I am trying to bring my stepdaughter's computer back to useful life. Her kids and husband had so many pop-ups the machine was not useable. I have installed Zone Alarm, AVG Anti-Virus, AVG Anti-Spyware, and all the Windows updates (using Windiz, so the system reports it's still running XP Media Edition SP1). I've also run Ad-Aware & Spybot. Spybot 1.5 finally got rid of the last of my obvious problems (Drive Cleaner 2006 & Virtumonde), but AVG still finda Trojan Horse Generic8.LKV on normal start up, and Spybot reports some attempted registry changes, so I think I still have a problem. The Kaspersky log is very long. Is there a part of it that tells you what you need?

Hi rsteeves
We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.
1. Download combofix from one of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link2 (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

nothing is a problem, it's an opportunity....
IE does not see the internet. I had this problem, then it mysteriously went away, now it's back. And Kaspersky needs IE. My theory is that something I fixed made IE not work, but the infection wasn't permanently gone and when it revived itself it made IE work again. Could anything you've fixed grab IE that way?

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
You can remove all tools we used.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. I installed XP SP2. On restart I logged on as a non-administrator user. I got an error box titled RUNDLL with the message:
error loading c:/windows/system32/jkhhedb.dll
The specified module could not be found
What worries me is that something that we've deleted.

As a non-administrator I don't get a log, but I compared the HJT report with the log I sent you. The only difference I see is that the item:
04 - HKCU\..\run: [Aim6] etc. has been replaced by this:
04 - HKCU\..\run: [ctfmon.exe] rundll32.exe c:\windows\system32\jkhhedb.dll,QuerySet
When I ran HJT it warned me that I don't have write access and it can't fix things automatically.

Start -> Run -> regedit -> ok. Then File -> Export. Give it a name and press Save.
After that, navigate here
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Find this -> ctfmon.exe and delete it.

Disabling via msconfig seems to have worked. It took me a minute to figure out that I had to make the account an administrator to do this, then change it back. Now I'll implement your preventive measures. And I'm going to make my step daughter and her kids sign a pledge to adhere to the safe internet use rules I'm giving them!
