Hi all,

This past week had some suspicious activity. Found my Norton AntiVirus shut off for no reason one day while the kids were online. So I proceeded to scan the life out of my computer. I ran Norton - found nothing. Ran Spybot - nothing but a few cookies. Ran AVG - nothing but a few cookies. Ran a HijackThis log and compared it to a prior one and nothing looked ununsual. The only unusual activity I had was some returned email delivery to some addresses I had never seen before using my email in the Return-Path (not actually from mine just in the return path).

Anyway, that ceased and I thought everything was fine.

Today, the browser suddenly shut down and I got a small window saying the following:

The page at hXXp://scanner2.malware-scan.com says:
NOTICE: If your computer has been running slower than normal, it may be infected with Viruses, Adware or Spyware. MalwareAlarm will perform a quick and completely FREE scan of your system for malicious programs. Download MalwareAlarm for FREE now!

with the buttons "OK" and "Cancel"

INSTEAD of clicking either of those I clicked the "x" in the upper right hand corner to close the window and then it started to scan my computer anyway!

I closed down the browser (Firefox).

I quickly downloaded Smitfraudfix (just in case I was unable to get on later)

I changed the name of my HijackThis.exe and renamed it HijackThisdisq.exe (standing for HijackThis in disquise) and got the following scan:

I disquised it because I had quickly searched out MalwareAlarm and saw that is sometimes didn't show up on the usual HJT logs.

Anyway, that's it. Oh, and when I went to check my Norton Internet Security, it was not working and I had to restart my computer in order to get it to work again.

Fortunately, I have internet monitoring software (self-installed called SpectorSoft - it's legit) which takes 30 second screenshots so I was able to see exactly what happened here. That is what the one SSODL file is that's showing in the HJT log.

Okay so I have not run the Smitfraud even though I figure that's probably what I need to do. I just figured I'd run this by you folks since you are the experts, and see what you thought.

Many thanks in advance.

hi,

looks like you have been here before. from what you have said it does sound like the popular smitfraud trojan. if you have a copy of smitfraudfix delete it because it gets updated. download the newest version and post the log:

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/smitfraudfix.php

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: c:\rapport.txt

please post the smitfraudfix report in next reply.

Hello and thank you for helping me.

I downloaded the Smitfraudfix that you suggested and ran it with the selection of #1Search.

I was a little surprised that the report was generated in a matter of seconds.....not nearly as long as it takes on "clean" mode.

Here is the report:

SmitFraudFix v2.259

hi Cindylu,

smitfraud log looks ok, lets see what combofix can dig up:

Download combofix from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop:

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

hi,

thanks for the info. combo log looks ok except for one item; the winlogon .dll

lets try vundofix first:

download and run vundofix.exe:

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Hi,

Is this the winlogon file you were referring to?

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\wvuss]
C:\WINNT\system32\wvuss.dll

If so, I know what that is.........or was. It was from a time before when I had Vundo a couple of years ago and it was removed and all that was left of it was that file in the System 32 folder which I then manually removed. The only thing left is the registry entry which I was never able to delete using HJT or anything else. It doesn't seem to cause a problem however since the file it's trying to access was removed along with the rest of the stuff vundo had installed back then.

When I ran the VundoFix program today it scanned my laptop but then said that it did not find any infected files.

Could it be possible that a page on a website could be causing the pop-up? Both times it popped up was while my daughter was playing a game on Neopets. The game refreshes the screen a lot. Neopets itself is not a bad site but it does have a lot of ads and I seem to get tracing cookies from fastclick and doubleclick from them.....but never anything that can't be gotten rid of easily. And never a pop-up like that.

Anyway, here is my latest HJT log:

hi Cindylu,

yes thats the one i was referring to. if its been there a couple of years i wouldnt worry about it. probably just a harmless registry leftover.

a page on a website could be causing the pop-up
could be possible. malware would be producing popups either at any webpage and possibly even when your not online. iam really not seeing much of anything in any of the logs as far as malware goes.

atfcleaner is a handy tool for easily keeping cookies and temp files cleaned up:

I do use ATF cleaner on a regular basis. It is a wonderful tool.

Are there any other scans I can run to be sure I am clean? I know nothing is showing up but it is just a bit alarming the way this "whatever it is" closes down my browser window and then automatically begins a scan when I try to "x" out of the pop-up.

I guess the only other thing I could do would be to wait and see if it happens again and then run a HJT log while the pop-up is occurring. Would that be more likely to show something?

Just wondering what else I can do. I still feel a bit uncomfortable about whether or not something could be lurking...........but like you said, nothing is showing up other than the pop-up.

hi,

there are many malicious website that will fake a scan in hopes you download and buy there worthless software.

look here at contravirus download (smitfraud)which is typical of one:

http://www.virusvault.us/firewall%20videos.htm
-----------------------------

other scans I can run to be sure I am clean

try this one:
ESET online scanner:

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

uses Internet Explorer only
check "YES" to accept terms
click start button
allow the ActiveX component to install
click the start button. the Scanner will update.
check both "Remove found threats" and "Scan unwanted applications"
click scan
when done you can find the scan log at:C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
please copy/paste that log in next reply.

hi,

that online scan looks ok this:Win32/Adware.WBug.A application

is weatherbug:

which i think is, or use to be bundled with AOL/AIM. its one of those "grey" applications is it really malware? depends on who you ask there was alot of debate about it at one time.

see these links about it: looks like you may not even have it installed anymore. a old AOL95? installation .exe

this is your system restore points:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore

we can clean those out and make anew one. looks good from this end, if all is good on your end, to make new restore points:

One of the features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is agood idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot
