View Full Version : Not Sure I'm Clean Yet

I still hear my hard drive being too active, and my system too slow. It just feels wrong.

I followed the before you post directions: Kaspersky first (log below), then Spybot until I was clean, then Hijack This (log below).

Before doing this, I did find some nasties, and one bad one (zlob.zipcodec).

Kaspersky only seems to find 2 things: 1) suspicious stuff in my UBCD installers, and 2) a virus in my Eudora Trash file (which seems like it should be pretty well quarantined to me.

I have many of these, but they are all fundamentally the same so I deleted them from this log.

Hi

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you
will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make
sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish. The fix will
begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer;
please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is
normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log (taken in normal mode), along with the contents of
the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

PS. Do you have McAfee firewall active along with ZoneAlarm? It's not recommended to have two or more software firewalls active in same system.

I have some short questions/clarifications first. FixWareout and HijackThis went exactly according to plan - both logs are posted after these questions.

1) I don't know if I have a McAfee Firewall in addition to Zone Alarm. Certainly not intentionally. Definitely not if it is a separate program. If it is a setting inside McAfee, then I might have missed it. Please advise.

2) I did get a message from FixWareOut that my Recycle Bin is corrupted. Should I delete it? If so, can I try to undelete a couple files before I do, or should I let them go as potential hazards? Is this account specific, or should I delete it under all user accounts?

3) I didn't understand the comment "I don't help with logs thru PM. If you have problems create a thread in the forum". Please advise.

4) This is dumb. Ever since I installed Spybot, the Spybot folder opens on startup. It is not in any of my startup folders, and StartUpCop doesn't show it. Is there a registry key I need to change? Very weird ...

5) I'm assuming I'm supposed to run FixWareOut and HijackThis from an administrators account. These logs were produced this way.

FixWareOut Log
(the Twain32 item in here is an old parallel port scanner)
(the file rbcs.exe does not seem to be on my hard drive in the specified location - the folder is for a registry compressor, but is now empty)

1) I don't know if I have a McAfee Firewall in addition to Zone Alarm. Certainly not intentionally. Definitely not if it is a separate program. If it is a setting inside McAfee, then I might have missed it. Please advise.
I've never used McAfee products so can't say if firewall is active. Check if this (http://www.vcn.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=334) helps.

2) I did get a message from FixWareOut that my Recycle Bin is corrupted. Should I delete it? If so, can I try to undelete a couple files before I do, or should I let them go as potential hazards? Is this account specific, or should I delete it under all user accounts?
Safest alternative is clear recycler bin under all user accounts.

3) I didn't understand the comment "I don't help with logs thru PM. If you have problems create a thread in the forum". Please advise.
Some people send private messages with hijackthis log included. If person needs help she/he should create a new topic in the forum (just like you did).

4) This is dumb. Ever since I installed Spybot, the Spybot folder opens on startup. It is not in any of my startup folders, and StartUpCop doesn't show it. Is there a registry key I need to change? Very weird ...
I don't know what's causing that. You can try to reinstall it or ask at Spybot-S&D Support (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4) when we've finished here.

5) I'm assuming I'm supposed to run FixWareOut and HijackThis from an administrators account. These logs were produced this way.
Yes, that's correct.

Start hjt, do a system scan, check:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Close browsers & other windows. Click 'fix checked'.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category
View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise
double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default
connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left
click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says
Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter

* Go here (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner) to run an online scanner from ESET.
Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checkmarked.
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic, along with a new HijackThis log & a description of any remaining problems

Thanks for the answers to the 5 short questions.

One clarification: should emptying my Recycle Bins under each user, and rebooting afterwards take care of the corruption in my Recycle Bin?

With respect to McAfee Firewall, that link did help, and it seems like all I've ever had is Zone Alarm.

I did the correction using HijackThis you recommended. No problems - can I get a short explanation of why we did this?

The directions were slighly off for resetting DNS servers, but I took care of that. Did the flush. This I understand. Can I now reset TCP/IP to the earlier settings?

Did the ESET run. I'm troubled.

The first time I ran it I was not prepared for how long it would take. I accidentally killed it looking at the FAQ. I was too dumb to save the log from this partial run - but the screen said that 3 threats had been found.

In the FAQ it said to turn off on-access virus checking since that can slow down ESET. So I turned off McAfee. I also remembered to change the security settings on a folder that the administrator doesn't have access to. At that time I also retrieved a needed file from the (corrupted) Recycle Bin, and then emptied it. (I figured that if that file was out in the open on my desktop that I'd be reasonably OK.)

Then I reran ESET and got a clean log (posted below). I am wondering if I screwed this up somehow, since those 3 threats disappeared.

Lastly, my clueless opinion is that I might be clean this time around. If so, can any of the the things you recomended fixing or changing explain why my hard drive has sounded so busy?

One clarification: should emptying my Recycle Bins under each user, and rebooting afterwards take care of the corruption in my Recycle Bin?
Please check here (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/561974.html).

I did the correction using HijackThis you recommended. No problems - can I get a short explanation of why we did this?
Cause that entry is not needed. :) More info about it here (The directions were slighly off for resetting DNS servers, but I took care of that. Did the flush. This I understand. Can I now reset TCP/IP to the earlier settings?[/quote]
Yes, you can restore the settings. So these were set by yourself: 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220? Those are sometimes a sign of wareout and that's why I wanted you to run fixwareout earlier. :)

Then I reran ESET and got a clean log (posted below). I am wondering if I screwed this up somehow, since those 3 threats disappeared.
Those 3 threats were deleted when you first ran the scanner.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

[u]Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Have you defragged hard drives lately? If not then it would be recommended. Check also this (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html) about slow computers.
