So I've had an issue with popups on my machine here for some time now, and I can't seem to get rid of the lot of them no matter what I do. I've run Spybot multiple times, and I'm told that I get "Command Service" errors that can't be removed. I've heard that these can actually just be a false positive, so I'm not sure if they're the problem or not.
I've run startup scans with Avast! multiple times as well and it always finds infected files, but the popups are persistent.
Also, I don't seem to be able to boot into Safe Mode at all to try and run S&D. Whenever I try to boot into Safe Mode, it lets me choose safe mode, then asks me which partition I want to boot from. There's only ever one, and it reads as "/NoExecute=OptIn". If I choose it, I get a black screen with one line of text at the top that just sits there and reads: "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe".
I'm totally stuck here and I'm at my wits end. You guys seem to be the most savvy people I've ever come across when it comes to getting this stuff resolved. Please help!
I ran Hijack This, and here's my log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Indeed it is, you have a Vundo infection which can be very hard to remove. This will take some time and unless you are patient, understand how to follow directions and are comfortable working on your computer, you may want to seek local professional help. If you wish to proceed, read and follow the directions carefully.
If you decide to proceed, the junk will download more so stay offline except when you are troubleshooting.
It got tougher when you missed the instruction pinned to the top of the forum and posted above, please read and follow those directions.
1) Do not run and post a Kaspersky scan now, I will let you know when I need it.
2) Post the correct HJT log, version 2.0.2 and I will respond as soon as possible after you post.
Thanks
phiregsei

I'm really very sorry that I didn't follow the posting guidelines properly. I should have been more careful in my reading of them.
Anyway, I am very comfortable working on the computer in any event, and would very much like to proceed with the removal of this bug. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get to the infected machine again until Sunday, I don't think. If I can get to it sooner, I'll post the correct HijackThis log.
Again, my apologies for my sloppy post, and thanks for your help!

All right! Well that all seemed to go off without a hitch. Thanks again for your help. I was wondering, is my inability to boot into SafeMode indicative of the infection, or is that just some other issue with the computer that I'll have to work out? Also, just out of curiosity, how were you able to diagnose the problem so quickly? I understand that there are flags to keep an eye out for, but I was just wondering what they were.
Anyway, here are the log files:

This is a very nasty infection and we have just gotten started, be patient.
I was wondering, is my inability to boot into SafeMode indicative of the infection, or is that just some other issue with the computer that I'll have to work out?There is usually an indication when this problem exists in the Combofix log, but it was not present, we may have to troubleshoot this as a another issue?
I have seen a load of this infection, here is some information for you:
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:

The tools we ran did a great job, first this program: C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe
Obsolete, uninstall it in Add Remove programs. This became Windows Defender a year or so ago.
You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\
Uninstall one of these before you post the next HJT log.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart and post a new HJT log and some feedback.

Ok so I've done the whole gamut of things on your last post.
I uninstalled the Microsoft Antispyware program without a hitch.
I've also uninstalled Norton which was expired anyway, and am working just with Avast! now. I did a thorough scan of my machine after the uninstallation, and it encountered a few files that it could not remove or move. Here are the file pathnames with Avast!'s diagnosis of each infection:
C:\Twilight Zone\New Folder\ak162.exe\{app}\AceZip_TdOm3flM.exe\[UPX]\[Embedded#03010] Infection: Win32:Ad-Agent [Adw]
*Could not move or delete file
C:\Twilight Zone\New Folder\dfk185.exe\{app}\AceZip_TdOm3flM.exe\[UPX]\[Embedded#03010] Infection: Win32:Ad-Agent [Adw]
*Could not move or delete file
C:\Twilight Zone\New Folder\twisterfree.exe\{app}\Partner\installer_NPS.exe Infection: Win32:Trojan-gen {VC}
*Could not move or delete file
C:\Twilight Zone\New Folder\twisterfree.exe\{app}\Partner\BSaveInstWm.exe\Save.exe Infection: Win32:Adware-gen [Adw]
*Could not move or delete file
C:\Twilight Zone\New Folder\twisterfree.exe\{app}\Partner\BSaveInstWm.exe\SaveUninst.exe Infection: Win32:Spyware-gen [Trj}
*Could not move or delete file
I ran HiJackThis and Fixed the three files you specified, then ran the ATF cleaner, and there were no problems.
I then rebooted, and ran HJT to get this log:

