Hi Simon,

Welcome to the forum :)

Before I write up the fixes you need, could you produce one other log for me please and post it back here.

Open HijackThis and instead of Scan, please choose *Open Misc. Tools Section*
Choose *Open Uninstall Manager* button

This will create a list. Press the *save list* button on the right. This will create a text file call uninstall_list. Please copy the contents of that list and post it back here please :)

Thanks :)

Open HijackThis and do a *scan only*. When it finishes, checkmark these entries in the list, then press the *fix checked* button:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = about:blank

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = about:blank

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Hot_Tarts_Au] C:\Program Files\Video1\Dialers\Hot_Tarts_Au\Hot_Tarts_Au.exe /dontdial

O19 - User stylesheet: (file missing)

On that Hot Tarts item, it may have just been a leftover in the registry, as the scanners you have used probably already targeted that pest and may have removed the files already

You should check for this folder on your system, and if found, delete it and it's contents
C:\Program Files\Video1 <--delete folder, if found

Additional removal considerations here under Manual Removal section at the bottom of th page:
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/Wink.html

You had this variant:
Wink/HotTarts: another dialer.

When done, please reboot your computer, scan again and post a fresh HijackThis log please.

Hi
Thanks heaps !

Below is latest HJ T Scan (after reboot) as requested

Re You should check for this folder on your system, and if found, delete it and it's contents
C:\Program Files\Video1 <--delete folder, if found

... I did not find folder Video1

Re Additional removal considerations here under Manual Removal section at the bottom of th page:
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/Wink.html

...I did not find any of the entries in regedit for manual removal and no entry in Add/Remove Programs

An additional question if I may ... When I get a Spybot SD window saying a change has been made in the system ... the window does not fully load ... by that I mean the button at the bottom right does not fully form and if I attempt to "click" on it all it seems to do is put a tick in the box on left bottom corner " 'Do you want to remember change ' ... Have I got a faulty copy and or should I either reinstall or download another copy ? ...I hope that's not too confusing !

Thanks again :bigthumb:
Simon

An additional question if I may ... When I get a Spybot SD window saying a change has been made in the system ... the window does not fully load ... by that I mean the button at the bottom right does not fully form and if I attempt to "click" on it all it seems to do is put a tick in the box on left bottom corner " 'Do you want to remember change ' ... Have I got a faulty copy and or should I either reinstall or download another copy ? ...I hope that's not too confusing !
That is a bug in Spybot...the workaround is posted here:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=122

You need to do those steps again with HijackThis and if any other program, including Spybot, asks about changes, please choose to *allow* changes. We are making these changes for the fix to your system and you need to allow them.

Hi

I have done as requested ... installed ResHacker and followed instructions for fix ... I have "fix checked" items in HJ T scan and posted below is latest scan ...Also had another look for folder Video1 and re checked regedit for the other things ... Not a sign of them ...

NB ... I can now "allow" changes ! ... so the ResHacker has fixed problem I assume !(?)

Awaiting further changes / advice ...

Regards
Simon ... :) (I'm a happy chappy !)

Opps !

CORRECTION to "NB ... I can now "allow" changes ! ... so the ResHacker has fixed problem {with SpyBot} I assume !(?)" ...

Simon
Yes, it did :)

However, there are still some items reappearing on your HijackThis log which didn't get fixed.

Let's just temporarily disable teatimer, so that you can fix them for good. Then, remember to re-enable teatimer once we are finished here.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

After the reboot, please do a *scan only* with HijackThis and checkmark these entries, then press the *fix checked* button:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about blank

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Hot_Tarts_Au] C:\Program Files\Video1\Dialers\Hot_Tarts_Au\Hot_Tarts_Au.exe /dontdial

Reboot once more please. Then scan again and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi :)

I have done as requested but I seem to have a problem !

... Every thing seems to go as you recomend but as you can see from the 2 HiJack Logs I have posted (abreviated to save space) it's not "happening" (?)

...The first log is after reboot and looks "good"

... The second log is after I enable "TeaTimer" and my changes are denied so it reverts back to original situation

... and I get 3 change denied alerts showing up on screen ...They say "change denied due to being on my "blacK" list "(?)

... Also at different stages I get a warning from SpyBlaster saying a change to IE home page and to either accept or rejact change ... It dosen't seem to matter what I slect as imediately get another one asking the opposite (hope you can understand that bit !) and/or if I just close the window ...

... I have also included the log showing on the Resident Page which seems to show denial of my changes and may be of help to you ...

So as you can probably guess ... I'm now confused ! ...

(and I hope I haven't confused you ! ...

Regards

Simon

PS ,,I didn't know all this was going to be such an interesting and "exciting" (?) challenge ! ... Your'e doing a MIGHTY job ! ... I'm impressed ! :bigthumb:

Ok, I think I finally see it now. Looks like SpywareBlaster is also interfering.

