View Full Version : Incredibly slow, virus infected computer, unknown viruses - help needed please.
*Same user, different computer.
Hi! I have been so impressed with the help I have received from steamwiz in fixing up my personal computer that I’ve come back for more.
I am hoping that I can get some help in cleaning up another family member’s computer. It has been running very, very, very slow for along time now, after getting a hammering from my teenage brother P2P/po*n etc, so god knows will be found! LOL! When I say slow….. I mean that the speed this computer and its broadband internet connection runs at redefines the term slow LOL!
Any help in cleaning up this computer would be very much appreciated.
I have taken the following steps so far:
Removed McAfee (site advisor still remains, but anti-virus has been removed)
Replaced with AVG - installed and running – but no scan has yet been run with it yet, although it has picked up various threats along the way today that I’ve put in the vault.
Run Kaspersky scan – see log below
Installed and run SpyBot S&D which, when originally installed and run a few months back when first installed, picked up a TON of stuff and deleted. I have also tried to run it in safe mode after running the Kaspersky scan, but again cant start computer in safe mode (may have something to do with wireless keyboard and receiver not being on until computer has finished starting up?), so just ran it in normal mode and it found and removed mainly just tracking cookies, but a couple of Trojans too.

what is that a honey pot your running??
first: i would use this computer as little as possible. in fact disconnect it at the modem when not in use. not sure what to make of all those double .exe. we can try this:
first we will use hjt, then boot into safe mode to look for and delete a bunch of files. you should copy/paste the safe mode part into notepad and save it so you can find and read it in safe mode. hjt can delete some 04's but we will look for them anyway.
to help show all files:
FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok
next we will use hjt:
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

safe mode part
see all those 04 items above? copy paste the list above into notepad, save it to desktop. once in safe mode see if you can find all those .exe in the c:\windows\system32 dir.
example:
navigate to c:\windows\system32 dir, if you click on name at top it will sort them alpabetically, easier to find.
then just go down the list and delete each 04 item one by one:

while in safe mode also run your AVG antivirus and spybot once. and do this;
Empty your Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

OK, Ive done all you have said. When checking through system32 dir there were matching _nav.dat & _navapps.dat files for each of the .exe files you had me delete plus a whole heap more oddly named .exe files (like prdjfuk.exe) with corresponding _nav.dat & _navapps.dat files along with them. - anything to worry about? or all normal?
Both the spybot S&D scan and the AVG scan turned up nothing when run in safe mode.

hi,
glad to help. yes i would delete the matching_nav.dat & _navapps.dat files for each .exe that you deleted. Can probably be done in "normal" mode.
also delete those "oddly" named exe file. if you sort by "modified" at the top the odd files should show up first having a more recent creation date.
i dont think there should be very many .exe files in the system 32 dir. if you are not sure if it should be deleted leave it. to check that its not a needed windows file you can right click on it and select properties and under one of the tabs you will see if its a windows file.

OK, eleted all those other odd .exe and all matching _nav.dat & _navapps.dat files in system 32 dir (there was a loooong list and all up would have deleted about 300 files :eek:
I then double checked the recycle bin to make sure no windows needed files had been accidently deleted and did a disk clean up.
I also uninstalled the 'ask jeeves toolbar'. I dont know what 'mailskinner' is, certianly havent downloaded it myself, but could very well have been downloaded by someone else - -intnetionaly or otherwise (luckily they have all moved out now so the computer will be safe from re-infection once its all clear! :laugh: )
Should I remove it? I cant see it listed in the add/remove programs panel....
Ive done the F-Secure scan which picked up an insane amount of spyware files!

ok good. looks like the f-secure scan got rid of mailskinner along with other stuff.
do you have two anti-virus? i see avg and macafee? only one antivirus is needed on a computer. you can use more than one anti-malware app though.
EDIT; never mind i re-read your earlier post.
i suggest a 2nd anti-malware app to go along with spybot.

I installed both as I wanted to see the difference in what they picked up. AVG found a few, but then I ran Superantispyware after and it picked up much more - like in the 100's

difference in what they picked up.
both are good at finding/removing malware the difference in numbers could be one is showing harmless registry leftovers or tracking cookies.
for that pop up lets try running smitfraud:
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/smitfraudfix.php
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: c:\rapport.txt
stop at this point and post a HijackThis log and the contents of the c:\rapport.txt.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I have so far noticed a small improvement in the computers performance. But it is still running very much in slow motion - especially when first started up - it takes at least 15 minutes to load everything. Then even the most simple tasks, like opening the start menu can take a full 5 minutes.
Do you think that theres a good chance of getting it cleaned up this way? Its in such a dire state (and virtually unusable) that I was about to try my hand at reformatting the computer, but then came across the fantastic help here after getting virtumonde (+ others) on my own computer.
If you think there is a good chance of getting it running properly again without having to reformat it and I'm just being impatient because its just early days yet in getting it cleaned up, then by all means, please tell me to get back in my box! LOL!
I just don't want to be wasting your time if its looking like a lost cause!

malware is getting more and more invasive, hiding better and getting harder and harder to get rid of. a reformat in some cases would be the quickest and safest thing to due.
your hjt log is looking better but thats not always conclusive evidence.

yep, I know what you mean. Thats the main problem I see with trying to clean up this machine, its about 4 years old, and for about a year had no virus/adware protection at all and during that time was absolutely hammered by my (then) teenage brother. So even after some kind of protection (McAffee) was installed by someone, it was already very badly infected. Ill try all I can before resorting to reformatting though as I really don't want to go there unless I have to.

Ive done another Kaspersky Log, but it is too long to post (would take about 5 posts to get it all up here.)
The summary is:

thanks for all the info.
one year is along time without any anti-malware or anti-virus software. it must have been unusable at some point.no telling whats on it.
you mention its 4 years old. windows can get gunked up over time. i reformat mine once or twice a year. it can make a difference.
is that Kaspersky online scanner removing/deleting the infected files its finding?
you can upload it as a attachment, iam not sure what the size limitation is though. i suggest doing another online scan also or you can try another scanner like this one:

Just tried to upload the file, but its waaaaay over limit LOL!
kaspersky isn't deleting any files, as I haven't purchased the software.
I'm just running the f-secure scan now.
OK, I tried to run the f-secure scan twice today and got an error part way though it each time. So hours later.... (and not to mention the tediously slow OS!)
After looking again into formatting the c drive Ive realised that being an HP computer, it has a partition with the recovery ready to go and will do the formatting for me. So Ive decided to give this a go and if it doesn't fix it, Ill just go ahead and format it manually.
This way I know the computer will be clean and it will take far less work in the long run.
Thank you so much for all the time you have given to help me try and clean it up. It certainly hasn't gone wasted! as I have learned a lot about keeping a computer protected and the various programs to help me :)

your welcome, and i think thats a good idea. a year with no apps on it is a long time. no telling whats on it. i wouldn't feel comfortable trying to get it cleaned up.
FYI: ive never used a recovery cd before. i would make sure from the HP website that it will really reformat your HD and not just do a reinstall.

Just wanted to report back to let you know that the reformat went well and the computer is like new again!
I had 2 options, to do a 'reinstall recovery' or a 'destructive recovery' which completely reformatted the hard drive, so went ahead and did that, then had the army of anti-virus anti-spyware ready to install from a memory stick before connecting the computer to the web to collect and install all the windows upgrades/security fixes.

ok good, glad to help. thanks for the info. I know it has to be running a lot better now, like you said: "like new".
as for apps i suggest;
Antivirus (one)
Anti-malware (two is enough)
Firewall
having a load of "security" apps dosn't increase your security, many overlap in what they do and will just chew up system resources.
and of course learn how you get malware in the first place. to be blunt; its because of ones own actions. not knowing some of the "how i got it", you will repeat it sooner. see my first link below for prevention tips.
