Matware, and popups cannot remove

For the past week, my PC has been plagued by Security Alert, System Performance monitor warnings, System Alerts all stating that I have Malware and viruses and asking me to click to download anti spyware software. I have run Spybot several times and the items reported Virtumonde, Smitfraud C etc keep coming back.

I have posted my current HJT log and the summary from Kasperskys Online Scanner (the logfile is very long). Can you please advise how to clean my PC?

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Once I have sent this reply, I willdisconnect my PC from the internet and will continue to correspond from a clean PC. What are the trojans which particularly concern you. Should I send you a log of the current Kaspersky online scan?

Before I go down the re-formatting route I would like to consider very carefully what the risks are of cleaning the existing PC. I have been using the windows firewall and CA Anti Virus with auto updates with real time protection on.

I do use the PC for banking and shopping.

I will check with my bank, on line credit card and not use my PC for banking or shopping until cleaned or re-formatted. I have not used my PC for shopping or banking since the malware attack on Saturday on 10th November.

In your expert opinion, can the PC be cleaned successfully and what are the risk of cleaning versus a format/re-install. I am fairly sure I have all the original disks, but would have to be given a step by step guide to do this option..

It is variant of SDbot trojan. This is a very serious threat and I can't caution you enough about the damage going on. This is beyond a spyware/adware problem in that this infection includes this extremely dangerous backdoor/remote access trojan. We are seeing quite a few of these and it is one of the nastier infections we have seen in quite a while.

Basically, your system has been compromised. Anyone may have had access to anything on your system or done whatever they want to it and hidden it from you.


The trojan was running as evidenced by these entries in your log:

Please check your hard drive for z.dat and x.dat files. These files were likely created by the trojan to hold and transmit stolen account data and passwords to the attacker. Rename the files to z.txt and x.txt and open them with notepad to see what passwords have been captured. Then change these passwords on CLEAN machine and delete those files after that.


As I told you I would take re-format route. There's a good tutorial (http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat) written by wng_z3r0.
