View Full Version : I have many viruses including, but not limited to, Smitfraud-C

dthor
2007-11-02, 21:28
I seem to have multiple viruses on my PC. I have seen signs of the following; Webhancer, PurityScan, Mirar, ZQuest, Virtumonde and SmitFraud-C.CoreService. I have run Spybot in Safe Mode and some of the problems were resolved, but many remain.

I have also pasted below the HiJackThis log. The Kastersky Online Scan Log is also availbable, but it was omitted due to posting length restrictions.

Is anyone able to assist me in clearing my PC of the aforementioned? Your time and knowledge will be greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome to Safer Networking Forums.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Since I am still in training, I have to let experts check the content of my fixes before I post them so please be patient.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions!

I have a PC that is infected with numerous viruses - based on the Kaspersky, AVG and SpyBot scans. Some problems were resolved but many remain (uncontrollable pop ups, redirects, locked out of task manager and control panel). I am new to this forum, but I have read the "BEFORE you POST" thread and I am prepared with logs (HJT is included below and Kaspersky is available).

Whatever I have blocks my ability to send emails or even worse yet respond within the thread (just hangs) so I have to physically drive ~10 miles to a clean PC to communicate within this forum. I believe that I can send private messages which…if anyone is willing…would save me from driving back and forth just to read/respond to the thread. I understand that this request in unorthodox in light of the intent of the forum, but my situation seems to have me in a bit of a precarious situation.

Any assistance you are able to offer will be greatly appreciated.

I see you have not upgraded to Windows XP SP2. During the time I am helping you, do not upgrade to SP2 until I tell you to do so.

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these vendors NOW:

1)Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)
2)avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1)

Download and install only one!

Step # 1 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step # 2: Download and Run ComboFix

Download this file from either of the two below listed places :

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Then double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Step # 3: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Step # 4 Post Logs

In your next post/reply, I'd like to see the following:

1. ComboFix Log (C:\Combofix.txt)
2. A fresh HijackThis Log
3. Uninstall List

If you can't fit all the logs into one post/reply, then use multiple posts/replies to get all the logs in.

HI LLINGO/dthor & km2357

I received a PM from LLINGO ( who is the same poster as dthor )

They requested help as they had not heard back from km2357

They also started a new thread, because they could not reply using the "submit reply" button

I have merged the new thread by LLINGO with this thread by dthor ... bearing in mind it is the same poster with the same problem ...

LLINGO/dthor please try to post back to this thread, each time you post ... if you are unable to post to the thread, then start a new thread with your reply & send me a PM with a link to the new thread, I will then merge it with this thread.

km2357 please feel free to PM me with any comments/questions you may have.

As you requested, I have attached the latest logs (combofix log and unnstall). I pasted the hijackthis log becasue I was unsure as to whether I could attach a .log file. Please let me know if you need anything else.

Just for you information, I can reply to the original thread only when I am on a clean pc. However, both physically getting to a clean PC and getting the logs to a clean PC are a bit of a challange. So, I really apprecaite your continued patience (and support) as I use the rather unconventional approach (using both PM and thread response). As soon as I am able to use stricly the thread...I certainly will.

I need you to delete the following folder from your network drive: \\extreme1\home\marci1\??sks. The folder will have the letters sks in its name. If you are unsure or have any questions, please ask them.

Step # 1: Run CFScript

Please delete the version of ComboFix you have on your computer, I need you to download the latest version of ComboFix by sUBs here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Then, please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScript.gif

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Step # 2 Post Logs

In your next post/reply, I'd like to see the following:

1. ComboFix Log (C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. Let me know if you have access to the Control Panel. Add/Remove Programs, etc

If you can't fit all the logs into one post/reply, then use multiple posts/replies to get all the logs in.

KM2357,

Attached are the newest logs. I DO now have access to the Control Panel with the ability to Add/Remove Programs. And while the machine may not be 100% clean, it is now much easier for me navigate and to get seemingly simple things done. Please let me know if you have any questions and/or further instruction.

Hi

The file & folder sections of the CFScript executed OK ... but for some reason the Registry section did not ... You have access to the Control Panel etc, again because Combofix now automatically removes those restrictions from the registry ... the CFScript didn't do it ... I have NO idea why the registry section didn't execute ... it looks fine to me.

There is still a lot of cleaning to do, but the source of the infection has gone ... keep a watch for km2357's next post.

Hi dthor.

