Hello,
I seem to have become infected the above mentioned malware. I have tried unsuccessfully to remove it using Spybot, Adaware and other tools including Vundofix and VirtumundoBegone, all to no avail. My apologies if this has complicated things - I hadn't yet read this forum.

At this stage the following situation exists: A Spybot scan reveals Virtumonde and Win32.BHO.df which I then fix. Subsequent scans reveal only Win32.BHO.df until the next reboot when both problems reappear.

I have followed your instructions with the following results:
-Kaspersky: Unable to run the online scan (couldn't seem to download the activeX control).
-Spybot in Safe Mode: removed Virtumonde (temporarily) but could not remove Win32.BHO.df not matter how many times I ran the scan. (I stopped after 4 scans)
-HijackThis: Here is the log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Do not run and post the Kaspersky scan results until I request them.

Hey Paul, it's a tough one to remove, i've removed many and it seems no two are the same. I can see evidence of Vundo and perhaps other malware. Please remove the tools you used and download these tools new from the links I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully.

1) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial

"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

2) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the Vundofix.txt, the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Thanks Paul, for returning your information. Read and follow the directions carefully.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box
above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the
next window opens, copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add
File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

Files to add:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\njxkqhgi.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ighqkxjn.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\njxkqhgi.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ydoryxjx.exe

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [b043dfff] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\njxkqhgi.dll",b
O20 - Winlogon Notify: efcdddc - efcdddc.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\njxkqhgi.dll <<< check to be sure that file is gone

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart your computer and post the Vundofix report and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks...Phil

Phil, many thanks for your support. Just a few notes that may or may not be of significance:
- After step 4, Vundofix prompted for a reboot which I did.
- I'm not sure if Vundofix produced a report at step 4 so I ran it again after step 7.
- After the final reboot (after step seven) I ran Spybot S&D again and it showed Virtumonde still present as three registry entries.

Hi Paul, this is a slightly modified version for this new varity of Vundo and I notice several folks have had an issue with the report. 6.6.1 put the .txt on the Desktop, 6.6.2 seems to put it on the C:\ if that helps.

After the final reboot (after step seven) I ran Spybot S&D again and it showed Virtumonde still present as three registry entries.Spybot can't remove this infection, but if it finds the registry entries it should be able to remove those. Make sure you have the newest version and that you are completely immunized and try again.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 5:09:06 PM, on 27/11/2007
This is a clean HJT log:bigthumb:

Give Kaspersky another try, it may work with Vundo out of the way. If it does not then update AVG Anti-Spyware and run a complete systen scan. Save the results and post it for me. Please use these instructions for Kaspersky.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

Phil, I have succeeded in running the Kaspersky scan but the log file is very long. I have therefore included it as an attachment (zip file). I hope this os OK

Phil, thanks very much for your excellent help.
Unfortunately, I have some bad news - I just ran a Spybot scan and it is still showing Virtumonde present in my system :sad:
I don't seem to have any symptoms e.g. popups, but it would appear something is still not right.

Sorry to be a pest.

Well Paul, there can be several reason for Spybot S&D flagging items it can not remove. One is that the program is not up to date and fully immunized. The other can be false positives, or other reason. The folks here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4 <<< Spybot forum
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=16 <<< false positives
will be glad to help with Spybot issues.

If you have a Kaspersky scan that is showing infected items, please post that here.

Thanks
