Hi,

I have obtained an irritating virus that has gotten into a .DAT file in System32 folder, I have read through all of the required forum posting and believe I have similar problems as with people posting in the malware forums.

My Symantec lists the following constantly:

Scan type: Realtime Protection Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus name: Downloader
File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c008180C.dat
Location: C:\WINDOWS\system32
Computer: ILLUSTRA-U7XRKN
User: **My Name**
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine failed : Access denied
Date found: 10 November 2007 21:45:37

As sugested I have run the Kaspersky online virus scanner and saved the results to a log file on the desktop (If required I will post later). I have also run a hijackthis from the desktop, and saved a log file as below:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I see that item, we'll see if combofix will remove it. First see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\ <<< out of date and that may be why you are infected. Download the newest version of Java and then uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks

Thanks for returning you information, looks like combofix removed that item and leftovers from Vundo also. We may want to run the updated version of Vundofix again, but first let's try this.

Remove combofix from your computer, be sure to delete the C:\qoobox\quarantine\ folder. Remove the C:\VundoFix Backups folder.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...o/bt_side.html G
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...rch.yahoo.com/
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and run a NEW Kaspersky scan according to these settings:

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here along with a new HJT log and some feedback.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback.

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Sunday, November 11, 2007 4:10:50 PM
Number of infected objects: 3

C:\Program Files\System-A\ie-improver.dll Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Win32.BHO.bo skipped
This is a downloader, I would get rid of the program in red unless you know better?

The other two are infected System Restore files, fix those in a moment:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{ED7B7F39-F3C8-42CF-8343-213141ED35D9}\RP2\A0000003.exe Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Small.gon skipped
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{ED7B7F39-F3C8-42CF-8343-213141ED35D9}\RP2\A0000007.exe Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Win32.BHO.bo skipped

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 16:11:35, on 11/11/2007
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)

I suggest you consider Internet Explorer 7 for the additional security it provides at least:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

As far as I know most programs, the HJT log looks good. I would look it over yourself, make sure you know everything there.

Get rid of that trojan, then restart the computer and do this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

The next Kaspersky scan should be clean:bigthumb:
