View Full Version : Help with Virtumonde removal and hard drive
My computer's hard drive is constintly thinking (makes hearable noises non-stop) at this rate the hard drive will not servive 6 months. The computer is 1 year oldm so there has to be something messing around in the background. Any help for this?
Also my computer has been infected with the Virtumonde virus and I have gone into safe mode and removed it several times with spybot, yet it always comes back when the computer is restarted. I have the 2 types of logs here:

Hold on to that Kaspersky scan results, I may ask for it or ask for a new scan depending on how things go.
In my experience, noises from the hard drive indicate a hard drive issue, if it is still under warranty, you may want to consider that. PCPitstop will run a free diagnostic for you here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/
Follow these instructions:

This is the scheduler which is buggy anyway and showing an old version.

You HJT log also shows this newer version (still out of date)
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\ <<< download the newest version and uninstall all old version in Add Remove Programs.
2) TeaTimer will block our tools, turn it off until we are done: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm
3) Because this junk will download more, I suggest you stay offline when not troubleshooting until I tell you that you are clean.
4) I want to check for the possibility of another infection first like this:

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

5) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.
Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com
Post the C:\rapport.txt , vundofix.txt and a new HJT log.

Thank you for responding. I have completed all the steps. VundoFix.exe was not able to find anything, I scanned several times. I have uploaded the 2 reg files that spybot flagged. With the names of Virtumonde.generic Browser helper object.reg, and Virtumonde.generic User settings.reg. I will paste the rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Post a new log and let me know about any malware problems.
Will defrag, error-checking or disk cleanup interfere with what we are doing? Not really, should make the computer run better but it won't remove anything for us that is junk. I would like to see the tech report if you could provide a link.

The names you posted are what a program (Spybot?) is calling the malware, those are not the files.
Generally a vundo file looks similiar to this: C:\Windows\System32\ddffvrg.exe <<< file in red
If Spybot is finding this, make sure your program is updated and immunized, then if it does not remove the stuff, post here for help:

You are not having any problems understanding that report are you. There is little doubt you need to do something about the space you have on the hard drive. You have minor issues to consider with the yellow flag, but the Disk Space problem is major and you need to do something about that.

There is one last problem that has still not left, the internet browsers (firefox, Internet explorer) do not completely close in the process list. They take time when shutting down the computer. But that is the only problem, software wise.
The hard drive space is fixed and oddly enough the virtumonde came up again with the lastest update but has not come back after I fixed it.
The computer seems back in good condition mostly, and you have been helpful in everything.

How did you fix the hard drive issue, understand the computer needs a certain amount of free drive space to function properly, download critical updates, etc.
Browser issues: Are you getting any messages from Windows at the time this occurs? Off the top of my head I can't think of anything about this, stange that it is occuring in both browsers though. See if you can provide any more information.

I freed up the space to 34% on the hard drive and defraged, which fixed the free space issue.
But I error-checked the computer on restart and it is no longer booting up properly. I am sorry for taking so long to respond, our laptop took some time to get working on the web properly.
I just wanted to tell you that I ordered a system recovery disk due to the virtual recovery drive happens to be corrupted. Which means that this topic can not move forward until the computer is accessible, the computer still has all its data but with OS corruption. If the problem still exists with browsers acting up I can reactivate or post a new topic.
Sorry again for the wait. I want to thank you for helping me out, you are great at what you do. At least I know there is no malware on the computer. I appreciated your time because of how important it is.
