Hello!

Well, I have noticed that my PC is getting slower...and yet ive still got loads of HD space left. I've been noticing certain things happening, for example upon starting up i get a message informing me a certain dll encountered an error. Spybot has told me that things are A-Ok, but i've got a very strong feeling that something isn't as it should be.
There are also a lot of duplicates in winlogon...I'm desperate to know whats slowing things down

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Looks like a Vundo infection, if you still need help read the directions posted above and pinned to the top of this forum. I do not need the Kaspersky scan results now and will request it when I do but I do need a HJT log with the correct version 2.0.2. This can be tough one to remove so do not expect easy and the junk can download more so stay offline except when you are troubleshooting.

Recap: Read the directions and post the correct HJT log.
Mention any tools you have run I should know about.

Well, i tried to run kaspersky, it installed correctly, however when it was scanning the PC crashed, to a blue screen.
Windows was restarted and it was doing CHKDSK. I was told this by Microsoft when i re-opened my browser

"This problem was caused by an unrecoverable hardware error that caused the operating system to stop functioning."

I've had this blue screen crash a couple of times (no more than 2 or 3 times) and it seems it only occurs when i run some kind of system scan.

Also, when i ever restart my computer, i always get the following message in a "RUNDLL" window

"Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\j4211832.dll
The specified module could not be found."

Thanks for returning the HJT, so you tried to run Kaspersky before I said...correct.

I do not need the Kaspersky scan results now and will request it when I do
I am aware that this is in your HJT log: C:\WINDOWS\system32\j4211832.dll

How old is the computer? I think we should run a diagnostic as soon as the malware is gone, and CHKDSK also. Make sure I give you those instructions before we finish.

As I said this may be a Vundo infection, I can't tell from looking if it is leftover or not. Let's give HJT a go to see what happens.

C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< return to here and rename HijackThis.exe, call it zHowie.exe, that will work. The next HJT log after a reboot should show the infection if it is there.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\j4211832.dll [/COLOR]<<< delete that file (that is the bad one)

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a [COLOR="red"]new HJT log, any information I requested and any feedback you think will help.

How is the computer running now?

The reason we Use Kaspersky, it is one of the best scans available and it finds stuff hidden from HJT. Give it a try, but if you can run it, don't force it, I will choose another scan.
Please use these instructions and settings:

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Unfortunately it may mean you have problems other than the malware ?

Test Results: First make sure you don't rush out and purchase stuff they want to sell, I believe, unless there is a hardware failure or software issues like out of date drivers, etc. that a properly maintained WindowsXP will run fine without optimizer and boosters.
Look at the results and click each link and read the information. If you have questions, post them but I think you will find this information fairly straight forward and easy to understand.
Key things I am spotting are:

• Defragment files (Drive C)
Drive C has 8% of its files fragmented, and a total of 12% of its data in fragmented files. You should defragment drives as soon as possible for best performance.

System Restore
Drive C has 21066MB of space allocated for System Restore.
Drive D has 7149MB of space allocated for System Restore

I followed those things, could be my PC getting hot.

well my anti virus got nothing.
However upon restarting this morning i got another DLL error notice.


Error loading CTMBHA.DLL
A DLL initialization routine failed.

i can post a HJT if you wish.