From now on for any logs/reports I ask for you to post, I would like for you to post them in the thread and not as attachments. Thanks. :)

Print out these instructions or save them into a notepad on your desktop, because you will not have internet access while in Safe Mode.

Step # 1 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Remove the following old versions of Java:

The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (http://downloads.ewido.net/avgas-signatures-full-current.exe) (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now
change to inactive.
Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
Click on the Settings tab.

Step # 7: Deleting Files/Folders

Once in Safe Mode, I need you to use Windows Explorer to delete the files/folders I have marked in Red(if found):

Files:

C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
C:\Program Files\MSN\woqu376.dll
C:\WINNT\System32\iifgd.dll
C:\WINNT\System32\xlxrfcme.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\tuvtsrq.dll

Step # 8 Run AVG Anti-Spyware

Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
Let the program scan your computer.
When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
Make sure that [b]Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
Then click the Save Scan Report button.
Click the Save Report as button.
Save the report to your Desktop.
Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
Reboot your computer.
Now copy the report back to this topic.

Step # 9 Post Logs

In your next post/reply, I'd like to see the following:

1. AVG Anti-Spyware Report
2. A fresh HijackThis Log

If you can't fit all the logs into one post/reply, then use multiple posts/replies to get all the logs in.

My PC is networked with several others (as you may have noticed from the logs). So, when I have booted in Safe Mode in the past it was typically necessary for me to utilize "with Networking" (in order to log into the network). However, I expect that this may be defeating the purpose of booting in safe mode. Is that true? If so, any suggestions?

KM2357,

I executed all of the steps and included the logs below. The only thing that I was unable to do was delete the files in Step #7 as none of them were there except 'C:\Program Files\MSN\woqu376.dll' which I did delete.

Any questions, just me know and again, thank you.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 8 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:

Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:

Select My Computer

The program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt

Step # Post Logs

In your next post/reply, I'd like to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log (KAV.txt)
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. How is your computer running?/Any problems?

If you can't fit all the logs into one post/reply, then use multiple posts/replies to get all the logs in.

So, I updated Adobe, I ran the Kaspersky Online Scan and I created a new HijackThis Log. The PC seems to be running ok, but after running the aforementioned and checking out the logs...it seems as if the machine is still pretty ill.

One thing in particular...when I turn the PC on one of the first screens that I see is from AVG stating that a threat has been found...how do I want to proceed? I typically use task manger to end the process. However, I am not convinced that this is not part of one of the viruses and I am reenabling it by clicking on the screen (moving, closing, etc.). Is this possible or does that sound like AVG to you? I have never used AVG in the past. Also, everytime I reboot, AVG updates it files. Does this sound legit to you?

Well, I hope that this info is useful. WHen you are ready to advise...I am ready to act.

Many thanks,
dthor

HI

It's not as bad as it looks ...

Most of the infected files are in backups :-

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery (spybot's backup folder)
C:\qoobox\Quarantine (Combofix backup folder)
C:\System Volume Information\_restore (infected restore points, OK as long as you don't perform a system restore)

On your C: drive ...

1 infected dll file & 4 infected backed up HOSTS files ...

Please provide some information for km2357 ...

What are your H:\ & O:\ drives ?

Are they flash drives which were connected when you ran the scan, or are they hard-drives (from multiple partitions on your hard-drive)

RE: AVG ... km2357 will need to know the name of the file\process you are stopping & the location of the file.

Do NOT act upon anything I've said here, wait for km2357

Well, that's good news. Thank you for the feedback.

The other drives that you asked about are not flash drives, but rather additional network drives. Technically speaking, they are part of a larger portioned drive and they were connected during the scan.

Also, because I was attempting to follow KM2357's directions explicitly, I did not attempt to ‘fix’ any of the problems after Kaspersky Online Scan ran – just ran and saved the report (KAV.txt). Just fyi…

Hi Dthor.

when I turn the PC on one of the first screens that I see is from AVG stating that a threat has been found...

What is the name of the "threat" that AVG is finding? Is it the same threat everytime you turn on your computer?

I'm not familiar with AVG or how often it updates. Do you have it set for automatic updates? That may be the reason why it is updating itself everytime you reboot, I don't know for sure, but it doesn't sound malicious.

Kaspersky found some items in the C:\Qoobox folder, which is where ComboFix quarantines the files it finds. The majority of what was in the Kaspersky log is in your System Restore. We'll be taking care of both shortly.

