Hi
Fixing a laptop for a neighbor with nephews visiting all the wrong sites. She did not have any anti-virus or anti-spyware and got the computer so full of Trojans, and others that it took me hours just to install norton and spybot and get the updates while barely staying ahead in closing the strobelighting webpages offering virus and spyware protection of all things!
Was able to clean most of it up with Norton and Spybot, except for Smitfraud. Used forum suggestions on my own (probably shouldn't have..), ran combofix, smithguardfix, AVG Scanner, which got rid of Smithguard, but then Virtumonde appeared, was detected and cleaned by Spybot, but would just reappear. Could you help me with this, before I tell her to just wipe the computer clean and start over?
As per "before you post", ran Kaspersky scan, spybotted in safe mode, only virtumonde appeared, cleaned, rebooted, then ran HJT in normal mode. Thank you very much in advance.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Let's clear the air first, this either is or was a Vundo infection and I also see PurityScan/OIN. I do not know about any other infections as I have seen none of the reports the tools that you used generated. Let me give you this information.
You have a Vundo infection which can be very hard to remove. This will take some time and unless you are patient, understand how to follow directions and are comfortable working on your computer, you may want to seek local professional help. If you wish to proceed, read and follow the directions carefully.

Now if you can work with those instructions, I will do all I can to help. If you can not, let me know.

1) See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< your Java version is BADLY out of date and likely the reason for the infection. Install the newest version and uninstall all olds version in Add Remove program.

2) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< clean out the Spybot S&D Recovery folder
http://ict.cas.psu.edu/training/howto/util/removespybot.htm#1

3) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine\ <<< delete all files in that quarantine folder

4) System Restore in infected, DO NOT use System Restore until we clean it later.

5) This junk can download more, stay offline except when troubleshooting until we get the computer clean.

6) If you have any of the tools I am about to use, delete them and download them new from the links I provide.

7) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial

"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot. Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

(wait until you finish to post reports and logs)

8) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the Vundofix.txt, combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

plettinsky

Thank you pskelley for your help.
Followed instructions to empty recovery of SBS&D, and quarantine of NAV. Also emptied the backups of NAV which was full of vundos and other things.
Ran vundofix, but it couldn't find anything to remove!
ran combofix, allow spybot one registry deletion message, then HJT. Here are the logs:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback.

Ran vundofix, but it couldn't find anything to remove! Please post the report anyway, information there I wish to view...Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) TeaTimer will block changes we must make, use these instruction to turn it off until we are done.
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

4) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS~1\KRISTI~1\LOCALSETTINGS~1\Temp\aprkqkkh.dll <<< delete the contents of that Temp folder, that's a bad file

C:\Documents and Settings\Kristie Addington\My Documents\T?sks\ <<< delete that folder and contents

7) Run ATF Cleaner

Hello pskelley. neverending thanks

YOU SAID:
Please post the report anyway, information there I wish to view...Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\..........

here's the vundofix log (did it twice to be sure and even hit remove, even though it hadn't found anything).

VundoFix V6.7.0

Old versions of java are exploitable and should be removed.

I did update the java, but I didn't install some of the extras is that what it's referring to?

Sorry, I hope I'm not making things more difficult, but there were some complications (see below)
I couldn't find the file in the temp folder you wanted me to delete. I deleted everything in the folder anyway.
I couldn't find the folder T?sks.
NAV had found these files
ddccy.dll
wyejpypn.dll.vir
mrofinu572.exe.vir
and deleted them before I started working on your instructions...don't know if that had anything to do with it?

And finally, the new HJT log:

Not to worry:santa: I have been at it for 16 hours. Your HJT log looks fine:bigthumb: How is the computer running. Please make sure to delete combofix, the c:\qoobox\quarantine\ folder, Vundofix and the C:\VundofixBackups\ folder. Then restart your computer and run a new Kaspersky scan using these settings:

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

The computer is running great. and KAV came up clean (log below)...

Not sure how bad this is but I had some unexpected things again.

Complication 1: When I tried to delete the qoobox\quarantine folder, everything deleted except a folder called C in it that would not delete. It had subfolders called Documents and Settings, Program Files, Temp and WINDOWS, and they have files with .vir extensions in them. Is this a problem ?

Complication 2: As I was running KAV scan, Norton autoprotect kicked in and acted on 134 Trojan.vundo, 2 dowloader, and 2 Trojan.Duntek risks. looking at risk histories in Norton, they seemed to be in the restore folder? Is this something I need to clean up, both the restore and the norton risk histories?

Thanks again. My neighbor is anxious to get her computer back, although understandably patient to get it back clean...Here is the KAV log:

The computer is running great. and KAV came up clean:bigthumb:
Thanks for the feedback.

Complication 1:
Before I ask sUBs about this, see this information:
http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/vir

It sounds like Symantec removed infected files and now combofix/or Symantec has moved them to the C:\ folder. Can you tell me if this was the qoobox\quarantine folder? or does it have another name, hard to believe it is just C
Since they are renamed they can do you no harm. Provide as much information as you can about this.

Complication 2:
I need to see what Symantec is flagging. Can you copy/paste that report to your topic?

I am seeing no System Restore items that are infected in the scan, so I am not sure what Symantec is seeing? Could it be seeing what is in that C folder?

I was ready to send the computer home with a clean Kaspersky, but we better resolve these issues first.

Thanks...Phil

Hello again.

I'm ready to send this computer home as well, but thanks for helping me make sure, she won't just bring it back

OK here's the Symantec log. It exports it as a .csv, which I took from excel into notepad. The first bunch of lines are the column headings. If you can spread it out on a landscape sheet it may be readable.

Symantec caught more vundos in the APTemp folder of Symantec, a file called APQ422C, with reboot required to fix it. The computer just restarted during the scan (laptop overheated?) and after the restart I rescanned with Symantec and it came up clean. I also rescanned with Spybot and AVG, and they came up clean as well (except for a HitBox cookie).

About the files under the qoobox\quarantine, I typed the files and folders out, then thought about trying to delete them again, and lo and behold the deleted just fine. In case you're interested, the stuff's below. The lines were tabbed so each line is a folder with subfolders and files

Thanks again

Not being a Symantec user, I am not familiar with their log, but here is what I see:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{D5341F9C-33F7-43CF-8BD2-1AE937C9BA1B
These are infected System Restore files and no matter what Symantec says it did, they are protected files. This is the only way you can clean those:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

C:\qoobox\Quarantine\ <<< this is the folder used by combofix to quarantine infected files removed by the tool and store files in the event sUBs needs to have them moved to him for some reason. This folder should be deleted completely as well as combofix. The program does not update and must be downloaded new if ever needed again.

Since you read this same information I read: http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/vir
If you have not deleted those, I would do so.

A quick look back over this topic tends to make me think the ower does not realize how serious things are now on the internet, see this:

As a second thought I also suggest, time permitting, a free diagnostic here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/
Might shed some light on other issues.

Cleaned the restore
cleaned the combofix quarantine
ran a pcpitstop, which said most things are OK, could use more memory (couldn't we all)
what was I saying?

Seriously though, thank you so much. As far as educating the owner, I think being without her laptop for two weeks and seeing her nephews infect her sisters and mothers computers (I may be back on the forum..., or may simpy suggest a disk wipe) she's convinced and will maintain the software I put on her computer, BUT I will keep a copy of the thread on her desktop if ever she needs a reminder, particularly your last message. And I will also encourage her to send a donation to SpyBot.

Hope your helping advice leads on a journey of ever more joy in the killing of these nasties...
