View Full Version : Trojan PSW.Generic5.UWD in cscu.dll file

My AVG free Virus software found a Trojan Horse located in C://WINDOWS/System32/cscu.dll (this is not a typo-the file is not cscui, it is cscu). I cannot get rid of it.

I'm using Windows XP in a DELL Inspiron 2650 Laptop.

I scanned with Ad Aware, Spybot S&D 1.4, both with updates, and I upgraded to AVG Anti-Malware full version and scanned with that. Spybot found and "Alexa related problem" and fixed it.

AVG has been consistant in finding the Trojan and either "healing" it or moving it to the Virus Vault (where I later delete it), BUT it always shows up again. The message I get from AVG is: "Threat Detected! While opening file C:WINDOWS/System32/cscu.dll Trojan Horse PSW.Generic5.UWD".

I have looked at the file and it is 92.0KB, created 11/08/07, modified 8/18/01 (same date as my other MS Windows files) , accessed today. I tried to manually delete the file, but access was denied. I did copy it to a floppy disk (for later burning over an open flame!!).

I also used Hijackthis to try to remove the file (before I found this forum). I tried the remove on reboot option in HJT several times, with no luck.

I read the instructions for this forum and I have the logs for both Kaspersky and HJT. I will paste HJT below. This post is getting long, so I don't know if there is room for the Kaspersky log too, but I'll try.
Thanks for helping-viki

Hi vikigar

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. You are quite behind on your Windows Updates and Patches!!

The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Click here to get WinXP SP1a: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0136e5f8-1684-4202-b2d0-c6a43430f12a&DisplayLang=en)

Apply the update, reboot, then go to Windows Update and install all the Critical Updates (Note: Except for WinXP SP2)
Click here for Windows Update: http://www.windowsupdate.com/ (http://www.windowsupdate.com/)

After installing all the Patches and updates, reboot, then post a fresh Hijack This log.

I tried to download SP 1a, but it would take about 6-8 hours on my slow dial-up connection. I'll have to find another method. I have WinXP SP2 on a CD, but you said not to use that, so I won't. I'm sure the Critical Updates will pose a similar problem because of my slow connection.

Also, I have been hesitant to use the infected computer to access the Internet because I read that a virus with PSW in the name means it's a password stealer. Is that correct? What precautions should I take before I use the infected PC to access the Internet? Do I need to change every password I've ever used? I know I sound paranoid, but I've never had a virus before.

Hi

You can try to download SP1a from computer with faster connection and burn it to CD.

"Also, I have been hesitant to use the infected computer to access the Internet because I read that a virus with PSW in the name means it's a password stealer. Is that correct? What precautions should I take before I use the infected PC to access the Internet? Do I need to change every password I've ever used? I know I sound paranoid, but I've never had a virus before."

Well if it really is a keylogger/password stealer I recommend to do these anyway (we can't be 100% sure now):

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Hi

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Please click this link-->Jotti (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cscu.dll

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Hi.
I did the scan on jotti and got the following message:
"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file."

When I checked the file it shows the size as 92.0 kb.

Hi

1. Download combofix from one of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link2 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Hi.
ComboFix stalled during "deleting files/folders". I stopped the process sed.cfexe (after waiting over 20 min.). Message: "system cannot find the path specified"

Hi

Thanks for info.

Anyway, looks like that file got deleted :)

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Hi-
Good News/Bad News..........I thought that the ComboFix program hadn't worked because it stalled out at a critical time, but you're right, the problem file cscu.dll is actually gone! I'm thrilled about that. However (this is the bad part), when I ran Kaspersky again it showed 2 viruses found and 4 infected objects. The message "your computer is infected" was displayed at the end of the process. When the program tried to delete the infected files it showed a long list of files that were labeled "object is locked-skipped". So it looks like there is still more work to do.

I really appreciate your help. Thanks for hanging in there with me. I'm still hopefull........vikigar

Here's the new HJT file.
I'll be busy and away from home a lot for the next 4-5 days because of the Christmas holiday so I might not be able to post another reply until 12/27. I hope you are enjoying the holiday season.

Hi

I see that you have uninstalled AVG.

Any reason for that?

vikigar
2007-12-21, 20:55
The AVG was a trial verson of the full program and it expired yesterday. I have been using the AVG Free program on another machine, so I thought I might install it on the problem machine too. What do you recommend?

Shaba

Hi

See my suggestions from below:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

After installing, please post back a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi

"Do you think my computer is finally virus free?"

Yes :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
2) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
3) Agnitum (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
4) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Update Adobe Reader
It looks like your version of Adobe Reader is out of date and you're vulnerable for infections.
Please download the newest version here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_servefile.html?option=full&order=1&type=&language=English&platform=WinXPSP2&esdcanbeused=0&esdcanhandle=0&hasjavascript=1&dlm=nos

Install it, then go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any older versions that may remain.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Instructions for Spybot S & D (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

Shaba-
Thanks for reopening this. I have 2 more questions/issues.

1. You told me not to install Win XP Service Pack 2 a while back. Do you think I should install it eventually or avoid it completely?

2. I got a suspicious email recently. It was a notification of failed email attempt, returned to sender (me), but I didn't send it in the first place. It was titled *absolve self-loathing*. The intended email addresses that were listed as rejected were very similar to my own email address. I'm wondering if that is a virus indicator, or does email just get redirected sometimes? Why is an email being returned to me as the sender when I didn't send it in the first place?

Lastly, I want to say that I think this forum is a great service to the public. I'm so impressed with the help I have received. Your advice has been awesome. I'm so glad the Good Guys are smarter than the Bad Guys!

Thank you so much.:bighug:

Hi

1. Yes, you should install SP2 now :)

2. That is a trick used by spam mailers/virus senders. You haven't send it. So nothing to worry about; I get also sometimes those kind of mails.

Thanks again.
I believe I'm finished using this forum for now, and I hope that I never need it again, but it's nice to know it's here just in case.
