Hello Again,

Your complaint is about a lot of pop ups and the trojan that causes that is Vundo, the thieves that have written it have written it to evade a HJT scan and by renaming it if Vundo is present it will then show up on your log....and it did not .

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.

Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer
Reboot your computer for it to take effect

I see only one questionable entry in your log, this is what I would like you to do.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Go to this site Jotti Upload (http://virusscan.jotti.org/) and under the browse feature, browse to this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\walg.exe

Then click on Submit and it will give you a report , post the report in your next reply.

Open Hijackthis to Scan Only, close all open windows including this one , place a checkmark in the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Please download SuperAntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE)
Install the program

Run SuperAntiSpyware and click: Check for updates
Once the update is finished, on the main screen, click: Scan your computer
Check: Perform Complete Scan
Click Next to start the scan.

Superantispyware scans the computer, and when finished, lists all the infections found.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it, and press: Next
Then, click Finish

It is possible that the program asks to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
Click: Preferences
Click the Statistics/Logs tab
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log
It opens in your default text editor (such as Notepad)

Please provide the SuperAntiSpyware log in your reply, as well as a new HijackThis log.

Let me see the Jotti report, the SAS report and a new HJT log please.

I am currently running the super anti-spyware now. The part that you said I will have to reverse later, do I have to do that before I reboot if this program forces me to reboot? You said it is possible that it may tell me to reboot so do I fix those checked boxes first?

That file still bothers me but I don't want to delete it. You can leave windows enabled to show all files and folders until we are done.

Are you still getting pop ups and what are they referring to?? Let me know before we move on.

Pop ups are just as bad and they come from a variety of sites like mortgage brokers, gambling, adult friend finder is a bad one that keeps coming a lot. I have added them to my restricted sites in windows and that does no good. No pop up blocker works on any of them. It didn't seem like the super anti spyware got anything b/c i have used so many different kinds of tools to try and beat this thing and have already removed much of it just not these pesky ads.

You may have Rootkit that is hiding, run this scan also .

http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

Then run this one.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

I removed 66 bad items from that scanner. Should I do it again or what? Please help me. I hate my computer now and the pop ups are DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!!!!!!

tdm546s
2007-12-06, 06:18
it was in C drive program files grisoft AVG and that was where i saved it and it is gone....do i have to be in safe mode to see it or something?

ken545
2007-12-06, 10:45
If you open up AVG and on the main page you will see a tab for reports, open it , it should be in there.

At this point I am sure you have a Rootkit type of infection, this thing loads before windows and goes undected.

Right now I would like you to run Combofix as it has rootkit detection in the scan and post that report.

tdm546s
2007-12-06, 21:55
I'm not sure where it went but I will start on the new things you are telling me to do. I also started that Kaspersky Scanner and came back to the computer and the window was closed and no report for that either. This virus takes control of windows and closes them randomly also.

Still no sign of whats causing the pop ups.

Open Notepad and copy all the text inside the quote box by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above Filelook::

Filelook::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\walg.exe

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Please download F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) (ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe) and save to your C:\ drive. Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\fsbl.exe /expert
Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
Click "Scan".
After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet!
I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe" and "tcptest.exe.
Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Post both reports please

Is that the one that looks like a fox with a line through it?

C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan). I need to see this report

C:\WINDOWS\system32\walg.exe <-- Go to this file and right click on it and go to Properties and post any info about that file.

and if i go to properties it just says all the created dates, modified and so on....i am very confused. i am running the black light one now and i got a dos error so i am scanning and i see a memo generated on my desk top...it hasn't gotten done scanning yet. I am normally not this computer dumb but i have been hitting this for a week now and am at my ends of tolerance.

Ok, all the scans are showing nothing, Blacklight and Combo will show hidden rootkit type files and Blacklight and Combofix showed none.

I think this may be the problem, lets not delete the file just yet but I want you to disable the service from running.

Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
Scroll down to wlg
Double Click that service to open it.
Click on Stop Service.
Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
OK your way out of the program.

Reboot your computer and let me know if your still getting pop ups.

Hang in, I know this stuff is frustrating.

but disabled worked and upon reboot i didn't get the firewall error i have been getting each time...It says firewall is turned off and then when I click on it, it says it is ON. That didn't happen this time. I did, however get two application errors that i had never seen before. They said invalid hook handle. Not sure what that meant but I don't care if this gets rid of pop ups. So far as I am typing this, I have gotten ZERO!!!! Usually by now, i would have gotten about 3 or 4 since boot up. Could it be? Is this the solution we have been waiting for? Only time will tell.

