I have been fighthing this for a week now. PC cillin originally reported it as vundo.pq virus. I ran vundo fix but it keeps coming back after connecting to the internet. Also, PC-cillin has been blocking SYSCARE.C and AdSpy.CE from installing on my computer. I also get a windows update shield in the taskbar that I believe is virus related. Internet Explorer is constantly being redirected to other sites. Here are my logs. Thanks for your help!

C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 12\Quarantine\ <<< please delete the contents of that quarantine folder

C:\VundoFix Backups\ <<< delete any Vundofix on your computer including that VundoFix Backups folder. The program does not update and I wish you down download it fresh from the link I provide.
The tricky thing about this infection is if you do not kill it all, it will morph and return.

Once you have done that, then start like this:

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

Thanks

This is a Vundo file: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1BDEF906-350A-44DB-8BB5-1231252A57CC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtt.dll
Are you positive you downloaded the newest Version of Vundofix as instructed? If you did, please upload that file so Atribune can add it, then let's give HJT a try:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Thanks for the reply,

I verified that I installed the Vundofix version from the link that you provided (I did). I will submit the file "awvtt.dll" for examination.

When I ran HiJackThis I found...

Different Registry (?) String:

For the manual file deletion, I could not delete "ykixpqpf.dll" (not present). I deleted the above "nowiusaw.dll" file (using the kill on startup tool). I hope I didn't screw anything up!

While searching for the files to delete, I did find a suspious file "vgamfaps.exe" that was created when I turned on my computer this evening. Out of curiosity, I tried to send to the recycling bin, but it was in use and could not be deleted. I also noticed another file created at boot up "ttvwa.bak2" that is the reverse of the Vundo file "awvtt" that you requested I submit. I also noticed the HiJackThis was unsucessful in removing the file (see log).

I tried to access the internet and was redirected to other sites as before.

Thanks for the help. Here is my HJT log.

Thanks for the feedback, these hackers keep changing the way they install this junk, seems no two infections are ever alike. Let me give you some information to look over.
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/search.aspx?q=winfixer+msn

Let's do this:
1) Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the
next window opens, copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

Enter these files, you have room for three:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtt.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtiehgbx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ygamfaps.exe

2) Keep all files and folders unhidden until we finish

3) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to DomainService and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

(some may be gone, removed by Vundofix)

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {22FEA411-83B4-4795-BC97-731B044F24E1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtt.dll
O2 - BHO: {8de283db-b3ea-1ca9-a534-8d665ca8cc8c} - {c8cc8ac5-66d8-435a-9ac1-ae3bbd382ed8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtiehgbx.dll
O23 - Service: DomainService - - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ygamfaps.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ygamfaps.exe <<< delete that file if there

Run Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/

Post a new HJT log and some feedback.

Thanks

Hi PSKelly,

Thanks for the news links. I hope they win their lawsuit. Vundofix removed the first two files, but could not remove ygamfaps.exe. I used HJT removal tool to do the job. While working, PC-cillin popped up a warning about a dll file that it quarantined. I also used it to wipe out some other executables that were in my temporary directory that had recently been installed. I believe these files were causing my other PC-cillin virus alerts that I have had over the last few days. Computer is running much better now. No internet pop ups or hijacks as of yet. However, boot time appears slower. Spybot still reports six Virtumonde entries (up from three). I did not attempt to fix these yet. Do I need to post a Spybot log or is there another course of action to remove these?

Thanks for all your help:bigthumb: You guys are great!

Here is my HJT log...

While it was running, PC-cillin blocked a couple of attacks...Looks like they are coming from the system restore directory. Here is the PC-cillin event log.

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Saturday, November 10, 2007 5:02:36 PM
Number of infected objects: 5

These four are still active, navigate to them and delete them. Remember that will send them to the Recycle Bin, so if you don't empty it, the next Kaspersky will show them in C:\RECYCLER\

C:\WINDOWS\system32\f22\ <<< Delete that folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iqpnwxii.dll <<< delete that file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kqrgqxdk.dll <<< delete that file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\.exe <<< delete that file
(never seen a .exe but that should be what it looks like)

Kaspersky shows only one infected System Restore file:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{129201FA-B0AC-49B3-96B2-DEB8B91E727B}\RP10\A0001509.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.BHO.rf skipped

Don't know what PC-cillin is seeing? One thing for sure, PC-cillin can not quarantine them like it shows, no program can do anything in System Restore (protected) this is how to clean it:

All files deleted. Spybot reports me clean! The ".exe" file is strange. Under file properties is has reports to be a Microsoft file with a creation date of 2003 (long before the computer was made). It says the original name of the file was "loader.bin" and product name "rundll32". Could Kaspersky misidentified it as a virus? I saved it to a flash drive in case I need it in the future.

One last thing...before posting in your forums, I attempted removal of the virus (foolish, I know) and deleteted a dll file marked as a virus and it messed up windows (it's also entirely possible that I just screwed upand deleted some critical windows component!). The result was a boot up loop where I was asked to select user (me only or me and administrator in safe mode) and click the icon (before that, I was the only user and never had that select user screen). When either was clicked, I saw loading settings followed by saving settings and a reboot. I booted from CD (restore points vanished) and did a repair installation of windows. Now I have the Windows Installer 3.1 update that won't install. Without that I can't get other windows updates. I have found lots of different solutions online and a lot of people that say they don't work. Before I dig into this, I thought I would see if you had any input.

Again, my most sincere thanks for all of your help. It is truly a great service that you all provide. I will dust off my paypal password for your great service! Thank you Phil.

Could Kaspersky misidentified it as a virus? I saved it to a flash drive in case I need it in the future. Though it would be very rare, it could happen. If you look at the item:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\.exe Infected: Trojan-Dropper.Win32.VB.tg skipped
They seem to be sure it is bad. Here are scans you can use to check it if you wish:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/

I can't get any information from Google on the litem by searching .exe

As far as your Windows Installer issues, here are some thoughts.

First, the Google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Windows+Installer+3.1+update+won%27t+install&btnG=Search

In case it is a missing or corrupt Windows file, try System File Checker.
OK... try this. Click Start > Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.
http://dwightblackburn.com/winxp/ <<< good tutorial

If you know what the missing .dll is, they are usually fairly easy to find online:
