View Full Version : System freezes running 1.5.1.15

I have been running Spybot successfully for several years with no problems. I had been running the previous version of Spybot, and after a recent file update, my computer would freeze solid during the middle of a scan, and always at the same spot. I uninstalled it, downloaded and installed version 1.5.1.15, but still have the same problem. I next tried the new beta version, but still the same problem.

The scan gets to the point of looking for Vario.AntiVirus, and then the system locks up solid - I can't move the mouse cursor, can't bring up Task Manager, nothing. The only thing I can do then is reboot the system by powering off/on. By the way, I am running a Windows XP system, Athlon 64 processor, 1Gb memory.

I have looked at the common response to this type of problem, and I've tried following all of the suggestions, deleting the suggested files, etc. etc. All to no avail.

Given all of the reports related to the latest Spybot freezing and locking up systems that otherwise run witt no problems, it seems there is a problem with Spybot. Is there any fix or workaround available for this issue?

I've never seen it freeze in the middle of a scan, but mine lags terribly usually at the same spot, I think it's the same spot you described too. But it starts to move after ten minutes or so. The scans always take 45 - 50 minutes total. Even when Spybot runs at Startup before other programs aren't supposed to be in the backround, it'll take 45 minutes.

And always, well, almost always (9 times out of 10) when I close Spybot it'll bring up the Task Manager saying "the program is not responding, End Task"? The only time I've had the whole machine freeze was when I kept trying to "End Task" and force SB to exit.

From what I've read on these forums, some people have had better results when they switch back to v1.4 of SB S&D. I'm also running WinXP (HE SP2) Intel Celeron 2.67Ghz, 248MB RAM.

Tried the latest beta version, still have the same problem. This is very frustrating as I have been a big proponent of Spybot for some time, and now it seems to have become unusable .

Hello,

Please try the following:
Please run Spybot - Search & Destroy in "Advanced Mode" and go to "Settings" -> "Ignore products".
There tick the checkbox in front VarioAntivirus.
Please try if the scan works now.

I did as suggested, and checked off to ignore Vario.AntiVirus (all 4 entries), and ran Spybot again. It got quite a bit further this time before locking up my system - it died on "84059/106700 Search2Find".

For the heck of it, I restarted my system, went into Spybot and told it to ignore the Vario.AntiVirus entries as well as the Search2Find entries (2 of them). Ran Spybot again, and this time it locked up my system at "66412/106700 GainGator". It doesn't look like ignoring certain products is going to fix the problem.

Hello,

Please run a scan in safe mode:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm
That should fix it.

Booted into Safe Mode, ran Spybot without ignoring any products. This time my system froze up at "84141/106700 Smitfraud-C".

My wife's XP pc had this same problem. I opened msconfig and set it to restart only basic services. then rebooted, ran SpyBot. This time SpyBot completed the scan, and found nothing but did report a conflict with Vario.Antivirus.

Then I ran AdAware, it di not find anything. Then I ran AVG AntiVirus full scan and it found nothing. So, I am not sure if SpyBot got it cleaned or not. Tonight I am going to scan with SpyBot again with all services activated.

Hello,

Please delete the contents of your Windows temp folder.

You can also try the following:
- select "Settings" --> "Settings" in the navigation bar on the left and untick the checkbox in front of "display confirmation dialogs"
- exit Spybot-S&D so the settings are saved
- run Spybot-S&D and "Check for problems" again

Expect it to run slowly, it appears to hang. Please be patient - it should clear with the problems fixed.

If it still doesn't work please select "Settings" --> "Settings" from the toolbar on the left. In the section "Main settings" please untick the checkbox in front of "Create system restore point when fixing spyware/usage tracks".

Best regards

Hi spybotsandra,

Just to let you know, the same happens when I scan (when my computer is idle). Spybot seems to hang around Vario. But after a couple of minutes it just carries on scanning as normal. Anyway it is not much of a problem for me as im usually eating (something or somewhere!) and do notice anything.

Just thought I should let you know

Thank you for continuing to try to help resolve the issue I am having with Spybot.

I did as suggested:

1. Delete the contents of your Windows temp folder - system froze up at 47340/109296: Vario.AntiVirus

2. Untick checkbox in front of Display Confirmation Dialogs - system froze up at 38813/109296: Smitfraud-C

3. Untick checkbox in front of Create System Restore Point When Fixing Spyware/Usage Tracks - this checkbox was already unchecked.

All in all, Spybot still will not work for me

I am experiencing the very same exact problem, I must have gotten a couple of viruses on my computer (long story) which never happens with my provider but anyway I am a rookie too but can't get thru the scan no matter what I do. I have thought about the following but wonder if they have anything to do with this or not.
First a while ago I found a bloodhound virus, got it quarenteened but it could never be fixed. Isn't bloodhound an old, old virus and could it have been updated somehow. THEN I use web shots, look at all the photos there and used their screen saver download function. Found a couple more viruses (maybe) but they have been quarentined. Every time I scan my whole computer freezes up OR reboots itself, finally during one freeze, I had to shut down my computer and I am wondering if I lost some of my windows data because I got an error saying some windows files had been changed and that I must restore the original versions of these files, so I just re booted (again) for the thousanth time. But you must be on to something because each of your annotations is familiar to me while I try to discover a problem. I haven't tried safe mode thing yet, but when you said yours froz up at 84141/106700 Smitfoud-c what ever it was, my froze up there once too. Does your wife happen to sue Webshots? I only ask because I did and although we have deleted everything, the problem still exists, I got one error saying TeaTimer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You'll need to restart the program -error log created.

