Hi,
Recently, about 2 weeks ago, I decided to try out Limewire (I downloaded it from the Limewire site). I was looking for something to copy my DVDs with but the files I downloaded all showed up as viruses by Norton. I have since uninstalled Limewire but now every so often I get popup windows with "Ads provided by adaware". I also noticed that there was mails being sent from my PC, although it seems that Norton was stopping them being sent. I have Windows XP with service pack 2 and use Internet explorer.
I have read the 'before posting' guidelines and here is my HJT log:

hi Killeagh,

(I downloaded it from the Limewire site).

ok, lets say you got it from the official limewire website.
the p2p app isnt the cause of the problem. its what you can download from the networks. The p2p app is only the vector.

scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

O2 - BHO: browser optimizer by rightonadz - {971C3384-F75E-4562-95B3-CBE7417529BC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll

look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall:
DVD Software or DVD Cloner IV.
------------------------------------
download, install, update (follow wizard) and do a
complete scan with:
superantispyware:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

after the reboot post a new hjt log, let me know how its running.

read this at my site about p2p:

One of the files which was quarantined by SUPERAntispyware was:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\GZMROTATE.DLL
It indicated that it was part of Adware.AdRotator/Rightonz - when I reboot I got message saying that GZMROTATE.DLL could not be loaded - I presume it should have been deleted?

Is there anything else I can do, or just wait and see if the ads stop popping up?

Thanks for the info - very much appreciated!

hi Killeagh,

ok good.

when I reboot I got message saying that GZMROTATE.DLL could not be loaded

use hjt once more to fix this item:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hid_start] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll" DllVerify

do a scan with SAS again, after the scan reboot computer if SAS dosnt prompt you for a reboot.

Hi Shelf Life,
I carried out what you said above and when I reboot the message is no longer coming up. When I did a scan with SAS there were 2 items from Adware.AdRotator found - is this due to the .dll file I fixed with hjt (The two files were .dll files and were located in the C:system Volume Information folder)?

Thanks for all your time and help - it is very much appreciated - having a clean PC again is nice :D:

hi,

thanks for the info. those files found in system restore are from the original infection. some malware can get archived in the restore points. some scanners can delete them out of the restore points. just to be sure its always a good idea to make a new clean restore point. How?:

You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed.
Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.
To turn off Windows XP System Restore:
