Hi,

Stupidly an .exe was opened and a whole bunch of nasty's were released. Computer wouldnt start in safe mode to remove virus's, i did a windows repair and had to uninstall sp2 to do this. Safe mode now runs for 10secs then freezes but enough to run Spybot and Adaware. I have Avast antivirus, I also ran that Virtumondebegone file cause i had some symptoms. Now the computer is missing the Sp2 pack so alot of stuff doesnt run and it wont let me update it cause it thinks its still there. I have a legal student version of xp pro. I suspect there are still virus's, symptoms are; win antivirus pro 2007popups, system checker popups and running scripts popups, slow computer, Cpu and page file performance very high, programs dont work. I am installing sp1a as you instructed, I am thinking to reinstall windows from the start and start fresh, but I want to make sure all the virus's are gone from registry ect before that. Please see attached hijack this version 2.02.
I couldnt install the Kapsery one, it had an error saying I need administator rights and internet setting set to medium which i have.
Sorry this is so long, thanks :)

Hello Kristina72 and welcome to the Forums :)

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the infection has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

I can help you in the cleaning if you don't want to reformat but there is a possibility that we can't get you 100% clean.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post:bigthumb:

Oh man that sucks!

I thought as much. Ok well I will have to reinstall windows I can't have the risk of any bugs remaining. I have disconnected from internet and network as this computer is the main computer in the network!

Some questions;
Will reformating remove all bugs even in the registry values?
I have a partitioned drive with backup files in the non windows part but im pretty sure its clean.

The student Windows xp pro i have is a student distributed one so they havent given me the original disk which i originally installed it off but I now only have a copy, is this usable? Does it need the logo testing to download updates?
Therefore do i need to buy a new copy?

Thanks for your help! :)

Hi :)

Will reformating remove all bugs even in the registry values?Yes reformatting is going to wipe everything from the disk.

I have a partitioned drive with backup files in the non windows part but im pretty sure its clean. It is possible that this is clean but we can't say for sure. Depends of the format of the backups and type of the backupped files.

Hmm it is a bit hard to say...Are you able to validate your version of windows? -> Validate (http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/WhyValidate.aspx)
