Hello,
It appears that my computer (Windows XP, SP2) is infected by Smitfraud-C. Before coming to here, I have tried multiple times to remove it, including:
disable System Restore (sorry);
Run Spybot-S&D repeatly (but failed to kill it).
After reading the instructions here, I've done:
run Kaspersky Online Scanner (but it cannot be launched in IE);
Reboot in safe mode;
fix all problems (red) found by Spybot-S&D (it was successful in safe mode).
However, when I booted to normal mode of XP, rerun Spybot-S&D, the Smitfraud-C came back again and cannot be removed by Spybot (v1.5 w/ current updates).
I would greatly appreciate your help on solving this very annoying issue!
Thanks so much,
Guang

Hello, and welcome to the forum.
My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
Step 1
Please enable System Restore:
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
On the System Restore tab, uncheck Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.
Click Apply.
When you see the confirmation message, click Yes.
Click OK.
Step 2
Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe) (by S!ri).
Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe. A screen will pop up. Select Option 1 (Search) by typing 1 and hit Enter. A text file will appear, which will list the infected files. Save it to a convenient location.
The log will also be saved here: C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
Step 3
Open HijackThis.
Click on the Config button.
Click on the Misc Tools button.
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
Click on the Save list... button and save the file to a convenient location. When you press Save, Notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Step 4
In your next reply, please post:
the SmitfraudFix report (C:\rapport.txt)
the Uninstall List (uninstall_list.txt)
a new HijackThis log

Hi :)
Step 1
Please download and install AVG Anti-Spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/).
After the installation, open AVG Anti-Spyware and do the following:
Under Status, click on Change state, next to Resident shield (this will change from Active to Inactive)
Under the Update tab, click on Start update.
Under Scanner, click on the Settings tab:
Under How to act?, click on Recommended actions, and select Quarantine.
Under Reports, select Do not automatically generate reports.
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not let it scan yet.
Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database here (http://downloads.ewido.net/avgas-signatures-full-current.exe). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed, then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database.
Step 2
Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1). Double-click on ATF-Cleaner.exe to start the program.
Under the Main tab, put a check next to Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button. (Note: if you remove cookies, automated login at forums and sites will be disabled. If you do not want this, uncheck Cookies)
If you use the Firefox browser:
Click on Firefox at the top and put a check next to Select All.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.
Click the Empty Selected button. (Note: if you remove cookies, automated login at forums and sites will be disabled. If you do not want this, uncheck Cookies)
If you use the Opera browser:
Click on Opera at the top and put a check next to Select All.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.
Click the Empty Selected button. (Note: if you remove cookies, automated login at forums and sites will be disabled. If you do not want this, uncheck Cookies)
Step 3
Print these instructions or copy them to Notepad and save it to your desktop, as you won't be able to access internet in Safe Mode.
Please reboot into Safe Mode. To do this, go to Start > Turn off Computer, and select Restart. Rapidly tap F8 just before Windows starts to load. In the menu that appears, select Safe Mode (Without Networking).
Step 4
Double-click on Smifraudfix.exe.
A screen will pop up. Select Option 2 (Clean) by typing 2 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Registry Cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry? Answer Yes by typing Y and press Enter in order to clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file; answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart Windows into Normal Mode.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please save it to a convenient location. The report can also be found at C:\rapport.txt.
Note: running Option 2 (Clean) on a computer that is not infected will remove your desktop background.
Step 5
Please open AVG Anti-Spyware.
Click on the Scan tab.
Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
After the scan, do the following:
Important: Don't click on the Save Scan Report button before you hit the Apply all Actions button.
Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1). If not, click on the link and select Quarantine from the popup menu (2).
At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button (3).
When done, click the Save Report (4) button, and save the file to your desktop.
Image: http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/4851/scanavgjk2.jpg
Reboot into Normal Mode.
Step 6
In your next reply, please post:
the SmitfraudFix report (C:\rapport.txt)
the AVG Anti-Spyware log

Dear Simon V.,
Thanks so much for your further help. Here is what I got--
Step 1~3: done successfully as instructed;
Step 4: what I noticed is that before getting into "Registry Cleaning", the tool reported to have some Microsfot VB runtime error. Meanwhile, Windows "Disk Cleanup" utility was open and running (unexpected and I manually closed it);
It did afterwards proceed and prompted to "Registry Cleaning" (which I did by typing Y);
After that, I am not sure if the tool checked wininet.dll, but I was not prompted to replace any infected file;
The tool did not restart my PC, instead, the rapport.txt file appeared onscreen in the end.
I manually restarted Windows into "Normal Mode" as instructed.
Step 5: still running (already ~ 2hr). I will post its report shortly.
Below are the new requested files.
***************
1. the SmitfraudFix report (C:\rapport.txt) --- NOTE: this file is rather large (712 Kb), containing a long "hosts" section which was from the MVPS HOSTS File applied a while back. (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm).
For posting purpose, I removed the middle part of the "hosts" section from MVPS HOSTS File.

Hi :)
That's looking a lot better.
Step 1
Click on Start, then Control Panel. Double click on Add or Remove Programs.
Please remove the following program(s):
Pure Codec
Step 2
Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [configmsi] cmd /c "rmdir /q C:\config.msi" (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [supportdir] cmd /c "rmdir /q /s "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\{BF90215F-2D7B-4C84-8A24-A03BC41B95DD}"" (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [configmsi] cmd /c "rmdir /q C:\config.msi" (User 'Default user')
Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.
Step 3
Your Java software is out of date. Follow these instructions to update it:
Go to Start and click on Control Panel, then double-click on Add or Remove Programs.
Search for previously installed versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment), and remove it. It should have this icon next to it: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.gif
Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Step 4
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner).
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner. On the welcome screen, click Accept.
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
Once the files have been downloaded click on Next.
Now click on Scan Settings.
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available, otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK.
Now under Select a Target to Scan:
Select My Computer.
The program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop.
Step 5
In your next reply, please post:
the Kaspersky Online Scan report
a new HijackThis log
How is your computer running now?

The computer seems running much better -- at least IE can run now. Please let me know what else I should do to complete the cleaning.
Thank you sooooo much!

Hi :)
Congratulations, your log looks clean. Please advise of any problems you are still experiencing, or follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean in the future:
You can now delete the following program(s):
SmitfraudFix.exe, SmitfraudFix folder
Disable and Enable System Restore - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
Step 1: Turn off System Restore:
On the desktop, right-click My Computer
Click Properties
Click the System Restore tab
Check Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then click OK
Step 2: Reboot your computer.
Step 3: Turn on System Restore:
On the desktop, right-click My Computer
Click Properties
Click the System Restore tab
Uncheck Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then click OK
Note: Only do this once, NOT on a regular basis!
Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab.
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is very imprtant that you update your anti-virus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti-virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that will come out.
Use a Firewall - Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. The Windows firewall isn't sufficient as it only monitors incoming connections.
Here are a few (free) firewalls, please download and install one of them:
ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=34std&ctry=&lang=en)
Kerio Personall Firewall (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall/)
Comodo Free Firewall (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ (http://update.microsoft.com/) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Ad-Aware - Download and install Ad-Aware. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=13)
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Stand Up and Be Counted! (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) - Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints: Malware Complaints. You have to be registered to post. After registering just find your country room and register your complaint. The infection you had was Smitfraud.
