Tried loading McAfee - no success

After reading your 'before you post!' message, attempted to run:

Spybot S&D upgraded (successful, found and fixed)
HJT 1.99 (:oops: Wrong version)
HJT 2.02 (successful - posted below)
Kaspersky (tried loading, received database error at very end).

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Hello Jane, I would like to help, first some information to get us started.

1) C:\windows\system32\wuauclt.exe see this >>> http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/wuauclt/
While hackers can and do call their junk anything they wish, I have not seen that file used in a while. I also don't see it running in the HJT log which would be normal, it would popup to tell you about updates you need to download and install and once finished, it would no longer be running.

2) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/2003/s1407/38s07/38s07.asp
C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exe
C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\mcvsshld.exe

Troubleshooting issues is tough enough without not knowing what is being caused by the conflictions that occur when two av's are running like this, uninstall one.

2) I will say I can see no "malware" in your HJT log, this does not mean something could not be hiding from HJT which is why we run the scan. If the information I have provided does not clear your problems, and you still have some reason to suspect malware, then let's try Kaspersky again:
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

If it will not run, let me know and I will chose another free scan.

Thanks...Phil

Phil,

Thank you for your suggestions, I have since executed the following:
1. Removed all Mcafee (I was actually attempting to install the latest version from CD when it failed, thus the AVG)
2. Removed all AVG
3. Reboot
4. Purchased/installed NOD32, ran successfully without any viruses found
5. Removed leftover Kaspersky (as I mentioned before, it failed during the database initialization)
6. Reboot
7. Removed other various software that was no longer needed
8. Reboot
9. Attempted to reinstall/run Kaspersky, failed again in database setup
10. Removed Kaspersky
11. Reboot
(Note: at this point, I am still seeing the blank pop-up window with muauclt.exe - but computer appears to be restarting more quickly)
12. Ran Spybot, fixed files it found
13. Attempted to reboot, got BSOD
14. Rebooted in Safe mode, ran HJT - log is below:

Thanks for the feedback, I wil only respond where I feel it is needed:

9. Attempted to reinstall/run Kaspersky, failed again in database setup
10. Removed Kaspersky
We will try another scan

(Note: at this point, I am still seeing the blank pop-up window with muauclt.exe - but computer appears to be restarting more quickly)It can't be all black, if you see the words muauclt.exe There is no information at all, where does this popup originate on your computer? From the System Tray?

Start > Control Panel > Security Center and tell me if all three green lights to the right are ON. Click on Automatic Updates and tell me where you have the bullit.

Attempted to reboot, got BSOD
I need any error messages in conjunction with the BSOD, any error message period you get from Windows. Post those word for word.
We may have other issues? Let me get more information first. How much RAM is installed on this computer?
Right click MyCompuer then Properties. RAM will be in the lower right corner.

Please post all HJT logs in Normal Boot Mode unless I reqestion otherwise.

Post the information I requested and a new HJT log created while in Normal Boot Mode.

Thanks...Phil

Add any comments you think will help.

Hi Phil!

Thank you much for the quick turnaround!

Okay, here is the update:

1. After the BSOD (which hasn't happened again), I had to run in Safe mode, so that is where the safe-mode HJT originated. I was able to subsequently reboot into normal mode, the rest of my efforts were conducted there.

2. RE: my description of the pop-up window, it actually is the same window you would see if you click Start-Run and then type 'cmd' and press enter, only instead of '...cmd.exe' at the end of the file name in the title bar, the file name is 'c:\windows\system32\wuauclt.exe' in the titlebar. This window pops up whenever I start the control panel and 'add or remove programs'.

3. Start-Control Panel-security center - yes, all three green lights are ON.

4. The bullet is on the first option, update automatically (at 3am). The process of opening the Automatic Updates tab, and waiting for a response, takes a REALLY long time - as in, many minutes (at least 8?).

5. I'm running 2.0GHz with 256RAM - not much, really all I run is Explorer and Outlook, and occasionally burn a few CDs.

6. I did attempt to re-install Kaspersky, actually, uninstall and reinstall several times, with no success. At least the message has changed from 'database not successfully initialized' to 'You must be connected to the internet - 21', which I am already so not sure what the problem is there.

I have to travel until Sunday noon (troubleshooting my home desktop computer) so I won't be able to test anything else until then!

Thank you, again, for your help!

Jane

Thanks for the feedback, unless I can get an error message there is no way I can troubleshoot the BSOD from here. If you ask Google for BSOD issues, see what you get:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=troubleshoot+bsod+messages&btnG=Google+Search (1,430,000)

The HJT log looks fine, the only thing I looked at twice was:
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [DELDIR0.EXE] "C:\DOCUME~1\jcanniff\LOCALS~1\Temp\DELDIR0.EXE" "C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Shared Components\Guardian\"
It looks like you are running a Guardian progam from McAfee.

Let's run a free diagnostic here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/
If you register (free) you will be able to send me a link to your Test Restults. Here is a link to another persons results, so you will know what link I need:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/Summary.asp?TechExpress=WBEHSW9RXGVS19GV

Keep an eye open for error messges, it would be very rare for Windows to experience a BSOD without sending you an error message.

Thanks...Phil
