View Full Version : Another Zlob.DNSChanger Problem

Raiders

Hello There,

My name is Raiders and this is my first posting. I have been a user of SpyBot S&D for some time now. I truly appreciate its value. I was must have been delinquent for a short time in down loading the updates and now my system has been infected. Here is my summary.

1) Ran virus scan using McAfee ---> found no infections

2) Spybot S&D in normal and safe mode always detects Zlob.DNSChanger even after seemingly removing it.

3) I read a thread from June 2007 entitled “Zlob.DNSChanger” posted by “Craeat” … so to save time, I downloaded and ran Fixwareout.exe as you asked Craeat to do. I realize now after having read “Before You Post”, I should have waited to let you see my HJT log first. "No two problems are exactly alike". Sorry.

4) Having said that, here are the three logs:
(i) Fixwareout report,
(ii) HJT report (after doing Fixewareout.exe) … and finally
(iii) Kaspersky scan report (just the introductory summary, else post would be too long).

Note that I had to dbl click “dnsbak.reg” registry file in the Fixwareout folder to get Internet Explorer to work after the Fixwareout re-boot. It suggested I mention that to you.

Can you help me? Any help would be truly appreciated.

With sincere thanks,
Raiders

Hello ‘pskelley’ and thank you for your response and help.

To answer your questions:
(1) I have read and understood “Before You Post”.
(2) The information about “dnsbak.reg” was given to me in a dialogue box by Fixwareout itself upon the re-boot. It was the last and only message given prior to completion of re-boot and Windows loading.
(3) My computer seems to be running well. Sites that were giving me error messages the other day (e.g. classified listings in reputable newspapers like “The Toronto Star” or “The Hamilton Spectator”) now work.

Posted below:
(1) New HJT v. 2.0.2 log after I did the HJT fixes and the ran AFT Cleaner.
(2) The Kaspersky Report Below is from yesterday (can fit in this posting?) before following your instructions.

Questions of mine:
(1) Out of interest, What should I do (if anything) with the knowledge of who the hackers are (85.255.116.126)?
(2) Also, please instruct me based on your analysis of the Kaspersky report.

Thanks so much for all your help. I am grateful beyond measure. All the best.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, you asked:

Out of interest, What should I do (if anything) with the knowledge of who the hackers are (85.255.116.126)?Not much you can do, they are about immune from law at this point, see this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Business_Network

Kaspersky:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< delete the contents of that Recovery Folder
http://ict.cas.psu.edu/training/howto/util/removespybot.htm#1

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\kdsml.ren Infected: Trojan.Win32.DNSChanger.abk skipped
This one was renamed by Fixwareout, delete the contents of that TEMP folder making sure that file goes.

Happy Holidays:santa:

Hello ‘PSKELLEY’

I followed your instructions and removed the infected items. Then:

(1) I ran a Spybot Scan with the new version 1.5. All clean.
(2) I ran a Kaspersky scan. All clean.

I am in your debt. Thank you. Thank you.

Also, I read through many of the links you sent me giving fantastic tips. I will follow many of them. In fact, I've already started following a few.

Please ... please ... do have yourself a wonderful and happy holiday season. The good will you and your colleagues show to others is worth emulating. Best wished to you and yours.

With sincerity,
Raiders

P.S. - - - (sorry ... I forgot ... one last question, then you can close thread?) Kaspersky seems like a very good (deep scan) virus scanner. My scans using McAfee came back "clean", while Kaspersky found a couple of files and objects. Why is that ... and ... do you recommend buying Kaspersky? I know it is available free for scanning, but I assume it can clean what if finds also? Finally, is there value in McAfee?

I personally suggest only freeware products, but I will say you can Google for information. Here is just one site that rate performance:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,130869/article.html

I will also say you can have the best antivirus program money can buy, but if you don't keep the data bases updated, you will get infected. Poor safe surfing habits will negate expensive protection also.

Lots of good information to help you stay safe online:

Hope that helps...