I may not be able to do a next step until tomorrow, but I'll try to get as much done as possible while I have access to the machine today. Thanks again for your help! I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the feedback, I have no idea what Avast is locating, I normally wait for Kaspersky to show me the suff. You don't know what that is?
C:\Twilight Zone\ <<< why not just delete the folder? Do it in safe mode if you need to.
From the looks of the file paths, all the junk in in that Twilight Zone folder.
You can wait until we see what Kaspersky finds if you wish.

You are still running Symantec in your services?
O23 - Service: pcAnywhere Host Service (awhost32) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere\awhost32.exe

Let's see what Kaspersky locates:
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Then post it here.
Thanks

Good Morning. Sorry I had to leave last night and I couldn't proceed. As to the "Twilight Zone" folder, I'm not sure whose that is, a few different people use this computer, so I'd rather not wipe its slate clean until I can ask around a bit, though it does seem to be a good idea.
As far as the Symantec stuff goes, I think that the PCAnywhere piece is for a different program on the machine, so I have to leave that on here. The other one, the WMI thing, I got rid of because all it was for was coordinating Norton with Windows Internet Security. Now that I have uninstalled Norton, it's obsolete. I think that all of the actual Norton functionality is removed, even if there is still a Symantec product on there, because Avast! is no longer warning me that it's detected another security system, and appears to be running at full tilt.
I couldn't get Kapersky to run for some reason. The big "Scan Now" button doesn't do anything at all. No windows open, no notifications that something has been blocked, nothing. The link to start the scan was some Javascript, so I turned off Avast!'s Script Blocker for a moment and tried to get it to run, but still nothing happened. I thought maybe pausing all of the Avast! blockers for a few moments might remedy the situation, but still nothing happened.
Do I need a new version of Java or something? I'm not sure if that machine has ever had Java installed on it, much less updated. I've also read that not updating Java is a great way to leave your computer open to infection right?
I'm not going to take any more steps until I hear from you, pskelley, just because I don't want to make the situation worse somehow. Thanks again for your help, and I'll be ready to go with a next step as soon as I hear from you.

Thanks for the feedback, you'll have to make the call about what Avast found, looks like adware to me. I would not have it on my computers, but you might.
Since you can't run Kaspersky, You have HouseCall installed, give it a run, then update Avast and do a system scan with it. Unless you have quesions, you are good to go.

Yeah, I went ahead and got rid of that whole Twilight Zone area. It was filled with junk after all.
So, oddly enough, I couldn't get HouseCall to run either. I looked for it on my computer, but couldn't find it installed anywhere. I then went to the HouseCall site on TrendMicro, and I couldn't run their online scan either. The same thing happened as with Kaspersky. Do you think this might be indicative of a larger problem?
Thankfully, I can now boot into SafeMode again, but now the computer seems to have lost the ability to search itself with Windows. When I try to open "Search" from the Start Menu, I get a blank Explorer window.
Now I know that this doesn't necessarily fall under the heading of Network Safety, and, as such, isn't really your problem, but I was hoping you might just have some advice?
Thanks again for all of your help. I'm going to run Avast! in SafeMode right now and make sure the machine is clean. I really appreciate all you've done. Keep up the fantastic work!

Here's the link to the DPF for HouseCall, you also have Panda Installed?

Looks like Microsoft Java is installed, post an uninstall list and I will look:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)
I don't know why they won't run, probably something to do with how you have your IE settings in ActiveX, you are using Internet Explorer to download them...correct?
Review the information I posted links to, all of that is covered by one or more of those experts.
Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately, I have to leave for the remainder of the day, and Avast! hasn't finished its scan yet. The next time I can get to the computer in question, I'll double check all of that stuff. Again, you've done me a great favor, and thanks for all your time and hard work.
