Greetings--My old Gateway has gone flaky. It's sluggish, freezes, crashes. Many blue screens: 'system is busy or has become unstable', 'system is busy waiting for the close program dialog', exception errors etc. Many times it takes 3 or more tries to get it to boot, usually with a stop in Safe Mode. The hard drive chatters mindlessly. Process Explorer often shows cpu usage above 95%. Before I put it all down to senility, I thought you kind folk might see if there in anything untoward going on. The machine is after all almost 8 years old. That must be something like 2 or 3 generations in people years!

I run an AVG scan every day and regularly run Spybot S&D, Adaware, Cwshredder, Gzapper and CCleaner. The Kaspersky online scan would not run. Below is my log.

Thanks in advance.

Chris

hi,

thats the entire hjt log? as far as malware goes, i dont see anything in the log. you also run spybot, ad aware and your AV. these would be the first clue for any malware.

A machine thats 8 years old would surely benefit from a reformat/ reinstall of windows. windows can get gunked up over time, 8 years is long. However, windows no longer supports W98, iam thinking about getting it updated after a reinstall. have you visited windows update lately? maybe you could get all the last updates that came out there, not sure, or somewhere else.

your OS, because ms dosnt support it anymore could also be vulnerable to any zero day exploits. new vulnerabilites to which there are no "patches/updates".

I reinstalled Windows, there were of course a few hurdles along the way, but the old machine seems young again. It has been up for hours now, longer than it has in many weeks. I've tried many restarts, and none have hung or detoured me through Safe Mode.

I suppose most would just tell me to get a new box, but this one still does everything I need it to do. I've got a laptop running XP for anything the Gateway can't do.

Again, thanks.

hi Chris,

ok good. must make a world of difference. I agree, if it does what you need it to, why get another one? dont forget to visit windows updates to get "patched" if its still possible with W98, if not can probably find the updates else where.
