View Full Version : REG/Zapchast Trojan

Hello. I have recently encountered a REG/Zapchast Trojan (detected by NOD32). My system has begun to experience excessive lag and freezes quite frequently, as opposed to before where it never froze at all.

I have tried using Kaspersky's online scanner, however, the scan failed due to unknown errors despite the number of times attempted the scan. Another thing to note is that Spybot also failed to complete its problem scan. It said "Scan has been aborted by user" regardless of the fact that the scan was done while i was AFK. Fortunately, I am able to provide a HiJackThis log as followed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You have more infections, but this is the one I am concerned with most:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinUpdater.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Updater] WinUpdater.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Updater] WinUpdater.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/WINUPDATER.EXE-9941.html
Read all information under all tabs so you know what you are dealing with:
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_RBOT.IP

I also believe you should have this information, this is a backdoor trojan:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Thank you for your reply. I have thoroughly read the information from the links that you have provided, and acknowledge that any advice is taken at my own risk. With that being said, I would like to mention that this computer is merely for gaming, music, chatting, etc. Therefore identity theft, and internet fraud should not be an issue. Also, reformatting is not preferred as it can be a hassle, but if it is mandatory then please say so.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback, and it is surely not mandatory, let's see what HJT will do for us.

1) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."

http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/2003/s1407/38s07/38s07.asp

C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\
C:\Program Files\Eset\
Uninstall one of those

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinUpdater.exe <<< delete that file

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log and some feedback.

I have carefully followed your steps and encountered no problems during the process, but after I restarted my computer, NOD32 detected something new. I don't know how big of a threat it is but is called Win32/Adware.Look2Me application. If you need me to do anything about this please request so. Anyways, here is my updated HJT log. Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, what I need to know is exactly what ESET sees, where exactly is it located and why did ESET not remove the malware for you? I know you don't have that last answer, but the program should have provided more information, the HJT log is showing nothing.

I want you to try the Kaspersky scan again, if it won't work, let me know and I will post another scanner, but before you do that, update ESET and run a complete system scan, post the information I need about the location of the malware, ESET will tell you at the end of the scan. If you can, post the results of the scan.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

Hi again. I completed a full system scan with ESET and it looks like it was able to clean the malware I mentioned before. Also, I tried Kaspersky online scanner and it was successful, but it seems that I was unaware of several other viruses and infections. :sad: I will await further instructions before dealing with these problems. Below are the results for both the ESET scan and the Kasper scan. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the feedback, I have a tool for Look2Me we can run if you see any evidence of it.

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Sunday, November 25, 2007 1:37:00 AM
Number of infected objects: 7

(someone is downloading some dangerous junk on this computer?)

I am guessing you should delete the stuff in red.

C:\Documents and Settings\User1\Desktop\Downloads\oneshot2.rar/OneShot.exe Infected: Trojan-PSW.Win32.IcqSmiley.c skipped
C:\Documents and Settings\User1\Desktop\Downloads\oneshot2.rar RAR: infected - 1 skipped

C:\Documents and Settings\User1\My Documents\My Received Files\AkumaEngine33.zip/AkumaEngine33/emptyprocess.exe Infected: Trojan.Win32.Shutdowner.ag skipped
C:\Documents and Settings\User1\My Documents\My Received Files\AkumaEngine33.zip ZIP: infected - 1 skipped

(in this case since you removed NAV, just delete the folder:

C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\00654582.bat Infected: Trojan.BAT.Regger.b skipped
C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\00654583.bat Infected: Trojan.BAT.Regger.b skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll <<< delete that file

Restart and run a new Kaspersky scan, please do not post a clean scan result, let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks

I deleted the several malicious files and rescanned my computer with Kaspersky. It detected no viruses or infected files and says the system is clean. Furthermore, the symptoms of excessive lag and constant freezing has stopped. Please tell me if there are any other scans or checks that i should do. Thanks a lot for your assistance!
