Hi,

I ran Spybot S&D and it found virtumonde on my computer, which I understand is responsible for a heap of popups i'm getting advertising fake anti-virus warnings along with a toolbar in IE.

I have read a few posts on this virtumonde, and have downloaded VundoFix V6.5.11 and run the program,which found a file. Before I run the fix I wanted to check I'm doing the right thing.

What do I do now? Do I use Vundo to fix - sorry if this is a really dumb question, I just did not want to mess the computer up any more with an amateur fix.

Additional Info: A while ago I installed a new version of Norton (from legit CD) which then said the current version needed to be removed before the new version could be installed - since then neither version opens when clicked on. It does a scan each week but I do not seem able to download any updates. I don't know if this will make things hard. Sorry.

First I suggest you take up the Symantec issue with their Technical Support and do it right away also. I don't use Symantec and would only be guessing. They will prbably remove it completely and reinstall it?

Vundo can be tough to remove, the hackers keep changing how they install to confuse us. Here is some information before we start.

I need to suggest it looks like you missed the information I posted above and that is pinned to the top of this forum. Read those instructions so you will know what is expected and please wait until I ask you to run and post the Kaspersky scan results.

Let's start like this and see what happens, seems no two removals wind up the same?

(sounds like you have the program so take what you need from the instructions)

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

1) Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the Vundofix report, a new HJT log and some feedback.

I've run all these, when I restart I got a message from symantec saying I have:

Should I use the program suggested to remove C:\WINDOWS\system32\jcqmaebu.dll to remove this program?

Steve, because you are not following the directions, you are making this harder than it should be and removing Vundo is hard enough!

Thanks, the space between the two halfs of the HJT log is normal. Please don't bother quoting me, you can simply scroll back to see what I said, as can I.

Keep your computer offline except when troubleshooting, this junk will download more!

1) With all files and folders visible

2) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to DomainService and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [c8039345] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\eotxpohf.dll",b
O23 - Service: DomainService - - C:\WINDOWS\system32\uesutoku.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\eotxpohf.dll <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\uesutoku.exe <<< delete that file

5) Run ATF Cleaner

Sorry about the slow start - here goes with the next steps:

1. All files and folders are visible.

2. I clicked the service as instructed but was still connected to the internet somehow, so I turned off the router.

3. Did HJT scan:

"O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [c8039345] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\eotxpohf.dll" I checked and fixed this one.

"O23 - Service: DomainService - - C:\WINDOWS\system32\uesutoku.exe" This one was not on the list - is that because I disabled the Domain Service in Step 2?

4. C:\WINDOWS\system32\eotxpohf.dll - this one would not delete normally so I tried to use HJT but whenever I clicked on the "Delete File on Reboot" button the HJT program closed. So I restarted the computer while disconnected from the internet, looked it up and deleted it. It deleted ok. I reran ATF Cleaner after.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\uesutoku.exe - this deleted straight away

5. Ran ATF Cleaner

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, this is a clean HJT log:bigthumb:
If Symantec is seeing that file, it is probably there, as I said the junk is hard to get rid of. You may navigate to that file and delete it if you wish, it will be here:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcbxu.dll or you can wait until we see what Kaspersky finds.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.
