Apparently, the Kaspersky log makes the post too long. I'll put it in a separate post following this thread. Thanks.

Please note that I interrupted the scan at the end, as it had completed the C: and D: drives and was scanning a commercial CD (with printer drivers) that I had left in the CD drive accidentally. There's nothing unusual on that CD, so I stopped it. Thanks for your help!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

If you are still waiting for help, let's chat a moment. What program is telling you about this item:
Trojan Killav? You are running Symantec and you understand it gives instructions for removing that trojan?
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2002-071813-0943-99&tabid=3
You might want to review that information.

This item: Trojan.Win32.Qhost.mg I see in your Kaspersky scan, here is information about that trojan:
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=Trojan.Win32.Qhost.mg&threatid=163248

Both are dangerous trojans and you may want to view this information:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

I'll proceed and I am not 100% sure what we will run into, but I do see evidence of a Smitfraud infection and we will remove that first.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post the C:\rapport.txt.

Thanks

Thanks, please follow these directions.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Can't add/remove the current Java program because my control panel has been disabled by the virus. I'm hoping we can fix the problem first, and then I'll update the Java, unless you have a better solution.

Nope, I rarely see a Java program that outdated, let's concentrate on the malware.

Things already look better. I see a control panel again! :)

One odd thing -- Smitfraud didn't ask me if I wanted to replace the infected file. Not sure if that's a problem. Anyway, here are the logs:

Except for that out of date Java program the HJT log looks good.

Looking at the Kaspersky scan:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine\ <<< delete the contects of that quarantine folder

C:\System Volume Information <<< two System Restore files are infected, we can clean that very last so we only have to do it once.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20071104-181241.backup Infected: Trojan.Win32.Qhost.mg skipped
These are the ones that have me puzzled and there are 11 in the scan which adds to the 14 found.

Notice it says these are backups. Have a look in the Hosts file to see if you can figure out what they are. If you see them, delete them.

To view the Hosts file:
Start -> Run -> Copy the following to the box and hit enter:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

A window opens, choose Notepad from the list and hit OK.

A notepad document opens, copy the contents to here <<< I don't need to see the Hosts file if you can see the backups and delete them.

Once that is done, follow these instructions to clean System Restore:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

Once that is done, run a new Kaspersky to make sure it is clean. I do not need to see a clean scan, just let me know of any malware issues.

Thanks

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20071104-181241.backup

I just went to that etc folder and I have no such backups. Navigate to that folder, you will see the HOSTS file, it will be about 1 KB. Look for those
11 items like this: hosts.20071104-181241.backup and delete them. It is probably in a folder.
Look at the 11 items in the Kaspersky scan, they all look the same except for this number: 181255.backup

Thanks

Finished that. There was actually a 12th file that showed the virus (it was just called "1") and I deleted that too.

I re-ran the Kaspersky, and I see no malware on my system.

You've been extremely helpful. Thank you very much!

Thanks for the feedback and you are certainly welcome, we did it as a team:bigthumb: If your computer is back to normal, here is some information you will benefit from.

Make sure you get Java up to date and remove old Java programs, see how easy it is to get infected anymore:
