View Full Version : Kill.AV - Help!

The Squap!
2007-12-03, 15:59
Help! I have Kill.AV trojan with the associated annoying pop-up "Windows Security Alert - Warning! Potential Spyware Operation! Your computer is making unauthorized copies of your system ..... Click YES to download spyware remover ..."

I also have had the seemingly typical problem of being locked out of Control Panel, 'My Computer - Add or remove programs' ... and even the computer clock; Locked from access to any Symantec.com pages for my Norton 360 updates; and locked from Windows Update.

Previously my Norton consistently found trojan Kill.AV, but told me I needed a manual fix, then told me it was all OK. I also ran Spyhunter and it found various spyware. From then my computer would run without popups, but would still not allow access to Control Panel etc. The pop-up would be reactivated upon re-boot.

Thinking I would save you guys some time I tried to fix it all permanently following the 'Annie G' thread on this site and only started getting results from page 4 After running Dr Web CureIT, doing the ERUNT thing, and running F-Secure Online Scanner:

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=18572&page=4:

My Control Panel returned and all seemed well. Except I did notice that my internet explorer home page was set to google.com but consistently redirected to www.msn.com

All was good untill I re-booted. Then everything came back ... the pop-up and the lock outs.

As instructed by tashi "Before You Post" I have run Kaspersky Online Scanner and attach a log, then Spybot. My Control Panel is once again back, but I think it will probably all disappear again upon re-boot. The annoying pop up did not go away. I'll now run HJT and attach a log.

First here's the Kaspersky from a few days ago:

Here's the HJT File. Something else I did not mention: After following the 'Annie G' thread, one thing was fixed permanently: Access to symantec and the Norton Updates was consistently restored even after re-boot.

Many thanks in advance. :):snorkle:

Is this odd?

So that I can continue to use my computer without harassment from that pop up, I ran Spybot today. It took out loads of stuff including many things in SpyHunter, a program I paid for to try to get rid of the trojan Kill.AV (which it could not).

After checking the boxes and fixing, I was allowed (amongst other things) to get back to my clock/calendar (... after flashing an initial message to tell me the administrator settings do not allow it). The Control Panel, however, was not visible. "View Systems" and "Add/Remove Programs" were also locked with the same administrator access message.

When I ran Spybot again it had a single box with SpyHunter which I checked and fixed. The Control Panel and all access is now back. SpyHunter has gone ... completely. Erased.

Has this thing infected the SpyHunter program? If so should I ignore re-loading SpyHunter?

Thanks.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. Also, helpers may think you are already being assisted because of the post count. The same applies to bumping, please don't.
These fixes are tailored to individual infections which are rarely alike. Unless you are positive you know what you are doing, my suggestion is to wait for a helper.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, read and follow these directions carefully.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Just reporting a couple of things - I don't know if they are important:

During startup in safe mode I had a pop-up:

"Windows cannot find c:windows\system32\proper.exe ... etc ... make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again"

I hit the 'OK' box and it went away.

During deletion in SmitF, and before the "Do you want to clean registry prompt" I had a pop-up:

"Disk Cleanup - calculating how much space you will be able to free in (c:)"

I hit the 'cancel' box and it went away.

Herewith the logs:

Thanks for the feedback, that item was part of the malware:
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\proper.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/proper.exe-20479.html
It should be gone now.

When Smitfraudfix is running you should OK all prompts, that may be why your Hosts files looks strange. If you did not set it like that, then we will reset it to the original and I suggest you install a good hosts files like this one:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm When we finish.

Let's proceed like this:

1) If you did not set the hosts files like that, then do this:
Download the HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager.
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip
Unzip HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager
Run HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
Click on "File Handling".
Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
Click OK on the Confirmation box.
Click on "Make Read Only?"
Click the X to exit the program.
Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://hpen.oberon-media.com/online/...ploader_v5.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log and some feedback.

Thanks

Do you own this program?
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Anti Trojan Elite] C:\Program Files\Anti Trojan Elite\TJEnder.exe :NO?? If now I would consider uninstall it.

Thanks again. :D:

1/ I ran HostsXpert 4.2 and did as you instructed because ... I don't actually know what a Host File is, so unless there was something in the Annie G thread that I followed before to make that happen, I guess it must be part of the problem? :red:

2/ That thing in the log "Trojan Elite" was a free program I downloaded following a Google search to fix my original "Trojan KillAV" problem. (after paying for SpyHunter ... which also did not help).

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Anti Trojan Elite] C:\Program Files\Anti Trojan Elite\TJEnder.exe

The graphics and set up looked like a fake so I uninstalled it. I was locked out of my control panel at that time, so I am not certain how I uninstalled it. Maybe as soon as I gained access to the Control Panel after running Dr Web CureIt from the Annie G thread. Not sure.

However - I am suprised to see it on the log. It does NOT appear when I now look at the list under Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs.

How shall I kill it?

Herewith the latest HJT after running ATF Cleaner:

Thanks for the feedback and your honesty, first this information.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial51.html

(you may need to enabled all files and folders to see the folder?)
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Anti Trojan Elite] C:\Program Files\Anti Trojan Elite\TJEnder.exe :NO

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Anti Trojan Elite\ <<< delete that folder if there.

Since Kaspersky found nothing in the scan, let's use this program: AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
Update it and then run a complete system scan, save the scan report and post it. How is your computer running?

Thanks

Hi again.

I ran the HJT fix, and thanks for the advice on locating the Trojan Elite file. That is now deleted along with its contents.

I am currently scanning with the updated AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 as instructed. That will probably take some time. I'll post the log as soon as I have it.

Meanwhile -

My computer is actually running very well. I ran Spybot a few days ago in preparation for my first post, I was wary of re-booting because that used to make the pop-up return, and often locked me out of Control Panel functions. So I left my laptop on over the weekend. I expected the pop-up to come back when I re-booted after running SmitF in safe mode earlier, but it did not. And no lock outs. :D:

The only problem right now is this -

My Internet Explorer is set to Google.com, but when I load it it flashes this in the http:// box:

http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&clcid=0x409&pver=6.0&ar=home

It then settles at msn.com. (BTW I had to capture the line above to paste it here by doing a very speedy copy ... I'm sure there's a better way of doing that ... but it was a good game to kill the time during this scan.) :alien:

I remember that before I followed the 'Annie G' thread Google was also completely hijacked, with all Google links directed to another search page. That problem was fixed somewhere along the way.

Looks like I have another hour or so to go on this scan. I'll propbably be off line for a while as I change locations.

Many thanks again. :bigthumb:

You DNS may be hijacked but I rarely see it highjacked from Google to MSN (MSN would like that) See what's going on:

See if this information helps:

If not, let me know and we will try other things.

Thanks

Thanks for the interesting links. I can see why they do all this ... redirecting searches to gain hits must be big bucks for someone. But surely the people who pay for the hits (advertisers?) should be more careful about who they pay and what they are paying for ... then maybe this will stop? :2thumb:

On the IE home page I have tried re-setting the page to other things, including blank page, but it keeps getting directed. This is not a big deal ... it just concerns me that it might be doing more than just redirecting. :trample:

In case you are not aware, it is all about the $$$ and advertisers seem to be ready to quickly jump into bed with organized crime:

Let's look for the worse first:

Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) in the forum please.

Thanks

I noticed that the IE still goes to msn on launch.Did you follow the instructions to reset your homepage here:
To set your favorite destination as your home page
1. Click Tools and then select Internet Options from the drop down menu
2. Click the General tab (usually the default display).
3. Type in the page you wish to make your home. If the webpage that you are currently viewing will be your new home page, click on Use Current.

Tip: By selecting Use Blanks, whenever the browser i opened, a clean, white blank page appears. What's the advantage of using a blank page? You will save time during the boot process. What's the disadvantage? Your home page won't have much information.

If you did, as you can see Fixwareout flushed the DNS Cache

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache

You might want to ask Your ISP to take a look at your settings. Make them aware you were infected, tell them what is happening. They may know something about returning you to default I am not aware of for their connection.

You can delete the tools we downloaded for this repair.

Thanks

Thanks again.

Yes I noticed the line about successful flushing. But IE still comes back as msn.com after that redirection line flashes up.

Under 'Tools' - 'Internet Options' I have tried using other things like 'Use blank' (which it is set to now); and going to Google to set 'Use current'. It displays what I want in the Home page box but still goes to msn.com when I open IE.

Incidentally under 'Use default' that redirection line appears in the Home page box.

Also, when I bought this computer, A Compaq Presario laptop, upon opening IE it always went to the HP games page (trying to sell the products). I could also not get rid of that by changing to 'Use blank' or 'Use current'. After an annoying length of time (maybe a month ... and just as I was about to call Compaq/HP) it stopped redirecting. Looks like Compaq might be guilty of Malwareing their own products?

Since this is a laptop and I log on in different locations with different ISPs, and the same thing happens with IE, I am sure it has nothing to do with the ISP.

Anyway, thank very much to you guys for all the help.

One last question:

Should I reload that Spyhunter program by Enigma software that I bought on line (it looks legitimate) ... the one that looks for spyware/adware, or is it better to just stay now with Spybot? Spybot apparently took Spyhunter out ... maybe because Spyhunter had become infected ... if that's possible?

As you can see in my previous post below:

Thanks.

I will not comment on products from Enigma beyond saying I will never use one of their products. Seems like a member of the malware community makes a negative comment, they run for their lawyers. Do a little Googling, plenty of information out there. See this link:

Thanks so much for the help and these links. Very interesting reading!

:banana::banana::banana:

I've awarded myself 3 dancing bananas for being such a sucker paying for software by Enigma.

I will be making a donation and sending your info links to friends. This malware thing seems to be getting out of control.

Will I be any better off upgrading to Vista?

(By the way, if you actually do live in Clearwater, that's where my mother lives ... near Clearwater Exec Airpark off Hercules.)