I was able to download another virus scanner but it didn't find any viruses, while I've had this problem I may or may not have found a virus or two, I can't tell since I can't get thru the entire scan. Anyone else having this problem? Might be helpful to know. I'm wondering if there could be a virus out that affected my windows OR if by freezing it up so many times, and rebooting if I've lost data due to that.

I really am a rookie, my kid is the one to help when he comes, but in the meantime, I'm trying to figure something out.

Also got one error after the millionth error saying that the CD-Rom drive in my system is not function. So I rebooted again, not sure if this are bogus or if I'm losing data.

Also remember something about the varioantivirus thing too but I don't know what or why.

Anyone else finding such weird stuff?

Please advise me.

I am the rookie, but I have been trying to work on a work around, I don't even know what that is but I have heard the term before. I thought I had a virus or two but now I have come to the conclusion (right or wrong) that the virus is related to Spybot Search&Destroy. I find too that it is rendered useless. However, I'm not programmer but I am working on what I might term as a work around. I'm not sure because I don't consider myself a programmer, just a secretary type.

Anyway, I am getting close to something (I think) but then how do I get rid of the virus -- if I get my spy bot to run through the entire program. I got so close to the end. I now need a break so I'm going to forget it for this evening. I can type up some notes and give them to whom ever wants to pursue this further. I invite Spybot to contact me and ask me for what I have discovered --- if anything, I think I am on to something because I almost got clear to the end of the program this time before it bebooted, it seems to find what files I thought I hid (sort of) in order to work the work around. I aslo printed out the files listed, but you won't see them at all if you run your program until you press immunize during the scanning process. This way I was able to continue several times, getting me closer and closer, but the virus seems to find my work around too. It seems to be changing my windows program so that it is most difficult to open my email but I have to have it OPEN as well as another userid for MSN going in order to be able to access both the Spybot now and run it (using Run) then _ I have to try up to 50 times to get my spybot to open (it doesn't even wanat to open now - and I do two tings to get it to open and keep repeating about 50times and finally it will open) too but it will finally open. I was able to print something not sure what it means if anything and I can tell you the errors that show up listing 3 but you don't see the files until later if you are able to continue the scan. Then it still comes back and reboots even thought I'm so close to the end of running the scan. Thanks for listening.

Ricke if you want to know what I may or may not know at this point as a rookie and perhaps you can help me, help you
please don't hesitate to contact me.

Spybot -- can you confirm that I am on to something surely Rick and I are not the only two people with this problem with your softwre, it would be ashamed to NOT be able to stop this Brute or Bute that is doing this against you.

I must say that my figuring out some of this is purely due to persistence.

Thanks

Hello Lindy.

I see that you have mentioned viruses/infections several times.

Spybot - Search & Destroy is not designed to find and remove viruses or worms.
Spybot-S&D searches for spyware, malware, adware, trojans, hijackers and keyloggers.

honda12 gave you the link to our malware removal forum, if you start a topic there someone can analyse a log and advise you.

Please follow the procedure in this link:
"BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Then start your own thread in the Malware Removal Forum (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22)

You can skip the Spybot scan in the instructions for the moment and just produce the HJT log.

Best regards.

I have the same problem except my system just shuts down halfway through the scan. Tied the beta update which improved load time but still crashes slightly further into the scan. When the system shuts down it takes 4/5 restarts to get it running again. I have un installed SB which is a pity because it WAS a good tool before the update.
For sure the beta upgrade that Sandra keeps pushing does not fix the problem. Back to the drawing board!!

Hello,

Please try the following:
Please run Spybot - Search & Destroy in "Advanced Mode" and go to "Settings" -> "Ignore products".
There tick the checkbox in front of MalwareC.sbi and Malware.sbi .

Hi Lindy, I noticed that you are worried about losing data and you may have gotten some corruption due to all the hard locks your system went through. You can fix these usually by running a chkdsk.

Go to "Start"->"Run..." and in the dialog box that comes up, type in "cmd" and press the "Enter" key. When the black screen comes up, type in: "chkdsk /f". The computer will tell you that the program cannot be run because the volume is in use by another process and would you like to run on system restart? Type in "Y" and hit enter, then restart your computer.
If you have any data corruption, it should be recoverable. Good luck with Spybot.

I had the same problem sybot stopped on vario antivirus. I ran a disc cleaner utility which activated antivir when it tried to delete files in c:\documents and setting\(username)\local settings\Temp (antivir did not pick this up on a normal scan) antivir identified a file in the directory as a trojan. I think it is called AAA as I am getting error logs with 0x414141.

I then used a console to try to clear out the temp file which crashed . I then booted up in safe mode and the same happened. Even just a directory listing will crash the console.

I have now renamed the temp folder and created a new one. Spybot now runs OK. and found 3 other problems :-)

I have no idea how to remove the file but I am assuming so long as it is not accessed all will be fine. I was thinking about removing the disc and attaching to 2nd comp.

I also had to remove and reload Java but this may not be related to this trojan.

Good luck.