Step # 1

Empty out the SpyBot S&D Recovery folder by doing the following:

1. Start SpyBot S&D
2. Click Recovery
3. Select all and click Purge the Selected Items
4. Close SpyBot S&D

Step # 2

I would like for you to use Windows Explorer to delete the following files/folders listed below in Red(if found)

File:

C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20071102-085629.backup
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20071102-085733.backup
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20071102-092347.backup
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20071103-104455.backup
C:\Program Files\MSN Gaming Zone\safejupe83122.dll
C:\WINNT\CSC\d6\80000195
H:\tmpms45.exe
O:\Extreme Fitness 3\Technology\PNC\DJTBKUP\My Documents\Personal\Humor\Zippedhumor.zip
O:\Extreme Fitness 3\Technology\PNC\DJTBKUP\Personal\Humor\Zippedhumor.zip

Empty your Recycle Bin.

KM2357,

I purged the SpBot Recovery Files and I deleted all of the files that you asked me to get rid of except the two zipped humor files - I know what they are. Did you see something suspicious about them? If so let me know and I can get rid of them (but I would prefer to retain the contents if possible). Would you like a new HijackThis log?

Also, after completing the aforementioned, AVG did not find a threat upon rebooting. Any other questions?

Hi dthor.

Regarding the Zippedhumor.zip file, Kaspersky flagged one of the files in the zip as BadJoke.Win32.Stupen.c. This is a joke program that mimics the actions of a virus and does not cause any harm to your computer. As long as you know what it is and are aware of what it does, you can keep it.

More info can be found below:

http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=BadJoke.Win32.Stupen.c&threatid=90902

You now appear to be clean and please take the time to read my All Clean Post.

Now is the time to update to Windows XP SP2. Go to Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com/) and download Service Pack 2. Once that has installed, reboot your computer and go back to Windows Update and download all Critical Updates. Repeat until there are no more Critical Updates found.

A Firewall is an essential part of computer security and you do not appear to have one running on your system. There are several firewalls that provide better protection than the Windows SP2 firewall.Do not attempt to run two software firewalls since like running two antivirus programs, they will possibly cause problems and conflict with each other.

There are a few firewalls available for free that appear to be good and easy to use:

Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
Jetico Personal Firewall (http://www.jetico.com/jpf2.htm)
Primedius Firewall Lite (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Primedius_Firewall_Lite_d4146.html)
R-Firewall (http://www.r-firewall.com/)
Soft perfect (http://www.softperfect.com/products/firewall/)
Sunbelt Kerio Firewall (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
Zonealarm Free (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp)

Please download and install only one!

Once the firewall is installed, check to see that the Windows Firewall is disabled. To do so follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, check to see if Off (not recommended) is checkmarked/ticked, if it is not, then checkmark/tick the box and click OK

To remove Combofix (and its Qoobox folder) do the following:

Go to Start > Run - type in ComboFix /u and click OK

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point: Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created..

The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK
Use IE-SPYAD Install IE SPYAD (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm). Add another level of protection to your Internet Explorer browser by blocking certain sites that are known to contain malware. IE SPYAD puts several thousand sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. If you happen on a site within its list, they can't hijack you or install anything. Program is free and is updated about once a month. Please follow readme instructions for install; it is a little different. Single user PC use IE Spyad1. Multi user XP PC use IE Spyad2.
Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a day. If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
You should scan your computer with Ad-Aware as well as Spybot S&D and your anti-virus program on a regular basis. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial48.html)
Install SpywareBlaster SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line Anti Malware (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=54#54)
Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html) If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then doubleclick it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok..
Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc/) and Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.com/) These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
Please read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place (http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=5931)
Please read Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and Dialers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial41.html)
Please read Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial82.html)
If you are using Internet Explorer, please consider using an alternate browser: Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) or
Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/).
If you decide to use either FireFox or Opera, it is very important that you keep them up to date and check frequently for updates of the browser of your choice.
Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If your computer was infected by a website, a program, IM, MSN, or p2p, check this site because it is Time To Fight Back (http://spyware-free.us/2006/01/time-to-fight-back.html). Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here's a good website to read about Malware prevention:

Good luck!

KM2357,

I took the few remaining steps that you recommended in your last thread and I am happy to report that my machine appears to be functioning normally, albeit I do have a few minor tweaks remaining.

However, I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you for all of your help! Without your assistance I would have been dead in the water. I do truly appreciate your patience and your persistence in seeing the problem through to resolution.

-dthor

Steam,
Thank you for your insight as well.
