View Full Version : Vundo, Virtumonde infections
I have been wrestling with these since Oct. 29. It started with pop-ups and a system slowdown. I increased security settings in Explorer, checked for updates & scanned with Spybot, Spyblaster, Norton and Windows Defender. Spybot always finds Virtumonde and it reappears after fix. Norton and Defender have found Vondo and other trojans. They are either fixed or quarantined. Defender keeps sending files to Microsoft.

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Thank you so much for responding to my post. I've done all of the above and had a really hard time finding the vzbb.dll file. My husband and I searched the Downloaded program files and only saw six seemingly OK files in the "downloaded program files." We tried "search" to find the exact file but after a 2 second search the result was no file found. We went back to the "downloaded program file" and right clicked on each. They all had damaged properties. I was going to send the list to you for your opinion. I hit select all, copy, and paste to get the list into notepad. What actually showed up as the pasted text was the exact file we were looking for! Instead of a list of 3 Java files, 2 WU files, and a shockwave file came up in notepad as: "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\vzbb.dll". We deleted the notepad page, and with the "select all" still in effect, hit delete. Three files immediately disappeared. The others said they were protected or in use. We tried to delete the whole file from windows and got the same message. I right clicked it , went to properties and unchecked "read only" then tried to delete the files. They disappeared. They did not show up in recycle bin. The properties for the file folder in Windows still says "read only", with 6 folders and 1.90 MB. There is nothing listed in the folder. I restarted the computer and ran another HJT log for you. The "downloaded program files" folder in windows is still blank inside with the same properties. I'm running another Kaspersky as I send this to you.

Also, while waiting for a reply, I updated Java after reading a post in the sticky above. I also updated the real player after seeing an alert in today's posts. I had to uninstall/reinstall norton system works (on 11/2) because of an error in live update. Instead of installing from my disk, symantac had me download an uninstall program from them and after restart, had me download another from them (no charge) to install. I still had to have my product code but didn't need it as I was still registered with them. The scans kept coming up clean.
Since yesterday, spybot is also coming up clean. There is an item that came up today that has me concerned though. It's in green, labeled MS DirectInput (4 items). There is no description for that in the info section. It cannot be fixed with the other "green" stuff. Spybot asks if it can start the next time the computer starts. I clicked yes and restarted. Spybot ran and the list comes up. After I click fix, I get the same message.
Defender has Quarantined "Win32/Virtumonde.gen 6 times on 10/30, and 6 times on 10/31. Since then it has removed win32/Conhook.B once on 11/2 and once on 11/3.

Looks like the trojan/virus is lurking somewhere...The Kaspersky report says it is still infected. I ran the scan as I sent the last post.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, these hackers work hard to hide their junk and there is a good chance that .dll was causing a problem, at least your AV should have been reporting it. You can always boot to safe mode or:

When you run ATF-Cleaner, be sure to "Select All"...hackers like to hide junk in the Prefetch folder.
You are sure you restarted the computer after removing the item? If yes, then you can see it is still there. Use the information I provided above to attempt to delete it and then let's allow combofix to take a look.

Hi,
It drove us nuts last night not knowing where those 6 files went. I finally found them in Norton Cleanup, but I couldn't delete them from there either. Finally, I found a way to get the folder into NAV quarantine. Then I went for some much needed sleep. This morning I saw your post and tried again to delete the folder. I finally did it in safe mode. I just right clicked it, hit delete and POOF it was gone! I cleared out the recycle bin and restarted in normal mode. I cleared out Norton Cleanup and One Button Checkup. We checked the Windows file again and the folder is gone along with all the files. I started Explorer to post back to you and noticed that the Verizon Broadband Toolbar was gone. Then we made the connection on the file name...vzbb-Verizon Broadband. I went into add/delete files in control panel and it was still listed. I deleted the toolbar program from there, cleared recycle bin, used the ATF Cleaner (it said no files deleted), then restarted again.
I did another Kaspersky scan and it came up clean!!:D: I did a Defender full scan and it no longer finds the win32/Conhook.B, and it also came up clean. I renamed the HJT file in programs to scanner.exe just in case anything else is lurking in there.
It seems that the Verizon Toolbar was the major problem or was letting in the Trojans.
Meanwhile, I deleted the other files you suggested above.

If Windows Defender and Kaspersky are clean, then there should be nothing for combofix to find. It is a multi-purpose tool that goes after several infections, PurityScan/OIN, Vundo and others. I let you decide to run it or not.
You may rename HJT if you wish, and there are a couple of dead lines to remove.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Hi
I just wanted to let you know that I deleted the dead files from the HJT and turned off restore. I used windows disk cleanup and disk defrag. I then created a restore point. Then my kids needed the computer for school work. Everything is back to normal. I ran the ComboFix this morning to be sure everything is OK. It also came up clean. I have the log if you need to see it.
I had a feeling the problems with this computer had to be from the Verizon toolbar and probably because my Java was very outdated. I'm extemely vigilant about updating Microsoft and all spybot, spywareblaster, & norton definitions and most things update automatically. I never thought about Java or real player. My husband's computer is older, upgraded to XP Pro from ME, but didn't have any problems. All scans on that computer were clean. Both computers are linked through the broadband. I couldn't understand why mine was messed up and his wasn't, especially when my kids watch video clips on the other computer. The only differences were that the Java was updated to 6 and there wasn't a toolbar on the other computer.

Thanks for the feedback, I don't need to see the combofix report unless you have questions, remove it from your computer (does not update).
I use Verizon for DSL but don't know anything about that toolbar. I would be asking your Verizon tecnician about it considering you think it may have caused a problem.
I usually suggest removal of LogitechDesktopMessenger, here's the Google:

You can see it in the Kaspersky scan, it get's installed along with other needed Logitech software because the eula is not read. It is a resource water and You can remove it in Add Remove Programs if you like.
(be sure to remove just the DesktopMessenger)
