Hi guys,

I apologize in advance for my long winded post...

Wonderful forum you have here, it's helped quite a bit, but i still cannot permanently delete this bug.

It started under my wife's login with internet explorer as popups, nonstop popups launching IE.

I ran AVG first on it. Then i did a disk defrag to help speed things up. Then i tried Adaware, then i tried spybot. (not running all at same time)

When i logged into Windows under my admin account things seemed ok, thought i fixed it.... but when i logged in as her... they just popped back up.

I ran the smitfraud.exe and it said it couldnt find a certain file. I followed the steps to login to safe mode and use the cmd line to remove a certain offending file. (can't remember name now) and it seems to have fixed that one...

So i ran spybot again after update yesterday and it showed up clean... but kaspersky shows a few viruses and a few infected files still. Pasting log below.

Then i logged in safe mode, ran spybot again, it came up with only one entry, an IE settings that malware could exploit, so i fixed that, tested again and it was clean. Logged back into my account now, which seeems fine, and ran the HJT program. Pasting log below also.

But I'm quite sure when i log back into her account it will pop up the viruses again, as kaspersky showed they are indeed still there. (not logging in until i hear back from you)

Also, this may be important... I had run housecall last year, and i notice now in this folder "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files" there is a file called "Housecall ActiveX 6.5" that says it's damaged and i cannot remove it, even in safe mode with cmd line and explorer off. (error says it's being used) No option to uninstall that all. What should i do about this?
It's properties also show 2 dependency files with damaged .dll files. I cant see the whole path in the window, but it's it looks like the Windows folder, with the name "HOUSECALL_ACTIVEX.DLL". (couldn't find it in a search either)

Sorry for the long post, just want to give as much info as possible. Also, it's an old Dell laptop, 600mz with only 256 MB ram. I use latest Firefox, but wife still used IE, but won't anymore.

Thanks in advance for your help folks!
Dan

Hello danimal67
Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

This may fix your housecall issue.
Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O16 - DPF: {6E5A37BF-FD42-463A-877C-4EB7002E68AE} (Housecall ActiveX 6.5) - http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ho...vex/hcImpl.cab

The rest of your log looks fine but you do have markers in the Kaspersky log for Vundo, so lets do this.

C:\Documents and Settings\Danimal\Desktop\Downloads\HijackThis.exe <-- Right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a man with a spyglass ) and rename it to danimal67.exe

Post a new HJT log with it renamed please

Wow...

Thanks for getting back to me so soon Mr. Ken545!

That was a nifty trick there getting rid of the housecall item! It was really buggin' me that it refused to be deleted. Thanks!
:D:

Here is the new log with the name of the hijack application changed to danimal67.exe as you requested.

Oh, I still haven't logged in to the wifes account, but i did create a new limited user so she could log on to firefox to pay a bill. I ran spybot on that new account and it came up clean.

Cheers!
Dan

Oh, is it ok to leave spybot on while doing the HJT scan?

New renamed HJT log below...

Hello,

We only need to disable the TeaTimer in Spybot during the fixes or it may prevent the fixes from working.

The reason I had you rename HJT is because the thieves that have written the Vundo Trojan have written it to evade a HJT scan ( there on to us ) and by renaming it to anything else, if Vundo is present on your system it will then show up on your HJT log, and it did not :bigthumb:

I am not looking at anything bad on your log, let me know if you have any other issues that you may feel are malware related and we can dig deeper.

Thanks Ken,

I do have a few weird things still though....

I thought this one was kinda suspicious:

"O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)"

Any idea what it is? Should i delete it?

I've noticed for some reason now, when i launch spybot, it is taking a very long time to load up... like almost 2 minutes! It was fine just a few days ago... should i uninstall and reinstall again?

Also... when i startup under my user name, the SD Resident icon shows up in the system tray. But when I login under my wifes account, it does not. I gave her admin status and it still doesnt show up.
I even tried to reinstall it running her account, doesnt show up.

Any idea why that happens?
How can i get it to boot up when she logs in? I created her account after i initially installed spybot under my admin account... should that affect it?

And one more oddity. Probably not virus related, but perhaps you can point me in the right direction...

For some reason, i cannot view DVD's anymore.
My drive works, i installed software from it and can read audio cd's. But the program "WinDVD" just freezes and the DVD drive stops spinning when i load a dvd.
I uninstalled the program a few times and tried reinstalling as admin, still freezes.

Then i uninstalled it and tried to install the free "AVS DVD" player. It installed fine, but the same thing happens with that one too... just freezes when i load a dvd. WinDVD used to work fine.

I did notice on the uninstall, it said it could not remove 2 files, something like "ivivideo.dll' and iviaudio.something. .... but again, when i search the drive i cannot locate these files, nor do i see anything like it in the HJT log like you found with that housecall.dll file.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Dan

Dan,

It looks like you have Two anti virus programs running, both norton and AVG You should never have two, with AV programs this is a case where more is not better, they will use tons of system resources and can make your system sluggish.

http://www.castlecops.com/tk1662-iesdsg_dll.html
This is related to Spyware Doctor and I dont see it on your log so you can remove this safely
02 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

If you did not set this yourself you can remove this also
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

As far as you having problems with Spybot Search and Destroy, what I would do is uninstall it, reboot and reinstall it and see if it runs normally, if not you can post directly in our Spybot forum and the experts in there can get you up and running properly.

Here are some free programs to install, these are must haves to help keep you secure

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Win Patrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html) This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give
you the option to deny the change.

IE-Spyad (http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=6640)
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
(cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 2.0 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and
painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp) Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I
wouldn't access the internet without it.

Glad we could help

Dan

Symantec has a removal tool to get all the leftovers, after you uninstall Norton, you can then run this tool.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

At that point you can post a new HJT log and we can see if you got it all.
