View Full Version : Firefox acting up, computer running slow, popups appearing!

About a week ago I starting getting popups on my computer using both Firefox and IE 6.0. In addition, firefox has been encountering errors and shutting down. In addition, often when I go to open firefox, it says a copy is already running (when it is not) and I have to go to the task manager and manually shut it down to restart the program.

All computer processes seem to be running slower as well. I currently have AVG installed, windows defender, spybot s&d, spyware blaster, and run the tea timer with spybot.

The problem seems spyware related to me, but none of the scans have produced anything. I have attached a HJT log and the online virus scanner log. The online virus scanner indicated a virus infection, but all I could find in the log was an adware file.

My computer is used by a number of people so I am not sure what sites have been visited, but I believe nothing out outside of normal surfing. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Regards,

Kevin

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I do not see anything either, the one item Kapersky flagged is this and infected System Restore file.
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP174\A0035270.dll Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.NewWeb.ar skipped

A couple of things, 1) provide more more information about the "popups", specific infections cause specific popups.
2) Are you receiving an error messages, if so post them word for word.
3) Do you have multiple user accounts? If so, make me aware and be sure the HJT log I am seeing is from the admin account.
4) Why are you still runing IE6 when IE7 is available and affords better security?

Let's have combofix take a look, see if it finds anything:
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Also provide any information I requested.

Thanks

I have run the ComboFix program and HJT and have posted the logs below. The logs are from the one and only admin account on this computer. I originally was not using IE7 because it conflicted with a program I needed to run for school, but is now compatible and I have now upgraded to IE7. I also upgraded to the newest version of Firefox. It still boots very slowly compared to IE, but that may just be a negative to Firefox. The error message I do get when FireFox malfunctions is: "Firefox has encountered an error and needs to close" and then I usually have to manually close it through task manager in order to restart it. It has not occurred though since I upgraded to the new version.

The popups I have been getting are ads and seem to appear when I am doing any type of research through sites like google and then choose to visit one of the search results websites.

As far as the item flagged by Kapersky, do I need to delete or repair it?

FYI, when I was running ComboFix, I forgot and left the spybot tea timer on. About 10 items were flagged with registry value changes (mostly web browser home pages), but I went ahead and allowed them assuming that is what the program was supposed to do. Let me know if this was an error on my part.

Thanks for all the help and have a great week.

Kevin

As far as the item flagged by Kapersky, do I need to delete or repair it?
System Restore gets reset by turning it off, rebooting and turning it on, we will do that last, that item can do you no harm where it is.

combofix did remove some junk, and I see nothing in the HJT log. I suggest you look at this information:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html
to see if some of those proceedures speed you a some. You may as well get rid of that one infected System Restore file also:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

If Firefox continues to run slow, I suggest you uninstall it and download the program new from here:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

We are finished with combofix, delete the program and the qoobox\quarantine folder, the program does not update and would need to be download new if ever needed again.

I'll post this information for you so you can benefit from it:
Here is some great information from experts in this field that will help you stay clean and safe online.

Well I guess it is looking pretty good now. Don't seem to be having any problems (popups, firefox, errors, etc.). One problem I am having though is regarding a windows update install. Then following update will not install after repeated attempts. Do you have any idea what the problem is? Maybe it will just take a few times.

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

Thanks again for the help. Have a great day.

Sincerely,

Kevin

Hi Kevin, thanks for the feedback, perhaps some of this information will help.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885055
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Microsoft+.NET+Framework+1.1+Service+Pack+1&btnG=Google+Search
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=can%27t+install+Microsoft+.NET+Framework+1.1+Service+Pack+1&btnG=Google+Search
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=windows+Update+troubleshooting&btnG=Search

It usually helps to know the error message you are receiving from Windows also.

If none of this helps, ask for it here: http://support.microsoft.com/
That is, afterall, what we pay them for.

Thanks...Phil
