hi rjones,

scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

check the C:\WINDOWS dir and make sure those 04 items above are gone, hjt can delete some 04 items so you may not find them--delete just the .exe if you have problem deleting them try booting into safe mode to do it after copying the list to notrepad and saving it somewhere so you can read it. you reach safe mode by tapping the f8 key during a restart. chose first option: safe mode. once in safe mode find and delete them
--------------------------------------
look here>C:\Program Files\ and delete entire winupdates folder.
i dont see a antivirus application in the log
pick one or two of these and do a online scan:

BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
check AutoClean under Scan Options.

Panda ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan?NRMODE=Published&NRORIGINALURL=%2factivescan&NRNODEGUID=%7b3B202047-35D4-4DA2-B310-B1DBEC2971F2%7d&NRCACHEHINT=Guest

Kaspersky virus scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Housecall at TrendMicro
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
check Auto Clean.

F-Secure virus scanner
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner

-----------------------------------
do you need antivirus software?
after the upabove, reboot once and post a new hjt log..........

i did two of the online scans, but have yet to download a permanent antivirus program. everything seems to be working the way it's supposed to, so if those two fake files have to stick around i guess it's not the end of the world. and i got rid of the winupdate folder, too

thanks for all your help so far

hi rjones,

is it spybot thats flagging those two files?
can you find them in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 dir? dont delete them just yet.

heres a link to a free for home users antivirus:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

yes, it is spybot that finds those two files. when i look in the directory, though, i can only find netstat -- the other doesn't seem to exist at all, even after unchecking the hidden system files box. i've downloaded that antivirus program, as well. it found some problems and fixed them, but they were unrelated to those 'fake' files.

thanks again
ryan
