I followed the instructions in the "before you post" thread except for the fact that I could not run Spybot S&D in safe mode, my PC kept interrupting me to ask me if i wanted to run safe mode or if I wanted to restore my system. I also updated my Java to the most current edition.

Any help that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Also, just a side comment here, I currently have Norton 360 and tried to use that program to resolve this issue and some other issues with pop ups telling me I had spy ware and forcing me to another website and could not resolve it with that program. So I download Spybot S&D for free and it resolves almost all of them FOR FREE! Norton told me I'd have to talk with a Tech guy for a fee to help resolve this issue...after I'd been a paid subscriber for years and years. Needless to say I love love love my Spybot and Thank you very much.

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\ <<< your Java progam is BADLY out of date and likely why you are infected. Download the newest version and uninsall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

Thanks for the new log, you are doing fine, not to worry. After the period of time I wanted to be sure you still needed help before investing time. These lowlife hackers have found a way to hide their infections from HJT. Please return here:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< rename HJT, call it RallyReal.exe that will work, then restart the computer and post a new HJT log. To be clear, the file will now look like this:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\RallyReal.exe and Vundo should be showing in the next log if it is there.

I caution you to keep the computer offline except when troubleshooting, this junk can download more.

I followed the path that your instructions gave me and if I understand them correctly, I basically renamed the HJT program with the icon of the little red man with the magnifying glass as RallyReal and then I ran the same program and posted the log. Hi Andy, you are doing fine, if I did not mention this before, I should do so now. You have a Vundo infection which can be very hard to remove. This will take some time and unless you are patient, understand how to follow directions and are comfortable working on your computer, you may want to seek local professional help. If you wish to proceed, read and follow the directions carefully.

It looks like you have been working on this but the infection is still there: C:\WINNT\system32\jkhhe.dll and often much of it is hidden. You have other junk also, and remember the junk can morph and download more junk, so stay offline except when you are troubleshooting until you are clean. You probably see a lot of the junk in the log, and we will get to that, but I wish to run a couple of tools first. If you have either tool, please delete your copy and download the updated copy from the link I provide.

TeaTimer will block changes we must make, use these instruction to turn it off until we are done.

"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot. Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

Hey Phil,

I started to follow the instructions that you provided and I tried to turn off Tea Timer and SD Helper in Spybot S&D and I never get the confirmation pop up to allow the change to Spybot. I don't know if that's important, but after I restart my computer if I open up Spybot, the Tea Timer box is already checked again but the SD Helper is unchecked. So I tried unchecking it a couple of times and restarting my computer and then I got sick of it and opened VundoFix. It scans for less than a minute and says "No Infected Files were found."

----->Also, in the lower right hand corner of my screen (the system tray?) with all the little icons of things that are running in the background, I don't see the Spybot icon when I uncheck the Tea Timer and SD Helper. I do see it when they are checked.

So after not getting anywhere with the VundoFix I have not proceeded with the instructions, I have no new scans to post, and I have rechecked the two boxes mentioned above. What do you recommend?

Yeah, so when I rechecked the boxes, the allow change? box came up so I allowed it and then went back and unchecked them both again and then finally got the allow change box. So now I'm going to restart my computer and then do the VundoFix scan again and hopefully report back with better results. Sorry. It's like a madhouse, this thread!

Andy, I need that Vundofix.txt even if it shows noting, information I want to see. It will be on the C:\

Sad to report this is a newer infection that loads you up with junk. Look at the files:
Files Created from 2007-11-01 to 2007-12-01 and you will see all of the files created by Vundo during the last month. I had to manually check each file before I can ask you to remove it, so this is going to take a while. I could have you check them, if you wish, but I might be a bit quicker since I recognize the junk. This is very time consuming, the guys who create our tools are working on a quicker way to identify them, but it is still in the works.

So...post the Vundo.txt and stay offline so they can not download more junk.

Save this as vundofix.vft and Save as type "all files".
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Drag vundofix.vft onto the listbox (white box) of VundoFix.
Click the "Remove Vundo" button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINNT\yejnxjt.exe <<< delete that file if there

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the Vundofix log, a new HJT log and some feedback.

Phil,

I followed your instructions to the letter. Everything went swimmingly. The first posting of the VundoFix file is the one I should have posted with my previous rash of postings. Sorry about that.

I did not find the "C:\WINNT\yejnxjt.exe <<< delete that file if there" in the C:\WINNT file so as per your instructions I did not delete.

And before I did anything I disabled the TeaTimer and it will remain disabled until we are finished.

Maybe it's best if you check the files because I have no idea what I'd be checking for. If you'd like my help slogging through them I will try my best.

Restart the computer and clean the System Restore files:
MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The next Kaspersky scan will be clean if you followed the directions, I do not need to see a clean scan result.
