Confusing CWShredder results

I have a Fujitsu Siemens laptop running Vista Home Premium. The default browser is Firefox and Norton Internet Security is used for anti-virus and firewall. Spybot S and D and AdAware 2007 are kept updated and used regularly. SUPERAntiSpyware has also recently been installed and used. The results of all Norton runs are free of viruses. The anti-spyware results produce either “normal” results, e.g. tracking cookies, or nothing. Because IE7 is used by Windows Update I have also installed CWShredder but the results from this are confusing. If I run it as administrator, no traces of CWShredder are found. If, however, I run it just as a user, it reports that CWS.HiddenDll and CWS.Jksearch have been removed. However, if I then immediately run the program again as a user it again reports that these two items have been removed. Today, full system runs for Norton Antivirus and all the anti-spyware software, again full system where this is an option, have been OK, but CWShredder has been inconsistent as usual.

I run Norton Security Inspector and, apparently quite randomly, it shows Windows Hosts as being changed and this I then fix. A report run of CWShredder when this happens lists dozens of websites under Hosts, most/all apparently of a doubtful nature, before fixing with Norton.

I've run HiJackThis and the report is shown below. Attempts to run Kapsersky online scan have failed because Norton says that ActiveX controls cannot be downloaded because of the security settings used. However, the same thing happens after altering the security settings in line with Norton's recommendations to allow ActiveX to be downloaded.

So the questions are: Is CWShredder giving false positives when run by me as a user, or is it infected? How and why do Windows Hosts keep changing, or is this a false positive from Norton Security Inspector?

Help and advice would be much appreciated.

Hello.

I haven't seen CWS in a long time and I doubt Trend Micro™ has either as apprantly they haven't updated CWShredder™ since November 2005. ;)

Supported Operating Systems
Microsoft™ Windows™ XP/2000/Me/98 SE

I would remove it, there is no need to load up Vista with such programs anyway. Did Vista give any warnings about compatibility or have you disabled UAC? (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/details/useraccountcontrol.mspx)

Make sure if you have a third party firewall enabled, that Vista's native firewall is turned off.

In general you may find your laptop produces a sluggish performance, as it has so many security programs installed doing the same job, especially as Norton is known for being a resource hog. Inquiries as to Norton alerts and possible false positives would be best directed to Symantec.

Best wishes. :)