Please open SpywareBlaster and click on the *tools*

Write down and let me know what see under these two sections:
Tools:
Browser pages
Misc IE Settings

Further, I found you also have Spyware Guard and that may also be blocking things.

Let me give you how to disable those two and in addition disable teatimer and then try to run the fixes in HijackThis that I listed for you. Reboot your PC and if you get any prompts to choose *allow*.

Then, Re-enable your protections in all three programs (spybot, spywareblaster and spywareguard)

Here's the instructions to disable SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard:

Spybot TeaTimer
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

SpywareGuard
Disable SpywareGuard:

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.

SpywareBlaster

On the main screen, just choose "Disable all protection"

Then try to do the fixes with HijackThis.

Reboot.

Scan again with HijackThis and post a fresh log.

(Turn back ON all your protections disabled above)

Hi :)

Where to start ! ...ummmn ...At the beginning I guess ...

RE : You reply :
Please open SpywareBlaster and click on the *tools*

Write down and let me know what see under these two sections:
Tools:
Browser pages
Misc IE Settings

On the Browsers Page :
Internet Explorer (in the display box) were these entries :

1. about blank
2. C:\WINNT\System32\blank.htm
3. about blank
4. %SystemRoot%system32\blank.htm
5. http.//ie.search.msn.com/(SUB_RFC1766)/srchasst/srchasst.htm
6. http.//ie.search.msn.com/(SUB_RFC1766)/srchasst/srchasst.htm

Their were no entries in Mozilla Firefox

On the Misc IE Settings Page

In the display box for text displayed after web page name i IE Title Bar :

Microsoft Internet Explorer

(I noticed a tick box to disable IE Home Page setting in the tools control panel... If it helps ... It's not important for me to have a home page as I used to use about blank in any case ... Also I only use IE for a couple of sites that will only work using IE ... so should I disable ?)

Re Your reply :
Further, I found you also have Spyware Guard and that may also be blocking things.

Then, Re-enable your protections in all three programs (spybot, spywareblaster and spywareguard)

Here's the instructions to disable SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard: ... etc

That's when the "fun" started ! ... (I'll try to be brief !)

I followed above instructions and I kept getting the same problem as before (I tried a few times) ... changes kept getting denied becuase of my "black" list !

So, I did a little exploring ! ... and found that if I clicked on the SB S&D task bar icon (which aren't in the Settings Tab in SBot itself (?)) ... I could click on a choice "settings" and it would bring up my Black and White List ... (see below)

Black & White List
(from SB S&D taskbar icon)

right click / settings / blocked registry changes

These were the entries:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page=about:blank
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\First Home Page=http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?Prd=ie&Pver=5.0&Ar=ie5update&O1=b1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Hot_Tarts_Au=C:\Program Files\Video1\Dialers\Hot_Tarts_Au\Hot_Tarts_Au.exe /dontdial
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default_Page_URL=about blank

The entries above were the only ones in all the four groups ...which just happen to be the "offending" ones ... So I looked them up in Regedit and they were all there ... but SBot would not let me delete them ... So I tracked down the folder in SBot and found the following file : SB S&D \ In Folder : Excludes \ File : RegKeyBlack

So ... Just to see what happened, I sent the file (RegKeyBlack) to my Recycle Bin (where it still is) ... and re-did as per your instructions ... Voila ! ...It worked !(I hope you agree ?) ... So below is my latest HL T Log showing that the "offending" items are no longer there (I hope ?) ...

So, assuming things are OK ... can I delete RegKeyBlack from my Recycle bin ? ... and do I / can I "create" another file to replace deleted one in the Excludes Folder ? ... Also just wondering if there is any way to add/remove items in the "Black and White lists ? ... as there does not appear to be any mention about iit in SBot HELP ?

Below is latest HJ T Log ... with all things enable in all programs .
( I hope I haven't over-stepped the mark by taking things into my own hands ... I was only trying to save you some time ! (although I guess that's what they all say ! ... :) )

Opps, Sorry I forgot one thing!

When I enabled SpyBlaster it came up with a change to either accept or deny ... As I was unsure of what to do ... I chose to deny it ... Below is from SBot Resident showing the denied change ...

06/02/06 20:48:02 Denied value "{4A368E80-174F-4872-96B5-0B27DDD11DB2}" (new data: "") added in Browser Helper Object!

Should I have "allowed" it ? ...

Cheers
Simon :)

You could have allowed this: 4A368E80-174F-4872-96B5-0B27DDD11DB2
That is your SpywareGuard download protection.

Everything else looks ok Simon. Yes, it was ok to delete the file you found (that's one way of doing it anyway ;) )

Just remember to go into each program and re-enable the protection settings you had. If you are unsure, check the "Help" section for the instructions on what those settings do.

After changing your settings back to protect, reboot your computer and if you get any popups to allow or deny, choose *allow* because the changes you just made were OK and that is what those popups are asking. It is seeing the changes we just made when you reboot.

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

So is everything there now running smoothly? If so, I think you are good to go :bigthumb:
