In spybot's own definition of virtumonde, something my computer was diagnosed with several months age, it said a randomly named dll was added to the winlogon notifiers. Haveing only found this file in a few forum posts via google, all concerning removal of malware, i used HJT to remove it. My HJT log, done a few hours ago:

I should note that I have not been able to see the hidden files option for a few months, around the time my pc was first diagnosed with Virtumonde. The system files option is still visible. This doesn't make much difference, since i modified the hidden fles option in the registry, but it's still odd, and may help fix the problem. My account might be the only affected, and it is an administrator.

Hello and welcome to the Forums :)

You're infected.

Please rename HijackThis.exe to skanneri.exe
Post a fresh HijackThis (skanneri.exe) log to here.

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

C:\windows\system32\_c006A7C4 could not be deleted
not even on reboot, I think it somehow managed to put something into the startup entries, possibly winlogon notify. Should I try safe mode w/ command prompt to delete it (safe mode hasn't worked for some time, might be disabled...), the windows xp repair console or a knoppix cd?

no, that file's still there for some reason

Mr_JAk3
2007-11-24, 16:21
Ok we'll use another tool then...

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

thanks for the reply. Is it possible this is affecting the way vista recognises a pc? On my new pc, it's a 'media device'.
Btw, I scanned this computer with another one, symantec corporate 10.1.... would you like the results?

Bobby123
2007-11-25, 00:44
got a 'blue screen' (system error, memory dumping) message. combofix removed that file and put it into a compressed 'catchme' folder.

attached file is one I got after the 'blue screen', it's some 'bad image file, concerning the data file removed. I believe someone else had a similar message on these forums.

:oops:sorry, forgot to add: it appears when an application opens, really annoying at startup.

Hello :)

That error is related to the infection and we'll get rid of it.
Please post the combofix log (C:\Combofix.txt) to here :bigthumb:
And yes you can post the Symantec results too

Bobby123
2007-12-01, 23:44
sorry, combofix never saved a log.
and the symantec results are just from files quarrantined by avast, I checked. It appears I only have 1 week to troubleshoot it before it's reformated:sad:
My new Vista pc is up and I've moved my most important files. Since I can only go on my old pc on the weekend, I really hope you can help.

Bobby123

not much chance of re-running combofix, the image errors pop up at least 30 times when I execute the file.

Combofix now says it's been uninstalled after i finally managed to get it to run... The app has disappeared from my desktop.

Hi :)

Okay we'll try running ComboFix in safe mode then.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
2. Restart your computer to the safe mode:
Restart your computer
Start tapping the F8 key when the computer restarts.
When the start menu opens, choose Safe mode
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
3. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
4. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Restart the pc to normal mode if it isn't already.
5. Post the file C:\ComboFix.txt to here.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

:santa:

It's probably too late... I have trouble booting into safe mode, it freezes:sad:. Thanks for the help but I'll just reformat. I've moved my important files to my new computer and neither sbybot or NIS2007 can detect anything. Thanks again for the time you took to help me:).

Hi :)

okay I'll respect your decision.

Here are a few links may help.

Reformatting Windows XP by wng_z3r0 (http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/mainnopics.html)
When should I re-format? How should I reinstall? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)
Windows XP Clean install (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm)

Then there are a couple of things you should do immediately after installing Windows and before surfing the net... Install an antivirus and firewall (you should download and have those on a CD or USB drive, all ready to be installed).

These are good (free) firewalls:
- Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
- Sygate (http://http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356)
- Outpost (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1056)

These are good (free) antiviruses:
- Antivir (http://www.free-av.com)
- Avast (http://www.avast.com)
- AVG (http://free.grisoft.com)

Get all Windows updates installed!
Please ask me if you have any questions :)

Then here are a few things that you can do in order to make your fresh computer more secure:
Use ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1)
Download and install ATF Cleaner. Clean your temporary files & folders with it regularly.

Use Ad-Aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use Ewido (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use Spybot S&D (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)
Download and install Spybot S&D. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Install SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

Install MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

Use Firefox browser (http://www.mozilla.org)
Firefox is faster, safer and better browser than Internet Explorer.

Keep your systen up-to-date (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
Visit Windows Update regularly.

Keep your antivirus and firewall up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with your antivirus.
