Hello,
I have run Spybot many times and Virtumonde and Virtumonde.generic are the ones that keep popping back up. I ran HiJackThis -- from looking at other posts, I haven't run the Kaspersky scan yet.
Thanks so much in advance for any help,
Mitch

Hello,
I ran the Kaspersky scan, but the log file is way too long to fit into 2 posts.
Thanks,

Hi
Please attach the Kaspersky scan log ...
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
1. Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
2. When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
3. Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
4. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click "YES".
5. Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
6. When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click "OK".
7. Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt
If vundofix cannot delete a file, it will try to delete it during a reboot, after the reboot vundofix will open again, you must run vundofix again, from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" ... and you must keep running vundofix until it does delete the file... I've known a stubborn vundo file take 5 or 6 reboots before it is deleted...
Keep running vundofix untill it gives you the message "no infected files were found"
THEN ...
Download Superantispyware.
http://www.superantispyware.com/
Once downloaded and installed update the definitions
and then run a full system scan quarantine what it finds!
* Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html
* Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
o Close browsers before scanning.
o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
* Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
* Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
* Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
* A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
* If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
* To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
o Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
* Click Close to exit the program.
THEN ...
Please download Combofix: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe
and save to the desktop.
1. Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
Notes:
* Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.
* Disable script blocking if you have NAV installed so it will not interfere with the fix. Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100.
Please remember to post :-
1. C:\vundofix.txt
2. SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log
3. C:\ComboFix.txt
4. a new hijackthis log.( run after everything else)

Attached is the Kaspersky scan -- I had to zip it up since it was gigantic...
Thanks again!

HI
you have a very dangerous backdoor/remote access trojan...
It has the ability to steal anything from your computer, passwords, bank details, creditcard details, Identify Theft.
Basically, your system has been compromised. Anyone may have had access to anything on your system or done whatever they want to it and hidden it from you.
In cases like this the best option is to do a reformat/reinstall of the operating system ... we can clean all we can see, but we will never know if we have it all, or what damage has been done...
This is the Trojan :-
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\svchost.exe
& it can clearly be seen running in your running processes...
These files probably are being used to store your sensitive data.. (which will be shown in the Combofix log)
C:\z.dat
C:\x.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\user name\x.dat
The very least you should do is not use this computer on the net, except to run the scans I asked for, then disconnect immediately while I give you your next instructions...
But again I urge you to consider reinstalling ...

By this, I mean the files will be shown in Combofix ... NOT your sensitive data.

From your KASPERSKY ONLINE SCAN
Scan Statistics:
Total number of scanned objects: 111979
Number of viruses found: 10
Number of infected objects: 1281
Another reason you should consider reinstalling...
I very rarely suggest a reformat, I believe most computers can be reasonably cleaned without resorting to that... however if this were my computer, I would never trust it again...

Steam,
Thanks so much for following up and I will definitely follow your advice. I luckily have kept it off the internet and used a different computer through the debugging, so I shouldn't be too screwed (maybe). I'll be reformatting and changing passwords now...
Thanks again for all your time and help

Another question,
If I grab files/documents from the "dead" computer via a flash drive, these files aren't affected by the junk I have, correct?
Mitch

Well that depends on which files you are thinking of keeping ...
You have hundreds of cracks/keygens which appear to be mainly in the C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ folder
These were downloaded from wares sites or by P2P programs, & this is where the virus originated from ...
The main executable for the virus is also in that folder ...
I would take nothing from the C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ folder ... & any files you do transfer, be sure to scan them with several scanners before opening any of them.

Other than Spybot and Superantispyware, what other scanners should I use?
Thanks again and again,

Hi
Any files you are unsure of can be scanned here by multiple scanners :-
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
If the site is too busy, then you can try here :-
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Just upload the file & wait for the report ...
If you are unsure about the findings on a file, ask in one of the many forums like this one ...
cheers

Hello again Steam,
Hopefully this is my last set of questions... :D
I reformatted my infected computer by running the HP Recovery Mode that I'm pretty sure resets the system back to how it came from the factory by referencing the factory image from the partitioned drive. This should totally remove all of my issues, yes?
I get free McAfee Security Suite from Comcast, but this version I just downloaded seems to be different than the past version I had. I notice the "mcsysmon.exe" process is constantly running and my hard drive is grinding all the time. This is just crappy McAfee and not some infection causing more problems, yes? I've run Spybot several times and nothing else pops up.
Just some dumb questions since I'm paranoid...
Thanks again and again,
Mitch

Hi
Yes ... doing that you should have a clean system once again ...
RE: McAfee ... I recently got a new laptop ... the first thing I did was remove McAfee & install FREE AVG anti-virus from Grisoft.com ... enough said ?
If you want to run a KASPERSKY ONLINE SCAN, & hijackthis on the new install, I'm more than willing to look them over for you ... for peace of mind.
Superantispyware & Combofix logs if you want ...

