My roomate has a puter that is HEAVILY infected with spyware.

I downloaded and ran Spybot on her machine. It completed the scan, then froze at the screen offering to remove the results.

We reran Spybot again, same results.

How do we fix this?

Hello.

As you just installed, I take it you downloaded from safer-networking.org (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html) or one of our mirrors, and have Spybot-S&D version 1.5. Which you updated to the latest definitions released October 31st.

If not sure, open Spybot Search & Destroy > Help > About and it will tell you the version and latest definitions.

A few questions:
Operating System?
Did you try running Spybot-S&D in safe-mode.
What other security programs are on the machine.

Best regards.

It's an old system, won't even run reliably for long with all the infections.

I ran it myself a few minutes ago.

The scan completes, but when you click "Fix Selected Problems", it gets up to 35% complete (round about) before it stops running (apparently). I'm letting it sit now, but at this point, if you were to click other buttons, an error message would arise saying that Spybot has ceased to respond, with no choice but to close the program.

Yes, the version is the latest download from your site yesterday.

Windows XP is the operating system.

It's currently running now before the system starts up, and apparently is still locking up.

There are no other security programs on the system, except the fake ones that cause problems and are identified as malware.

Hi there.

There are no other security programs on the system, except the fake ones that cause problems and are identified as malware.
Ouch.

Please follow the procedure in this link:
"BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
Skip the Spybot part, see if you can run the on-line anti virus scanner; the HJT log would be necessary for analysis.

Then start your own thread in the Malware Removal Forum (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22)

A helper will advise you when available. :)
