I downloaded the S&D and have read post that I could search on SB running on Vista. I've also tried all the suggestions to fix without any success. Facts: (1) SB was NOT on my Start menu, all I had was the icon on my desktop. I did right click and selected run the Admin. I also checked my status on my log in and I was the Admin. However after running SB and trying to fix, etc. I always get the notice to upgrade to Admin. When I tried to Undo, I got the same error msg. "Update to Admin."
I like what SB is claiming to do and want to contribute, but it's got to work first. I hope someone can tell me what to do besides right clicking and selecting Admin. It doesn't work. Why???

Hello,
Windows Vista might tell you that you are not being allowed to operate at the administration level of your computer.
You can solve this problem as follows:
Right-click the Spybot - Search & Destroy entry in your start menu,
instead of just left-clicking to start it.
Then, choose Run as administrator from the context menu.
You will find a screenshot of this problem in our FAQ:

Also note that it appears that User Account Control (UAC) must be enabled. See the following thread for a similar problem:

Greetings - I was setting two notebooks up at the same time and had this same issue but only on one of the notebooks.
Solution - The only difference between the machines was in the Explorer settings (Tools, Folder Options, View tab). I changed the 'problem' machine back to the defaults and SS&D worked just fine.
First, as stated elsewhere, right click on the icon and chose Run as admin OR my preference is to fix this permanently by right clicking on the icon and selecting Properties > select the Compatibility tab and check the box to 'Run this program as an administrator'... that will take care of it. -next
You may have changed a couple of default Vista settings. Change the following setting(s) back to default and SS&D should run fine.
* Do not show hidden files and folders
Show hidden files and folders
* Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
Apparently, Vista doesn't want S&D to mess with certain files. With the default settings in tact, this is not an issue.
I hope this helps.
Cheers from the US and many thanks to those who developed - and continue to develop - this great app.
