View Full Version : Smitfraud (i think) - Desktop stuck, errors
I woke up this morning to a black desktop background with the message "Warning! Spyware threat has been detected on your PC," and then it goes on to list my IP and try and get me to buy some fake software. I ran my McAfee virus scan, it came up with nothing, so I did some internet research and that's how I heard about Spybot. I DL'ed it and ran it, cleaned out all kinds of things including Smitfraud, whose description matched the issue.
However, upon restart the background is stuck as the black one with that message. Also, I'm continually getting the Windows "System has recovered from a serious error" message and it repops every time I click Dont Send. I tried to go into Display options and change the background that way, and go into Customize and Web options but it was a no-go. Something is lingering on the system.
I followed the directions in the sticky and re-ran Spybot in Safe Mode, it came up with WebTangent as it's only item, I cleaned it, no fix. Tried to run Kapersky, but it got hung on trying to DL updated data and gave me an error message (tried three times, same message at same point). Including is the HJT log as requested.
Please note that I am a personal PC user, I'm definately no expert and do not understand much past the basics. Thank you so much in advance for taking the time to assist me with my issue.

That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
You may want to print this out as we will be offline for part of the fix.
1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.
We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.
Open Hijackthis to Scan Only, close all open windows including this one , place a checkmark in the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware Free (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-spyware/us/frt/0) to your desktop.
Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
Under Reports
Select Automatically generate report after every scan
Un-Select Only if threats were found
Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
Next select the Reports icon at the top.
Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <--Don't forget this
make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important, I need to see that log.
Close AVG Anti-Spyware Free
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

Thank you for your swift response, ken545. I'm following your instructions to the letter, but a couple things did not work as instructed. For one, the three items you instructed me to delete (kjdsrngk.exe, ldcore.dll, and dbgMSP.dll) were not on my system, with the exception of ldcore.dll, which was in Documents and Settings and not System32 (I deleted it anyway). Is it possible when I checked and ran the Hijackthis Fix Checked that they were deleted then?
I then ran the Anti-Spyware program as instructed, but despite setting it to save logs after every scan, no log was saved. The button to manually save the report is also grayed out. I have typed the scan results here for you by hand. Any other info you request I will endeavor to obtain it.

Please download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe) by OldTimer.
Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.

Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
Download CCleaner from here (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clean temp files from your computer.
Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!
I have problems with some posters not producing a report from the AVG scan, not to worry, but I would like you to run this free online Virus scanner from Panda as it may pick up something that is not on your HJT log.
Run Panda's ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm) and perform a full system scan. This will only run with Internet Explorer
Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
Enter your Country
Enter your State/Province
Enter your e-mail address and click send
Select either Home User or Company
Click the big Scan Now button
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
Save the log someplace you can find
Reboot
Post the Panda scan results in your next reply

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:

Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future
System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points
Turn off System Restore.
Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot your computer
Turn ON System Restore.
Right-click My Computer.
ClickProperties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
