As indicated in the thread title, Spybot S&D detects Win32.bho.df. After fixing the problem and then immediately re-scanning, Spybot again finds the same problem. Scanning from safe mode has no effect.

I appreciate any help you can provide. Here are the HJT and Kaspersky logs:

Hi

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Please click this link-->Jotti (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\logonnotif.dll

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- sdfix report
- jotti/virustotal results

...and here is the third logfile you wanted. Actually, the Jotti scan didn't create a text log, but I copied & pasted what I thought you might want to see.

Please let me know if I've missed something important.

Hi

Do you recognize this file?

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\logonnotif.dll

2007-11-15, 16:33
Hi,

Yes, I recognize the file, but I'm not technically proficient enough to tell you just what it does. It has to do with a solid-state data recorder from Smith's Aerospace.

I don't believe there's anything sinister about that file, but then again, I'm pretty much out of my depth here.

Hope that's helpful. :)

Hi

Thanks for the info :)

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank <--- unless you have set it by yourself
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000001-C003-4A2F-9142-7CB1D78DE6C1} - (no file)
O23 - Service: AOL Instant Messanger (AIM) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\aim.exe (file missing)

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot.

Re-scan with kaspersky.

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- kaspersky report

Shaba,

As directed, I ran HijackThis and <did> check (and fix) all three entries you indicated. You'll notice that the O23 entry is still there, however.

Ok, here are the logs...

Hi

Empty this folder:

C:\SDFix\backups\

Empty Recycle Bin

Still problems?

Hi Shaba,

Deleted contents of C:\SDFix\backups\ and emptied Recycle Bin.

No, I don't think I have any more problems -- my online performance is much better now... even though I'm stuck with a pitiful dial-up account! :)

One question, though: referring back to the last Kaspersky log, it would seem that I should be careful to avoid one particular restore point (RP196?). Is there a way to identify which point that is (or delete it), so that I don't accidentally restore some malware?

Hi

"One question, though: referring back to the last Kaspersky log, it would seem that I should be careful to avoid one particular restore point (RP196?). Is there a way to identify which point that is (or delete it), so that I don't accidentally restore some malware?"

Better way is to empty entire system restore, see instructions below:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
2) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
3) Agnitum (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
4) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Update Adobe Reader
It looks like your version of Adobe Reader is out of date and you're vulnerable for infections.
Please download the newest version here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_servefile.html?option=full&order=1&type=&language=English&platform=WinXPSP2&esdcanbeused=0&esdcanhandle=0&hasjavascript=1&dlm=nos

Install it, then go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any older versions that may remain.

You can remove all tools we used.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Hi Shaba,

I reset system restore, then installed Comodo Firewall v.2.4. The updated Acrobat Reader installer aborted, so maybe it needs XP SP2??? I'll get caught-up with Windows update, then try again.

Anyway, I'd like to say "thanks" for outstanding support -- good advice delivered really quickly!

I'll read those references you linked and try hard to stay out of trouble. :)

Again, thank you!

Hi

Great news :)

"The updated Acrobat Reader installer aborted, so maybe it needs XP SP2??? I'll get caught-up with Windows update, then try again."

Yes, try that again after SP2 installation.