Thanks so much for offering to look at the new logs (previous 2 posts). I think I will get rid of McAfee and thanks for the suggestion of AVG.

HI
Your logs are clean ...
You have this courtesy of your computer manufacturer :-
Scan Statistics:
Number of viruses found: 1
Number of infected objects: 3
D:\I386\Apps\APP07885\src\HPSummer2005.exe/WISE0016.BIN Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.MyWay.j skipped
D:\I386\Apps\APP07885\src\HPSummer2005.exe WiseSFX: infected - 1 skipped
D:\I386\Apps\APP07885\src\HPSummer2005.exe WiseSFX Dropper: infected - 1 skipped
It's not-a-virus, HP installs "myway"
It's no biggie, but we can remove it if you want ...
you wont be able to remove it manually because it's in HP's restore partition ... Combofix is the best bet ...
But you'll need to download the newest version to your desktop first ...

Hi
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:
NOTE* make sure to only highlight and copy what is inside the code box nothing out side of it.
Also ..
Pay particular attention to this :-
Make sure the word File:: is on the first line of the text file you save (no blank line above it, & no space in front of it)
File::
D:\I386\Apps\APP07885\src\HPSummer2005.exe
Save this as "CFScript.txt"
Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScript.gif
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply
If you then run a new KASPERSKY ONLINE SCAN , it should say :-
Number of viruses found: 0
Number of infected objects: 0
Number of suspicious objects: 0

Actually they did ... ;)
Number of viruses found: 1

This is what happened ...
Combofix deleted the file (3 infected objects) from your HP restore partition here :-
D:\I386\Apps\APP07885\src\HPSummer2005.exe
But before it deleted the files it did 2 things ...
Created a restore point .... in which we now find these :-
D:\System Volume Information\_restore{2466A83D-1B81-456E-9766-38C2B7E48210}\RP26\A0003791.exe/WISE0016.BIN Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.MyWay.j skipped
D:\System Volume Information\_restore{2466A83D-1B81-456E-9766-38C2B7E48210}\RP26\A0003791.exe WiseSFX: infected - 1 skipped
D:\System Volume Information\_restore{2466A83D-1B81-456E-9766-38C2B7E48210}\RP26\A0003791.exe WiseSFX Dropper: infected - 1 skipped
Then it backed up the file in it's own quarantine folder :-
C:\qoobox\Quarantine\D\I386\Apps\APP07885\src\HPSummer2005.exe.vir/WISE0016.BIN Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.MyWay.j skipped
C:\qoobox\Quarantine\D\I386\Apps\APP07885\src\HPSummer2005.exe.vir WiseSFX: infected - 1 skipped
C:\qoobox\Quarantine\D\I386\Apps\APP07885\src\HPSummer2005.exe.vir WiseSFX Dropper: infected - 1 skipped
So to be finally rid of it we now need to do 2 last things ...
1. Delete the C:\qoobox ... folder
2. Purge system restore ...
This will clear all your infected restore points...
Turn off (Disable) System Restore in XP :-
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer.
Then...
Turn on (enable) System Restore :-
Follow the same procedure, but this time uncheck Turn off System Restore
if you have any problem with this... here's a link to instructions :-
Disabling or enabling Windows XP System Restore >

Thanks so much again, Steam, for all your help. Couldn't have done it without you (obviously) :bigthumb:
One last side question -- can you recommend any firewall programs for Vista? Or just stick with Windows Firewall?
Thanks,
Mitch

Hi
You're very welcome ...
I've always been very satisfied with Zonealarm free firewalls both on XP & before that on my win98 ...
I know they've had a lot of teething troubles with running it with vista, but I believe most if them are worked out, though I know some people still have trouble running it with vista...
Zonealarm Free 7.1.100.000 - Size / OS: 17.5 MB, Windows 2K/XP/Vista
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/ZoneAlarm-Free.shtml
The FREE Comodo Firewall is supposed to work well with vista .. But I can't guarantee it, some people can't get it to work either ...
