I got some pretty nasty malware while researching why XP won't let me enter a Domain.

I have removed many infections using spybot, lavasoft adaware, reg cleaner, etc...but can't get rid of it all.

I have downloaded latest spybot version and definitions files and ran it to try to remove Virtumonde infection.

I have run the Kaspersky online virus scan and saved the results.

I have run spybot in safe mode then saved the results.

I tried to remove cbxvsqq.dll and pmnnn.dll using Killbox, Unlocker, MoveOnBoot...nothing works. I have run VundoFix and it found nothing.

The only thing allowing me type this now is SpyBot's Tea Timer!!

Please help...this is a work computer and I am screwed without it. I have been fighting this for 2 days now.

Hi BrianCMM

I see no antivirus installed so this is the first step:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

After that:

Rename HijackThis.exe to BrianCMM.exe and post back a fresh HijackThis log, please :)

Thanks.
I installed and ran AVG. It found and fixed some problems. It was able to get rid of cbxvsqq.dll! That was a big help.

But if still couldn't get rid of pmnnn.dll. I managed to get rid of it by scouring the registry while using TeaTimer to block new registry changes. So the pmnnn.dll is now also gone, but I have new problems.

Now when I boot up it hesitates at "Starting Windows" for ~2 minutes. Then when it loads it says I have a sound card error. Then it continues to load windows and I lose mt task bar and therefore my Start menu. It also says I need to register windows...which I already did? It wouldn't let my transfer my log files, so I cut and pasted them into new log files I made on a flashdrive. That's how I made the HiJack.log. I also have a lot of Browser Help Objects that don't look good in IE add-ons:
vuferdo.dll
cbxsvqq.dll
nivyg4444.dll
nivyg83122.dll
nivyg555077.dll
ryhizik.dll
I assume I should remove these.

I made 2 logs, 1 in Safe mode, 1 in normal mode.
Thank for so much for your help thus far.

Hi

"Now when I boot up it hesitates at "Starting Windows" for ~2 minutes. Then when it loads it says I have a sound card error. Then it continues to load windows and I lose mt task bar and therefore my Start menu. It also says I need to register windows...which I already did?"

Sounds really weird, let me know if that occurs on every boot.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

1. Download combofix from one of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link2 (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- combofix report

Yes it hesitates like this on every reboot now, even if I boot in Safe mode. And when I run SpyBot, it takes about 3 minutes before it pops up and begins running. And there is no hard drive activity during these boot up or SpyBot startup operations.

I am following your directions from your latest post and will reply when I am finished. It may take a while since everything is so messed up and I must use my laptop to post to here, therefore I have to try to get log files off of bad computer and onto laptop.

Hi

Ok, take your time :)

OK...man this is tough. My computer will not let me transfer any files to or from the c drive. Before I ran AVG I had a fully functioning computer, albeit with viruses, but I was able to download stuff. Anyway, I was able to create a shortcut on the c: drive to ComboFix.exe which I had on a flash drive. So I got it to work.

Hi

I think this can be easier than kaspersky. If you can run kaspersky from infected computer, do that instead:

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.

Please download MWav (http://www.spywareinfo.dk/download/mwav.exe):

Unzip it to its predetermined directory (C:\Kaspersky)
Locate kavupd.exe in the new folder and double-click to Update.
If your firewall gives any messages about this program accessing to internet, allow it.
If it says the signatures are more than 30 days old, keep trying, until you get the actual definition updates.
When you see Updates Downloaded Successfully, hit Enter to continue.
Restart onto Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and locate the Kaspersky folder.
Locate mwavscan.com and double-click on it to launch the MWAV Scanner. Now lets do the settings:
Leave the Default Settings checked.
Add a check to Drives
This will light up All Drives
Add a check to Scan all Files
Click Scan Clean to begin.
This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
Please be sure it has finished before proceeding.
Once the Scan has finished, all entries identified as Infected, will be displayed in the lower panel.
Highlight everything that is inside the lower panel and hit Ctrl+C at the same time to copy.
Open an empty notepad file and paste the results (Ctrl+V) to it. Save the notepad to your desktop, name it as you want (e.g; MWav Results).Reboot into normal Windows and post the results here along with a fresh HijackThis log.

I ran a Kaspersky scan before when I first read your forum. Since then I have run AVG and all above. I can't get online with infected computer anymore, not since I ran AVG??

I have included my latest Kaspersky scna, but I don't know if it's useful. I will continue to try to get my infected computer online.

Hi

Ok, I'll be waiting :)

OK..this is day 5 of this problem for me with no work computer!! FYI...it still takes about 2 minutes when it says "starting windows"...it just pauses with no hard drive activity. And I noticed I can no longer drag and drop and icons or files and I can't cut and paste either.

The HiJack this log I was able to get by doing a "SaveAs" and point it to a flash drive, but I couldn't cut and paste the Kaspersky results so I typed them in by hand.

Thanks again.

Here are the results I copied from the Kaspersky scan.

File C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\backups\backup-20071108-133126-397.dll tagged as not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.TTC.a. No Action Taken.
File C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\backups\backup-20071108-133126-957.dll tagged as not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.TTC.a. No Action Taken.
File C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\backups\backup-20071108-133126-920.dll tagged as not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.TTC.a. No Action Taken.
File C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot-Search & Destroy\Recovery\WebBuyingAssistant.zip infected by "Password-protected-EXE" virus. Action Taken: File Renamed.

I also copied all the ERRORS!!! that were found in the log file and pasted below.

Since I am having so many problems, like no cut & paste functionality, no drag and drop and now I can no longer install or remove programs, I am going to reinstall windows XP to try and repair some windows functionality. I will post my results when complete.

I have reinstalled windows and now have normal functionality back. I can drap/drop, cut\paste etc. and it no longer stalls for 2 minutes during "Starting windows" but I may still have some viruses/problems. I have run another HiJack and posted a log below.

Hi

Repair installation might have also helped but glad to hear that it works normally now.

Your log looks fine.

Any other issues left?

BrianCMM
2007-11-09, 17:58
Nope. No more problems. I think it's all fixed thanks to your help.

The only problem I have left is my original problem of not being able to update windows through my proxy here at work...but that's a different issue.

I really appreciate all your help. Thanks so much. You and this forum saved me and my computer. Now I guess I got a lot of work to catch up on.

Thanks again!!!!

Hi

"The only problem I have left is my original problem of not being able to update windows through my proxy here at work...but that's a different issue."

You should contact IT staff for that issue.

Then you're clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
2) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
3) Agnitum (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
4) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

You can remove all tools we used.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place (http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html)

Happy surfing and stay clean!
