you any trouble, use this tool and instructions.
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the information I requested, a new HJT log and some feedback about performation. We still need to clean System Restore (infected) before we look at a new Kaspersky scan, but I need some feedback first.

Thanks

mwkos

Thanks again. I got the clock updated, smitfraudfix removed, 2 items from removed with HTJ fix. midgetlink came back into start page, even after setting it to yahoo.com. I think it comes back upon reboot. I'm getting used to for checking it, though. :) I think the machine is starting to run better.

Panda on virustotal.com found winupdater\update.exe as adware, rest of log is down below.
Panda 9.0.0.4 2007.10.28 Adware/Startpage.CXO

Deletions of ...\local settings\temp took a few tries, and all but 3 Perflib_Perfdata_*.dat files were deleted.
I tried putting them in HJT's Delete on reboot, but they are still there. Oeabuedg.dll did complain on regular delete, but HJT Delete on reboot worked, it is gone.

Here are the results of scans for winupdate\update.exe,
and latest HJT log is below it.

I'm not liking the looks of that item at all, see the Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Winupdater&btnG=Google+Search

I can see no reason why a valid windows update program would be running from there.

Make sure hidden files and folders are still showing

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinUpdater] "C:\Program Files\WinUpdater\update.exe" /background

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\WinUpdater\update.exe <<< delete that file

Restart your computer and post a new Kaspersky scan.

Thanks

I thought this short task list would be easy, but it took longer than expected. On the last two reboots, the machine did a chkdsk, but then reported no problems. While running the Kaspersky scan, my Symantec popped up with several notes telling me vundo trojan was attacking, and that I needed to close all programs and reboot. After the 3rd such notice, it closed all programs, so I rebooted. I restarted the Kaspersky scan, results shown below. Somewhere along the way I noticed I lost my Google toolbar (maybe I checked too many items in HJT fix?), but it can be re-installed later on.

Let me show you how easy it is to get attacked by exploits:
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html

If symantec identified and stopped the exploit, that is what it is supposed to do, why you pay them.

I can't say about the Google toolbar, you can look in the HJT Backups like this:
Open HJT > Open Misc Tools > Click on "Backups" and restore the toolbar if you did remove it or you can just reinstall it from here:
http://toolbar.google.com/T4/index_pack.html
Careful installing it, they try to get you to install a lot of junk and eye candy, when all you need is the plain basic toolbar.

Let's see what Kaspersky found:
Number of infected objects 8

C:\Program Files\Admilli Service\AdmilliKeep.exe Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.WinAD.k skipped
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Admilli+Service&btnG=Google+Search
Adware, Look first in Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall it if there, then:

C:\Program Files\Admilli Service\ <<< delete that folder

The rest are all in System Restore, see this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Post a last HJT log for a final look and let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks again for your help. Browser hijacking seems to have ended. Still getting chkdsk on each of the last 3 reboots, but no errors found by chkdsk.

Thanks for returing your log and the feedback, the log looks clean.
Have a look here: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=chkdsk+runs+automatically&btnG=Google+Search
to see if you can find an answer.

Worries me a little, consider a free diagnostic here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/
If you register free you will be able to post a link to the scan results and I would be glad to look to see if I spot anything.

Thanks
