Bummed on Norton

The saga began when SpyBot reported smitfraud. I thought I removed it using SmitFraudFix. Now Spybot's reporting Virtumonde only and can't fix. (And all this while Norton was watching)

Please help :):eek:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Vundo is tough to remove, if you don't get it all it can morph and return and you have not gotten it all and it can be hidden. If you have either tool, delete them and download these new from the links I provide.

Before we start, see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< BADLY out of date and likely why you are infected, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

I am not a Norton fan, but if you don't keep programs updated, no antivirus program will stop these exploits.

Kaspersky:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< delete the contents.
http://ict.cas.psu.edu/training/howto/util/removespybot.htm#1

C:\Documents and Settings\Intuitive Design\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\ <<< delete Smitfraudfix.

1) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial

"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

2) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the Vundofix.txt, combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Hello and thank for the help so far. Since posting, my wife (who's computer this is) needed to do some work on it, so purchased and installed Kaspersky and removed Norton (Norton license was near to expiration anyway).

I've removed the older version of Java as suggested.

The spybot recovery folder is cleaned out.

Running the VundoFix reported nothing found to remove. ("Done searching for files. No infected files were found')

I ran ComboFix and the log is below:

There is also a file "ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt" that was created on the drive at c:\qoobox ... it seems to have additional information if you want that?

Thanks again - "Bummed"

There is also a file "ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt" that was created on the drive at c:\qoobox ... it seems to have additional information if you want that?No, that's our backup for an emergency, we will delete that before we scan with Kaspersky again.

Kaspersky Antivirus was a good choice, but we have issues with Symantec still being on the computer also:

Need to get the Symantec gone, if you need it, here is the Symantec tool:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box
above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the
next window opens, copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add
File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

Files to add:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oogppjyv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spgbxhoh.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xcaatpfx.dll

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the Vundofix report, a new HJT log and some feedback.

Thanks

I removed the old files from Norton... had to restart in safe mode to delete them.

Ran programs as you instructed.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback,

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 10:09:24 PM, on 11/28/2007

I missed >> http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/dlllibrary/mscoree/ that is not working right if at all, use HJT to remove it. If you use this, you should reinstall it.
O2 - BHO: Act.UI.InternetExplorer.Plugins.AttachFile.CAttachFile - {D5233FCD-D258-4903-89B8-FB1568E7413D} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
Symantec item, remove it with HJT also:
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/ser...00097.000001cf

The rest of the HJT log looks good:bigthumb:

Delete combofix, C:\qoobox\quarantine\ folder, Vundofix and the Vundofix backups folder, then run Kaspersky again, please use the settings I post. We will have some System Restore items to clean yet so expect those.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here. Let me know how the computer if running now also.

Thanks

Thanks for the help on all of this. I've removed the two lines as you suggested, using HJT. I also went to the link you provided and ran the free registry analysis. It corrected 15 items with many more showing (although the others won't correct without purchasing the software).

Looking over the HJT log, I still see some entries for Symentec (software which I've removed)?!

The system seems to be running better. No new pop-up windows of IE have occurred, but one notice, by the running Kaspersky, that Virtumondo was detected and that Kaspersky could not correct, but it could delete the file (don't remember the name, but it was a dll that started with the letter "a") which we told K. to delete.

I ran Kaspersky online again and here's the results:

Thanks for the feedback, you said this:
by the running Kaspersky, that Virtumondo was detected and that Kaspersky could not correct, but it could delete the file (don't remember the name, but it was a dll that started with the letter "a") which we told K. to delete. But the Kaspersky scan is clean?