My friend, if you were in MO right now, I'd take you out to dinner and let you order whatever you wanted. I'm telling you what this has been pure HELL. I believe we are now at the root of the problem. I am all ears as to what to do next. Should we go back and delete that sucker? Also, let me know when to change back those checked boxes for operating files and stuff.

If it causes you issues, just rename it back to walg.exe

Let me know how things are running now??

i still got the bubble that pops up and says your firewall may be at risk but immediately i get an update that fixes it and when I click on the bubble, it says my firewall is ON and everything is normal. This never happened until I got this Trojan. The Application errors stopped this time though.

Would you also let me know which of these anti-spyware programs i should keep and which i can uninstall and get rid of? I really don't want all of them.

What you can do is to go to Start> Control Panel> Security Center and on the left you will see an option for Change the way Security Center alerts me and take the checkmark out of Firewall.

It looks like you have Anti Virus software from Yahoo which is fine, you also have Spyware Doctor and AVG Anti Spyware, there fine also.

Here is a link to free tools and some tips to help keep you more secure.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 2.0.0.6 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp) Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

Glad we could help, any more issues please post back.

should i download that zone alarm even though i already have a firewall built into SP2? Don't want to over kill like you said. I feel like i have a ton of anti virus stuff now and that i should get rid of some. Like should i delete that combofix now? It isn't listed in my add/remove programs list. Wasn't sure how to go about deleting it other than just dragging it to the recycle bin.

ken545

XPs firewall just blocks incoming threats and ZoneAlarm blocks them coming and going. If you install ZoneAlarm , during the installation it will turn off the Windows Firewall.

Go to Start > Run and copy and paste ComboFix /u into the box
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Hope this helps

We work with people from all over the world, some with language differences, some that are very computer savvy and some that are not. All the instructions are written so that generally most people can follow them. Some do and some others need a little extra help which we are always happy to provide. You did very well :bigthumb: I will bet my last dollar that you have learned quite a bit from this experience.

Any more questions or issues by all means please post back, thats why were here.

Sometimes when I try to switch users over to my wife's windows user account, the screen freezes on the wallpaper and the mouse can move but all of the windows are gone. I can let it sit for hours this way and nothing. The screen saver won't kick on and it won't default out to the blue screen that lists all of the users like usual. This was something that happened before the trojan and after we fixed everything. Could this be a sign of a more serious problem or is it possible that the CPU is just over-heating or something?

Not sure whats causing it. I have never been a big fan of different user accounts. I know that before you switch to a different account its best to log of the current one before switching.

Here are some windows support sites that you can post to. We just do malware removal in this one. These windows guys can offer more assistance in this area.

now just out of the blue my LCD monitor just randomly turned black and will not come back on. I know that probably isn't your area either but do you have any ideas on where i could go online to find a trusted forum that would help best. You all have been great on here so I figured I'd ask you for your trusted partners in monitor trouble shooting before I just go posting on some random forum.

ken545

What I would do is to switch out the monitor for known good one, even if you have to borrow a neighbors for 10 min. just to make sure its the monitor. If the new monitor works than your older monitor is bad, if the new monitor does not work than it could be either your Video card or even the drivers may be corrupt.

You can post in one of these forums as they deal with issues like this on a regular basis.

so i switched them and now i am stuck using this old clunker until i can get my LCD fixed. I am also trying to uninstall a lot of the anti-spyware programs you had me download b/c it takes up so much space. I got the AVG one uninstalled. I now have a Norton Firewall but I want to uninstall the Super Anti-Spyware one and when I try to in add and remove programs, it uninstalls it then won't delete the icon off of the desktop and when I re-boot the program is back. I don't like that one. What are some other ways of uninstalling the programs besides going to the add/remove programs in windows xp?

Hey,

Never had a problem uninstalling SAS before, you can try this, stop the service if its still running.

Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
Scroll down to Super Anti-Spyware
Double Click that service to open it.
Click on Stop Service.
Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
OK your way out of the program.

Now try uninstalling it, you can drag the Icon to the trash if its still present.

ComboFix /u <-- Highlight this with your mouse and right click and select Copy
* Go to start > run and paste it in the field:
Then hit enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

You drag Blacklight to the trash.

Hope this helps,
Ken
