Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I apologize for the wait, if you still need help follow these directions. You are infected, keep your computer offline except when troubleshooting and expect this to be some work and take some time.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post the C:\rapport.txt

Hello pskelly,

no worries about the wait. thanks in advance for the help. just to be sure...should i download the Smitfraudfix, and then run it in safe mode, or just run it in normal mode?

also, should i ensure that I am completely disconnected from the internet (disconnect my wireless connection) unless I am told to do something online?

Hi Patrick, I see you figured out Smnitfraudfix. Because many infections download more junk, I do suggest you stay offline until we kick them out. If this means pulling the plug, then do it.

You can see all of the infected junk Smitfraudfix found, follow these directions to clean that junk.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

I can see from the Kaspersky scan that we will have other junk to remove. I wish to see the new HJT log before starting on it but you can get this done:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< empty the content of the Spybot S&D "Recovery" Folder.
This may do it also: Open Spybot and click the white case with the red cross. Delete the contents.

Thanks

Hi Patrick, thanks for the feedback, please post the HJT logs in normal mode unless I request otherwise.
Include some feedback about performance with the correct log.

Hi Phil,

The performance is somewhat better. I do not seem to be getting the constant barrage of "adware remover" pop-ups that I had been getting. AdwareRemover2007 is still on the machine though and the desktop is covered with a fake, blank white cover that can be dragged away from the left (better than the red, bio hazard one that used to be there). Here's the HJT log (sorry about the last one being from safe-mode):

Good morning Patrick, sorry this junk is so hard to remove, seems no two infections are alike anymore. When we finish, voice your complaints here:
http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/

I see the junk, could you send your uninstall list, I want to see if they are installing it there:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Desktop problems sound like Smitfraud, please delete the version you are running: v2.248 then download and run v2.253, just the first part:
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Post that C:\rapport.txt and the uninstall list.

Please remember the junk can and will download more, so stay offline except when troubleshooting.

Thanks...Phil

Good morning, that was the problem, hackers create their junk faster than it can be added to the fix, follow these directions.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02 <<< out of date and dangerous!
Download the newest version and then delete this old version in Add Remove programs.

That's the only issue I can spot, look those over and make sure you know them all.

Post the C:\rapport.txt, a new HJT log and some feedback.

Thanks...Phil

Okay...I ran the smitfraudfix, uninstalled the old java, installed the new java and ran the HJT. Everything seems to be good so far. The desktop is free again and I am not receiving any pop-ups/reduced efficiency. When I first logged in under normal mode, the Adwareremover2007 application was running - "checking for malware." I stopped the process in the task manager (it was not in add/remove programs...and it would not allow me to delete it from the C:\Program Files\AdwareRemover1007 file, even though there was an uninstall icon there. Once I stopped it in the processes tab of task manager it disappeared (a pictureless icon was still on the desktop and an empty folder was on the hard drive. Here are the logs:

Thanks for the feedback Patrick, we have a more junk to remove.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Use Task Manager to end process on these if they are running:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\YourPrivacyGuard\mc.exe
C:\Program Files\AdwareRemover2007\AdwareRemover2007.exe

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {077F45D5-5CC9-4FC8-A7BB-9D79836A6066} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
Next is optional, see this: http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-180.html
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Salestart] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\YourPrivacyGuard\mc.exe" dm=http://yourprivacyguard.com; ad=http://yourprivacyguard.com
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AdwareRemover2007] C:\Program Files\AdwareRemover2007\AdwareRemover2007.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\YourPrivacyGuard\ <<< delete that folder

C:\Program Files\AdwareRemover2007\ <<< delete that folder

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log and some feedback.

If all goes well, I would like to look at a Kaspersky scan now. We started here: Number of infected objects: 83, let's be sure all is gone.
Please run the scan with these settings:
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks...Phil

Okay, so there's still junk on here. Performance still seems good, though. I got rid of the objects after a HJT scan, and then deleted the folders. Afterwards, I ran ATF Cleaner, restarted and ran the two scans (HJT and Kaspersky):

Just for your information, this item:
C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
Here is information: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/BACKWEB_137903.exe-1975.html
Google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=BackWeb-137903.exe&btnG=Google+Search
What HP does with the information the collect, who knows. I consider it a resource watster at the least, and you can turn it off in MSConfig. I'll let you make that call.
The rest of the HJT log looks fine to me:bigthumb:

The next Kaspersky will be clean if those directions are followed. Make sure you remove the tools we downloaded, they do not update and must be downloaded new if needed, the exception is AFT-Cleaner, a nice little tool you may keep it if you wish.
